hi,

We had the family vaccs and i liked that very much. Every Collector has some things they should through out but you just can't because of sentimental reasons. So I like to see some ugly cleaners instaed of all the beautys we normaly show. I will start. It is a philips that belonged to an ols neighbour. The lady died and I still keep the cleaner for more than 16 years now.

Even Ugly deserves Love and Appreciation.

Particularly when they are this far over the top Ugly!

There is really no cogent explanation for how something this ungainly was put on the Market.

Haley's Comet runs a close 2nd for bloated loutishness

aeoliandave's profile picture
But I love it dearly. A Gilded Lump of Pig Iron...ok, it's magnesium. Still, a Lump that pulls 85" vacuum!

Here the Comet pulls duty as sluggish Tanker refueling a Sleek Fleet of Constellations...or demonstrating Animal Husbandry. :-)

The Haleys Comet looks like the GM Futurliner I think

A Contemporary take on the classic Compact.

aeoliandave's profile picture
You would think with the Compact lineage as a Design Icon, it's children would exhibit more taste.

Ah well, the Vortech Force - Compact canoodles with The Hulk - is a Brute of a Machine in Mucho Butcho colours and carries that masculine theme to the max in it's resemblance to Winnibago RVs and Freightliners. Not bad for an Italian manufactured (?) vacuum.

The sentimental favorite

aeoliandave's profile picture
The homely, humble and hardworking Advance Papoose - the little vac that could. This guy can literally spin on a dime on those nimble rubber tires. Sure, he's small but oh my, what a Big Hose he has.

Okay...it's time to stop trashing the Sunbeam Challenger

eurekaprince's profile picture
Dave...I agree that the mod disco "wallpaper" on the Sunbeam is hideous, but I actually think the overall design of the machine is beautiful. I never played with one, so I don't know how great a cleaner it is, nor how easy it is to use. But I really think this vac provides a set of some of the best attachments ever given in one package - and the best part is, all of them, including the hose and both wands have storage places ingeniously designed into the main unit. I don't see that fancy, metal-plated upholstery nozzle on your version - must have been only for the TOL unit.

The standing wands on the back were supposed to help you trundle the vac around without bending, and the little "L" shaped wheel stopper was supposed to brake the vac from sliding backwards as you shlepped it up a flight of stairs. This was way ahead of the "stair lock" you see now featured on Kenmore Progressives/Elegances. Also, the top-side position of the cord reel access seems to also be designed for user-friendliness. I even like the high position of the handle.

As I said, "chalooshes" colours ("to faint for..." as we would say in Yiddish....), but the design seems really well thought out. This would be the kind of vac that I would love to see re-done with a powerful motor and good filtre bags. How 'bout all in white?

I really think I am going to have to drive down to Stratford at some point when the weather gets better!!!!!

Takes me back to my childhood

I love the Sunbeam! It takes me back to my childhood! That was quite stylish back in the day.

Against that Sunbeam! It beat my brand-new Hoover 53 in the cleaning contest. My 53 won best original, but should have one the cleaning contest as well!

My collecting tastes aren't eclectic or random - they ar

aeoliandave's profile picture
If you've read the novel WICKED - not the musical :-( - you'll know why the challenging Sunbeam's name is Elphaba. I'm not trashing her but I'll always make fun of her. If yer gonna go out in public dressed in garish clashing shades of bile green yer gonna get pointed at and mocked. I myself spent a 'tweens' year wearing lime & avocado greens including the bell bottoms, sweater vests, puffy jacket and a Sunday Suit before the beatles came along and I wore black for a few years. Dark days indeed in a young man's life.

And thus my repellent attraction to green vacuums of many badges. Someday I'll find my Shrek. LOL

I agree the cord tools hose & wand storage solutions are logically thought out by engineers but among her stylish peers she's the one with the paper bag over her head at the dance.

I do luv her tho - I went to some trouble to track 'er down and bag 'er on Ebay, after all. Never seen a pciture of one with any chrome floor nozzle (?). I do need the matching green dusting brush :-)

Presenting for group derision, the seductively curvy SpringLeaf Green Dirt Devil/Royal ExpressVac. Belt driven brushroll with intelligent central straight shot dirt path bagless portable upright. Does a good job except for motor whine. His name is 'grasshopper' with a lowercase G.

Stratford Dave is right....

eurekaprince's profile picture
...even the people at Sunbeam realized that they dressed the Challenger for derision in those colours. That's why they also came out with a "kewler" version, featuring that ubiquitous Eureka faux-woodgrain finish, and toned down standard beige tools (methinks). Perhaps the green one should have been called the Sunbeam "Wallflower"! :-)

That Dirt Devil Express Vac looks like the end result of taking a really expensive Bosch/Vax/Siemens fancy European upright, ripping out all the extras and dipping it in gaucamole! Mmmmmmm.....I love guacamole.......

No Dance for This Gal

I doubt this poor girl will ever get asked to dance. She's been hanging around the Ebay punch bowl for quite a while! She's quite sturdy but I don't think she'd be very light on her feet.

You Too!

"I myself spent a 'tweens' year wearing lime & avocado greens including the bell bottoms, sweater vests, puffy jacket and a Sunday Suit..."

Dave:

I feel for you, because green is my mother's favourite colour, and she applies it with a heavy, heavy hand. To this day, I shudder when I see avocado appliances, because I well remember how damned green everything got when the colour was so much in fashion and Ma could get her green fix anytime she wanted, which was 24/7/365. She didn't believe children were capable of picking out their own clothes, so she bought green everything for us, and there was nothing for it but to wear her bilious selections. Every. Damn. Day. I mean, there were freaking leprechaun jokes.

It is a rare day when you see me wearing anything green nowadays.

There are no ugly vacuums, only misguided owners that dress them funny.
