NuTone Central Vacuum
[Down to Last]

Hello All, just posting about central vacs & the one they installed in my home.

Central vac systems weren't even on my radar until many years ago: I was helping restore a 1929 movie palace in North Jersey. They had both a Spencer Central Vacuum & a Spencer Orgoblo in the theatre's basement. (The central vac wasn't being used anymore.)

Later on, two older elementary schools nearby that I've been in had inlets remaining along with piping leading to their basements, but the units were long gone.

In 2006/07, my wife & I decided to build a home in a new development. Because of a reason we won't get into here, we found ourselves with a sizable chunk of change to add upgrades to our new home. One of these was a full-house Central Vacuum System for $2250. 7 outlets (3 upstairs, 3 down... and a utility next to the unit in the basement). We checked the box for it & it was installed as the house was being built.

When we moved in, we saw that the unit was a builder's-grade NuTone VX475. Received a large box of accessories with it (CK250). It honestly worked great.... for a little over two years.

After the warranty ended... so did this unit. I later came to find out that the "VX" series from NuTone were so bad, they actually stopped the assembly lines to make a couple critical fixes. (I also read about this on Vacuumland... see Post 137553, Reply #10) When I contacted NuTone about this, they sent out a "Post-fix" unit at no charge, even though outside of the warranty. They didn't even want the non-working unit back!

I was skeptical about the "fix"... I also gave it 2 years.

Welp, here we are 16 years later.... unit works just as strong as it ever did. Yep, it actually does a great job in our home, & love how it vents outside. We can hardly hear it when it runs & I've picked up a few extra parts for it (duplicates of the original parts that came with it when new just to future-proof in.... even grabbed a few NOS outlets in case we break one of them.)

Yes, yes... I know there's some distain for central vacs, builder's grade units, NuTone-anything, broccoli.... but we love using the lightweight hose to do our vacuuming... doesn't bother us one bit.

Here's to many more years with our NuTone Central Vacuum!

Certainly a central vac is better than no central vac at all or even a portable. Good thing you stocked up on a whole bunch of bags cause they've since been discontinued. In fact all parts for the VX series are no longer made except for the motor, they were just so bad.

I had high hopes for NuTone ever since DrainVac bought them out but to my disappointment, DrainVac is selling Pure Power units with the DrainVac logo on them. I was told by DrainVac they were selling off the PP units and build something new for NuTone but so far that hasn't happened. I think just like NuTone, DrainVac is also going downhill since their quality check has been terrible with units being shipped out with defective motors and now Think Vacuums is the US distrubuter for DrainVac as they also have terrible support from my experience. Thankfully you can swap out these NuTone units for something else that's more powerful, quieter, and greener. There are just better options out there today.

Good thing we have one of the POST-fix VX's!

Wouldn't bother swapping to a different central vac NOW, as our NuTone is still doing an amazing job. Maybe in ANOTHER 16 years... we'll see, but she's rock solid right now... couldn't be happier!

If you need a new motor or relay switch, you can order them from MD Manufacturing.

Interesting. I had thought by the 2000s that Nutone had ditched their proprietary inlets and were using the industry standard Canplas and Hayden inlets.

Nice setup!

I'm glad you were able to get a new machine, post-fix. I like your shelves full of spares also.

I, too, would never want to be without a central vacuum system. They are how I make my living, but also how I clean my own home. 100+ vacuums here and the only one I'm inclined to pick up actual dirt with is my CVS (incidentally, I use a dual motor MD system from the late 1980s).

Very intrigued about your work at the theatre...any pictures of their setup? I recently was involved in getting a dual Spencer vacuum system at the Detroit Masonic Temple functioning again. It's from the mid 1920s and had been used until about 20 years ago, limping along with only one or two operators instead of the eight or ten the system was originally designed for. Original DC motors!

Later NuTone Inlets

Beagledad:

Actually, our NuTone inlets installed in 2007 were the second-to-last inlets (of the 360-type) that NuTone offered. I've attached pics of the final ones in the 360 series that came out sometime after our installation. They only came in 2 colors (ours came in 5), and the covers were a bit thicker with a larger lip on the top. They also moved the NuTone logo higher up closer to the lip.

Theatre central vac

Centralvacs1928:

It's been a while since I was in that theatre. It's the Loew's Jersey Theatre in Jersey City, NJ, one of the 5 Loew's "Wonder Theatres" that opened in the NJ/NY area between 1929/1930. No, I'm sorry... didn't take any pix while there, but the huge basement was chock full of old mechanical equipment... switchboards, starters/exciters, old air conditioning equipment &, of course, the Spencer central vac: large cylinder painted red attached to a motor. Inlets scattered all throughout this huge theatre.

They're now doing a multi-year, multi-million $$ restoration of the Loew's Jersey. Honestly not sure what the future of their central vac will be...

Loews Jersey

Actually I have a pic saved (found online somewhere) of the machine at Loews Jersey! Shame about all the boxes and junk in front of it.

Poor thing needs some TLC. If they don't recommission it and start using it again, let's hope they at least leave it be.

You sure that's from the Loew's Jersey?

Maybe my memory's failing, but that doesn't look like the basement of the Loew's Jersey. Are you sure that pic came from there? I remember it being different.

I stand corrected!!

It's been a while... I remembered SOMETHING red in that room.... it was the giant sprinkler pump reservoir tank to the right of the central vac that was the culprit.

(And thanks for the link... brought back some great memories. Last time I set foot in that building had to be 2009-ish.)

Now, off to fire up the NuTone... :)
