I was able to bring a Miele Upright home from the vacuum store today, to play with and run through the house - to better familiarize myself with it.
...Yeah, we'll call it that. :-)

Overall, I am very impressed with it! It really is very different than anything I've ever used - speaking strictly on its maneuverability.
Otherwise, it feels like a Miele. Solid, powerful, well-built, quiet.

It's got a really long cord, the hose stretched nearly all the way up my stairs (I was able to get the top stair with the wand extended), it lays very flat, does a great job on bare floors, the LED headlights are really cool - bright - it's not terribly heavy, heavier than I would have thought, but it operates so easily that the weight really isn't noticeable.

I may have to buy one... *sigh*

Enjoy some pictures!
(Sorry they're kind of grainy)

Clean air. All of the dirt goes up through the wand and hose

Please do a more detailed review if you have time.

Would you purchase this machine (at retail) over other similarly priced upright makes/models? Does the swivel feature provide a REAL benefit, in your opinion? Bag size? Dirt path?

Great pics Fred! Is a bare floor brush also available? Is it as quiet as Miele is known for?

Yay! I got to take home a new Mieleupright!

Fred,
Vary smart looking vacuum. It has interesting wheels. Is it easy to push on the carpet? Seems like I have seen a tree like that somewhere else-I wonder where-haha.
How would you compare it to the Hoover Windtunel on the carpet?

Hey Fred...

Is that Miele a Riccar Radiance/Simplicity Synergy killer? Or not quite?

Post# 57337 , Reply# 9   12/31/2008 at 12:49 (5,592 days old) by kirbysthebest (Midwest)

Am I allowed to ask. . .What's the price point for this machine?
I was just wondering because it was asked if it were a "Riccar Radiance/Simplicity Synergy killer?" I know their price point and was just wondering if the Miele was in that same ballpark?

Purchase Plan

vacfanatic's profile picture
I am going to purchase the S7 Tango or Swing, not sure which color yet, in a couple of weeks. I just sold my S5 Capricorn Canister on ebay for $799. It was only 11 months old, with about 57 hours of use on it. I was sad to let her go, but this new S7 is really nice. I'll post pictures once I get mine.

David-

To answer your questions:

Would you purchase this machine (at retail) over other similarly priced upright makes/models?

No... Personally, I would not pay retail for one of these machines. The model I brought home retails for $899. For that money, I would rather pay for a Miele canister. I've really become attached to my Miele canister - spoiled almost.
And I'm not terribly familiar with other uprights that range between the $700-$900 price points.

Does the swivel feature provide a REAL benefit, in your opinion?

I don't think it provides much of a benefit - other than the fact it's extremely easy to operate and maneuver. If you've every tried one of the Dyson Balls, there's ZERO comparing the ease of use from one to the other. The Miele wins, hands down.

It seems to have a standard 13" cleaning path, and the bag is a true "top fill" -- probably holds about as much as a Hoover "Y" bag.

----

Kyle:

I don't have much experience with the Riccar/Simplicity. So I really can't say for certain. The vac store I work at IS a Riccar dealer, and they do have a Radience on the floor. I pushed it around once, and although it was well built, and seemingly easy to use - I didn't think it was anything special.

From the little I know about the Riccar's pricing, the Miele I think is at a slightly better price-point. If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the Miele. But, don't quote me on the pricing. I don't remember what the Riccars are priced at.

Forgot to say...

In my opinion its simply the best upright out there today - no contest......

The only slight downside is the weight but in my opinion it feels VERY solid and well built!

Seamus

P.S Over here the range is priced from approx £249-£349 mine retails approx £319. I got trade cost less display discount on mine :)

The full UK range ...

Looks like this- only the 2 top models have the funky LEDs which are obviously essential :)- the TOL model gains the Hepa filter and mini turbo brush that mine lacks but I agree with Andy the Garnet Red Metallic is by far the nicest Colour!

Seamus -

I got to use the bottom of the range S7 today. I have to say, it is a darn fine machine but I don't think it's the best upright out there today. The weight for me is a serious issue. I'm not particularly strong and my house is a 3 story, 4 bed so that would be a big issue for me. I think the weight is the only thing that makes me prefer the Sebo Felix to the S7. I can't really compare the X series with the S7 because they're totally different cleaners. So for me, best upright goes to the X4 with the Felix in at close second and Miele just behind that. If it was lighter, I think I would prefer it

After months of reading about the upcoming release of this machine i'll admit i was a little underwhelmed when i saw it.

First thing i would do is match the filter cover to the body. I've been staring and staring at the machine trying to figure out why i dont like it and its that ugly contrasting filter hatch! That swivel feature and those mechanized rear wheels look like trouble. Do i see a cleanout port on the rear of the machine, beside the hose inlet?

I do love the integrated tools on back and that looks like a better agitator than Sebo. Imagine it cleans way better than Sebo X. But Sebo brushes all the way to the edge...

We need to get this machine into the hands of a YouTube video nut. My opinions are subject to change!

Hey Fred great pictures! Gotta love the versatility of a vacuum like that. It looks like its got a really good brushroll! I love it when companies go out of their way to make their vacuums quiet. I really like the picture that shows how long the cord is (very clever!).

Have you had a chance to use the vacuum on bare floors yet? It looks like it would do a good job! Thanks for posting the detailed pics!

I went to my local Miele Diamond Dealer in Omaha today and saw the S7 in person for the first time. They have the Swing on display, it is so pretty. I really love the stretch hose on it, and the long cord. The brushroll agitation to me felt a lot better and more aggressive than my Miele S5 Capricorn with SEB236 did. It really pulls the machine along, almost feels like it is self propelled! Can not wait to buy my S7 Swing in 2 weeks!

Cool video. Looks much better with the filter door matched, like this model. Nice sound too.

Are those air inlets at the front corners of the nozzle?

I agree about the filter cover color. That is why I decided to get the Swing model. Good thing my Miele Dealer is a Diamond Dealer - apparently this top end model is only available at Diamond Dealers. My next choice was going to be the Tango color.

So far I absolutely love the vacuum. I can tell it is more aggressive at cleaning than my SEB-236 was on my Capricorn. Probably because of the weight of the machine on the nozzle. You can feel that it vibrates the carpet much more than the SEB-236.

Awesome Fred! I bought this same one Saturday

I have not been here in ages and I was scratching my head at your handle, good thing you posted your picture (LOL)! Anyway, I pretty much made up my mind when I found out about these that I was going to buy one, so when I went on the website over the holidays and saw they had at last come out, and saw the price (I was expecting it to be at least $1,000, so from that standpoint I was pleasantly surprised) off I went!

Initially I'd planned to get the other red one, with the dial suction control, thinking that would be fine. (For the uninitiated, there are two models; the only real difference is one has electronic suction control with an automatic setting, the other has a simple knob, but there is a $200 difference in price). I thought that was a bit much just for that, but the plot thickens, and I guess I went on a good day!

The store I went to (a 45 year old sewing and vac shop I recently discovered, only about a mile from the site of the LA convention coincidentally!) I was waited on by one man, who demonstrated and showed me the cleaner, and I asked for the model I mentioned above. The other man (person in charge I think) said he was sure there was one in back. Turns out he had sold the last red one earlier that day, but they had yellow. It's kind of a pretty yellow like the vintage "sunny yellow" appliances, and I quietly considered it for a moment, even though I technically wanted red. The person in charge man said "well, I have the red in the other (higher end) model you see here." I said "yes, but I didn't want to pay $200 just for the upgraded suction control." Without even flinching, he said "I'll sell you this model for $749" (the two models were $699 and $899 respectively). I of course without flinching said "let's do it!"

Interestingly, I have never been a fan of using uprights for above the floor cleaning, but I have to say this thing is the absolute bomb. Aside from just wanting the new product, what clinched the deal when I went to the website was the long cord (I like to plug once and be done), and long 12' hose (I find vacuum hoses generally speaking a bit too short). It also stated that it had an anti tip device, that being a problem with this type of cleaner generally, to which I can attest. It's very simple to use the tools with this cleaner, you can attach them either to the handle directly or to an aluminum telescoping wand, very similar to what you used to get with Hoover. The hose is rather Constellation-esque and stretches for a long distance. Whatever the anti tip device is works, because the cleaner did not fall down once in cleaning the whole house. It is easy to maneuver, having those swivel casters like on the Miele canisters. It was wonderful.

Far as floor and carpet cleaning, I felt it excelled here as well. I have the standard modern day plush wall to wall carpet, some vinyl, and several area rugs, a couple low pile and one a very hefty shag (not regular shag, each "strand" is a sort of nub about 1/2" in diameter, it's really cool!). I've largely used an older metal Royal on the rugs since I moved here, which was basically fine, but this has a much more aggressive (and I suppose faster) brushroll and of course a much more powerful motor. I never used the Royal on the shag, I used to just go over it with the Miele canister's combo tool. This cleaner groomed all the rugs (including that one) beautifully and in some spots you could really hear stuff going into the cleaner! With the brushroll turned off it also did a fine job on the bare floors and bathroom scatter rug. Another nice feature is the handle release footswitch. If, while you're cleaning, you go from say a bare floor to carpet or carpet to area rug (a step "up") you can step on it and it lifts the front right up and off you go. All the height adjustment is automatic, a boon as compared to Royal's screw type adjustment (I had it set for the wall to wall and never changed it for the area rugs even though I probably should have).

The headlight, as Fred pointed out, is really nice, and the controls are convenient. The on off and brushroll switch are right on the handle, and suction controls right in front of you. One handy feature is that the brushroll shuts off in the upright position, regardless of switch position, nice if you're going back and forth between rug cleaning and use of tools. Which brings me to the "automatic" setting, something at first assumption I figured to be maybe "cool" but of limited real world practicality. I could not have been more wrong on this point and I am so happy that I wound up with this model. It handled the transitions of various surfaces, particularly in above the floor cleaning beautifully, and it's kind of cool you can hear it speed up and slow down depending on what you're doing. If you switch from automatic back to manual, it even remembers the last setting you'd used in manual mode. The bags and filter are very convenient to change.

For my part, I give this thing a 20 on a scale of 1 to 10 and two thumbs up all at once. I thought I'd be buying it sort of as an "enthusiast" type thing, which I technically did, but even aside from that as a standard vacuum consumer, I am very pleased with my investment and the value I got for my money. I don't know what took so long or what that whole rebadged Panasonic business was all about (nothing wrong with Panasonic, just odd for such a high end company to have done that), but once they decided to come out with this they really seemingly thought of everything. It uses the same motor as the canister and is similarly quiet. The brushroll makes more sound than the cleaner itself.

For the modern day cleaners, I really think Miele is pretty much the cream of the crop in any configuration, particularly for those of us who detest a noisy cleaner, which are so prolific today. I have had a mid line Miele canister (no power nozzle) for many years which I have loved and has served me well. I bought it on Ebay slightly used from a woman who decided on a whim to upgrade to the then top end unit (Blue Moon maybe?). I always thought of upgrading especially after the 236 nozzle came out, but doing rugs with a canister just doesn't do it for me (I'm always getting tangled up in the cord or hose and I guess I've just never quite got it down) and it never would have been my only cleaner like this upright could be.

Really, for things like doing my blinds, ceiling fan and things like this, this upright is far easier to deal with. Actually, I'd like to see them take a cue from this new upright and try a longer cord and a 12' hose on the already fine canister line. The length of the cord and hose are the primary things I would want to change if anything, on my canister.

Wonderful Review!

More and more I'm falling in lust with the S7. And at last the machine is being listed on Miele.ca. Note the 'windy' names for the Canadian Models. USA Models are 'dance' themed.

The white one - Mistral - at Canadian tire is still priced at only $499, and playing with it at CanTire gives me a feel for how smoothly and conveniently it operates. That long & light hose & wand combo really is useful. But I know I'd be unhappy with a snow white S7. The red one - Viento - is equally lovely tho red is not my favorite colour.

But now - almost - comes the ice blue 7580 'Marin' with electronic control that pleases my eye. It's supposed to be here February 1.

So it would seem that Canada is not going to get the other Electronic versions. I will have to contact Miele Canada about this. The Blue Marin has captured my heart...

Dave

This is the USA Miele site that offers all six models and the ice blue one we're going to get up here. Whee! Like Can/Am Miele canister S5s the model names are inexplicable. One can only hope the price will be as proportionally reasonable to the $499 Mistral.

Odd that they're selling almost $200 cheaper in Canada. Dysons sell for $100 more in Canada than the US. So in fact you cold buy the white one here in Canada for about $375 US at Cdn tire.. not sure what the other color is selling for in vac shops. Canadian Tire is the only retailer for the white model apparently.
