Ok, so I'm perusing one of the local thrift shops a few weeks ago and am about ready to leave when something caught my eye. I spotted a Hoover Convertible 65 behind the counter. It appeared to me it was what the thrift store used to vacuum the floors there so it wasn't for sale to the public. It was late in the day and I didn't figure anyone there could sell it to me. I went back the next day, in the late afternoon and asked if I could buy it. The asst manager told me I'd have to talk to the manager and she wasn't in until Monday. I came back on Monday after work but she was already gone. I proceeded to revisit the store several more times before I almost gave up. I decided I would have to call the manager on the phone most likely. So that's what I did last Tuesday. When I asked about the vacuum, the manager said it didn't work. So I told her I had one already and needed that one for parts. This is true, I already have a 65 and it does need some parts. So she thought about it a bit and then came back and said I could just have it and she would be there until 9 pm that day. I went in after work and picked it up. Why I got so excited is this vacuum has the original bag in pretty good shape and the cord is original. My other 65 has the wrong plug and a replacement bag and it's missing the headlight lens. And it actually does run. I'm not sure why the store thought it was broken. It does need the bearings greased, but that's normal. So below is a pic of my new "free" Hoover Convertible 65. I will be combining my two 65's to make one good one.

Terry, it does work as far as I can tell. It doesn't sound very good which is probably just due to the bearings needing some grease. I haven't taken it apart yet, but I plan to soon. I wonder if the store just didn't want to deal with changing the bag as it is very full. I haven't emptied it yet. The thrift store seems to have different vacuums behind the counter from time to time so I imagine they switch them out frequently.

Congratulations Chad!!!! When you called me to tell me about this 65 before you got it I started planning a way to come up for a visit and bringing some black face masks and baseball bats. We were gonig to wait till about midnight then break into the store and take that vacuum ( leaving another in it place of coarse) and run like hell. Na just kidding. I was very excited for you though. I knew you would get it. ( the leagal way lol)

I am sending mine off to Marty Kaplan for a face lift. I am not happy with the paint job I did on the new hood. The color is fine but the feel of it just doesn't feel right. A little to rough. Oh please help me Marty!!!!!!!!!

All bottom fill convertibles used the same bag. Type C. They can be found easily online or ACE Hardware stores usually carry them. The belts are standard as well. ACE or an online vendor should have those as well.
