A older lady came in a few weeks ago and had a cloth hoover bag with holes in it. It was for a model 28 I asked her how long sence it was serviced. she sed it had ben a long time. I told her to bring it in for service and I had a new cloth for it. the last time it was serviced was 1957 it was in bad need of a grease job and new brush strips, cloth bag and cord. she loves the dusting tools for it. but the hose was shot, so I put a new hose on the old ends. I had fun working on this as model 28 hoovers are my fav. It felt good to work on somthing good for a change, getting sick of wallmart junk that comes in all the time. but I still get in older luxes and hoovers and eureks form time to time.

Nice!

I'm working on one of those right now actually. Don't have a bag for it unfortunately, but I do have the bag retainer. Just finished working on the motor tonight....had to undercut some of the mica on the commutator, but she purrs now! Needs new brushroll though....which is turning out to be a PAIN to find anything for. I'm afraid I'm gonna have to resort to trying to rebristle the one that's in it. I don't want to have to do that, but I can't find parts for this thing ANYWHERE! Getting to be kind of frustrating.... I'm hoping the work pays off in the end though....

need to be replased. a convertbile bearing will work but you need to drill out the rivets and use the old housing.

What did you use to clean off that painted base?
I'm always so afraid of doing much to those main bodies; I ruined a 115 and almost ruined a 61 when I got them wet. The paint was never quite the same.

Eric...

There is an older gentleman in the VCCC that does rebristling and from what I have heard, he does a very fine job and still takes in new jobs.

Does anyone in the VCCC know the name of this man? Does he in fact still do it?

Chris,

I have to second what Terry Lattz just said, what Wonderful Service! It seems customer service has become a thing of the past, yet you went out of your way to make this woman very happy.

Great Job!!! Thanks for making sure an older machine didn't get replaced with some new plastic thing.

I hope she tells all her friends what you did, that is a super job and service you did for her. When Thurman's was in business in Ft. Pierce, you might have gotten a similar deal. The 90 something year old Mr. Mc Nee here, only sells and services new junk. He's a holdover from the past here too, but.......

Yes indeed, very fine job! That's truly "old school" service. I will say, there are still vac shops who attend to this level of detail, and one of them is Boulevard Vacuum here in Los Angeles - I've mentioned them many times in the past.

Boulevard Vac was started in 1949 and is still run by the original family; the founder's son Ron is now the owner. When they get in old machines like this, they lavish the same sort of care on them although it would be smarter, business wise, to convince the customer that her "dust-belching dirt-breeder" should be thrown out and replaced with a new plastic marvel (that will self-destruct in a month). They have loyal customers who have been coming in for decades for new purchases and service.

Quite a few times I've gotten calls from Ron, "Say, do you have a replacement switch for a Lux 30..." and so on. Always happy to help him when I can. One time a man had brought in a really nice Hoover 150 for service (don't know if he was the original owner or not). The bag needed replacing and he wanted an original replacement for it! Of course, he had to be told the disappointing news that such a bag had not been available for quite a few years, although Ron did call me "just in case," to see if I had one.

btw, great Electrolux boxes in the background! Do they contain the original machines? If I'm not mistaken, the one on the bottom is the 1949 XXX and the one on top is the turquoise G. I'd **LOVE** to have that G box!!

Again, a thousand accolades on your fine work!

A real treat

Chris,

.......to see a smashing cleaner given a new lease of life. The 28 appears to be the US version of our UK / 'Perivale' made 262. I was running a friends 262 about 2 weeks ago, which is a 'minter' and the power (325 watts) / weight ratio is perfect !!!

I am just old enough (50 next april) to remember 28 / 262 in older peoples houses / service shops but now all you sell are those horrid DYSONS and yes the 'WALMART' offerings.

Well done and regards, Walter, UK.

262 Wattage...

Do the UK models have larger motors? My 28 is rated at 300w, and when plugged into a wattmeter, indeed reads about 300w on startup. Just curious!

Post# 51853 , Reply# 40   9/19/2008 at 17:03 (5,668 days old) by samotronic ()

I also have another question. By the way, beautiful job with this!! I would love to bring my model 65 convertible to you and see what you could do with the warped motor head. I know, can't fix that on that model and everyone has that problem. Anyhow, my question is this. The owner claimed that she loved the dusting tools. Was the suction on that particular design, with attachments, better than on later "convertible" models? I have always looked at model 28 and the early 61- 64 models from afar and wondered if that side tool conversion approach was better than the convertible's

Wonderful. Looks fabulous with those carefully chosen replacement parts. The owner is one lucky lady!

When and if i reach the age of this machine, how wonderful it would be to be as easily and thoroughly rejuvenated!

Does anyone know where one can obtain the special tip that goes on the grease gun to grease the bearings? I would like to be able to grease the bearings on my Convertibles and that tool would make it so much easier. Thanks in advance.

Confirmation of what I told you on the phone....

Hi Chris :-)

Just wanted to get my comments in writing that I gave you over the phone when we spoke yesterday. What an awesome job you did on that 28!!! I have not seen service nor heard of any like it that compares with what you gave that lady and her beautiful 28. You went way above the "call of duty" for that 28 and its owner. Wow, I hope she leaves it in her will for you !! My Vac collection IS in my will to be sure someone gets them who wants and appreciates them. God forbid I should die before my time :-). Again Chris, it was great talking with you yesterday (sorry to have bothered you during business hours tho) and keep up the great service you provide to your customers and how you talk with them when they visit your store. I overheard the one conversation you had with a customer and you spoke with knowledge and politeness. A big thumbs up to you !!!

for all the kind words. the hoover grease nozzle tip is N.L.A. from hoover. but I would think you could take a grease gun and foce grease in the bearing if you dont have a nozzle tip.

electrolux box

is from a model G it has a date of 1965 stamped on the bottom. was found at a house sale in the box pile for customers to take ther junk home in.

Hoover 28 tool suction is ok for dusting, thats all. the models 60-64 do have a bit better suction, still not great. the convertibles have a bit better because of the two spead motor.

hose suction

i personally find better hose suction with my 1952 612 side conversion than my 1970 652c rear conversion 2speed. when you put a fresh bag on suction is quite good through the hose but it seems to weaken after the first hour, as if the paper bag pores clog with dust, however, the 612 with cloth bag only and single speed seems to provide stronger more long lasting suction

Hose Suction

Interesting. This confirms what I always thought. My mother and aunts that owned convertibles (model 65 pink through the early 60s light blue model - US) at that time, always looked down their noses at the tool suction, either didn't buy the tools or threw them away and insisted on having a canister for above floor cleaning. A shame that Hoover couldn't improve the performance at the time considering all the hype about tool conversion. I figured since this lady loved her dusting tools for so many years that they must be better with side conversion. And I'm sure even better now after this overhaul.

Do not grease the top sleeve bearing. they do not need lube. but you can use some Q-tips, with some motor oil to cleen the bearing if needed.

Do original issue model 28 top bearings require grease or were they designed to run dry or with light oiling as with Convertibles?
