I must have found at least five of these with the silver/chrome logo, but this is the first one I've found with the Red/Yellow logo and I've always wanted to have one of these...

The LX is a wonderful machine, built like a tank and was of course the machine that introduced the concept of "see no dirt, touch no dirt, breathe no dirt" with the self-sealing paper bags and the automatic ejection system. It was an engineering triumph.

However, from a design standpoint, it's clearly the "ugly step sister" to its older sister, the XXX. A good case study of comparing one machine designed by a world renowned industrial designer and one designed by an in-house committee. The LX is klunky looking and its lines and proportions are out of balance; gone is the sleek streamlining that made the Lurelle Guild machine a museum masterpiece.

And it was somewhat of a failure from a practical standpoint: Back in those days, 99% of a vacuum cleaner's user base was comprised of housewives. For many women the LX was too heavy and cumbersome, oversized and hard to move around the house. This was made worse if the cord winder and Companion (tool rack) were added. Fully equipped, the LX weighs a formidible 37 pounds!

An attempt was made to at least make it easier to move about by adding clip-on after-market rear wheels. These only added to the kludgy appearance of the machine and really didn't do much to address the problem since too much weight rested on each individual wheel.

Then, just before the model expired in favor of the E-Automatic -- which was a vast improvement on the LX in just every regard -- the clip-on wheels were replaced with a set of wheels on a rear axle that balanced and distributed the weight, and a large swiveling rubber caster was added to the front end. Seeing and feeling the hefty LX trundle along on its wheels is a lovely and satisfying experience. It gracefully glides along like a locomotive.

Don't get me wrong; I admire the LX very much and have all of the various iterations of it. But that admiration cannot diminish or overlook the several flaws embodied in that machine. It's really surprising that it was as successful as it was -- which, I suppose, is a testament to the brand-name power of Electrolux ... and their very aggressive sales campaigns.

On finding a great machine. It is very worth having and a collection would not be complete without it. Indeed, as Charles Richard said, it was a heavy machine!! But look at the picture above, an incredible collection of bits and parts. And the first with the self-sealing self-ejecting bag. Totally fabulous. Would I use it everyday? NOT. But well worth having. Congratulations. We'll get you all the parts and make it wonderful. I had to have a complete one. It is beautiful.

Robert,

Enjoy your LX, a picture of mine made it into the post-convention newsletter. They are fun machines! I too prefer the yellow/red (can never remember the name of the stuff) nameplates on the sides. Yay, for you. I did beat you on the price however, got mine on EBay for $0.99! Shipping of course was $600.32! Maybe you did get a better deal...HA!

Just plain old ordinary stupendous fantastic congratulations to you, Robert! Fantastic machine in jubilant colors with extremely well-engineered mechanicals. Yer gonna luv ejecting bags across the room into the baseboards. Mmm, there's an idea for the next Convention - The LX Bag Toss Competition. :-)

Be careful when lifting or you'll get a hernia. Very pretty. I don't vacuum with it, but we have had fun playing launch the bag to see how far the machine shoots it.

Robert,
Congratulations on a great find.
There is something very special about this machine.
I think many of us relate maybe just a little too much to the bag ejection.
I think that happens to be the sweet spot with that machine ....
Remember at the Omaha convention when we tried to see how far the bag would eject ... a real fascination with the crowd (made me chuckle)
Enjoy your great find.
Can't wait to see it tricked out in prestine reconditioned condition.
Pat

Robert Congratulations on a great find and a great piece of Electrolux history!! Good thing you go to the gym as you will need lots of power to move that machine around!!!!

Does the bag-launcher work? I love how they pop halfway across the room! Terry and wiled away more than a few minutes a couple of years ago playing with mine when we should have been getting ready for the convention! I'm glad you finally found one.

Does the bag-launcher work?

Hey are you saying my house is that dirty that one good vacuuming session would fill the bag and make it launch. ***eyebrows up*** ***hands on hips***

just kidding :-)

I'll let you know when I've filled the bag up with dog hair and other dirt around the house. I set the dial to launch at its lowest point.

Ejector!

Try cleaning your oven with it.

That'd get it to pop real quick.

:-)

One of these days Robert you are going to have to let Greg and I have a go at that oven!!!LOL

You can't wait to fill the bag to see if the ejector works!! just use toliet paper. I believe that is what Greg and I did.

Looks like it's in nice condition. Although the LX and LXI aren't exactly my favorite Lux models, I'm always glad to hear when someone finds a machine they've long been looking for. And sonds like you got a great deal on it, too.
Jeff
