Royal 5000 hand vacuum and Hoover Pixie
[Down to Last]

Hello All,
Does anyone remember seeing a Hoover Pixie in a retail catalog that had an outer bag that was round (similar to early Regina Electrikbrooms with pleats?

I have a Royal 5000 hand vac that needs a cloth bag with gasket. Do the 501 (even though they're blue in color) shake out bags fit these models, and if so, does anyone know where I can purchase one. Seems like the 501 bags are more pliable than the 5000 bag.

Thanks much in advance.

Yeah, the model 501 bag will fit just fine. For the most part the 5000 and the later 501s are pretty much the same unit from a mechanical stand point. If you want you can also use paper inserts with these vacuums. They are Royal Type H bags. You can get them at places like www.totalvac.com....

Replacement cloth bags were fairly common up until recently. They are hard to find new these days, although its not impossible.

1976 Pixie ad (off-topic from a Handivac thread)

Hi Brian,

Good eye!

I totally missed that, so I went back and captured more of the ad that I had truncated. I wonder if the word was meant to be 'hems' instead of 'lawns' — to correspond with the scissors and pinking shears?

I also looked up an online Pixie manual just to see if there was a blower port for leaves , but found no mention of one.

Don,

Yes, most parts of the 501 will work on this machine, too. The 5000 was a variation of the 501 with the finger guard by the on/off switch on the handle.

The last of the 501s got the finger guard as well. I have a blue one with and one without.

Hi Paul,

The only thing I can think of is that the copywriter meant to say “lawn furniture” - but they should have said “patio furniture”. Which could have been dangerous too, since none of these vacs are meant to be used outdoors or on wet surfaces…

On a related note: Numatic has now introduced a bagged Henry Quick handvac with a hose! The newest version of the Hoover Pixie!!! 😁

Edgar,

It was starting in 1988 or perhaps late in 1987 that the 501 first had the built-in finger guard by the motor switch.

All of the M5000s had this, as did the Dirt Devil 501D Deluxe model sold in some department stores.
