I don’t own a vacuum shop, but one trick I have for bagged upright vacuums is: always bring the handle down to the operating position before turning on the vacuum. And always turn off the vacuum before returning the handle to the upright’s storage position. This way you put less strain on the disposable paper bags and also it helps completely clear out the dirt path in the motor head and the neck of the bag before shutting off the vacuum.

Forgot to mention…this trick works for classic old-fashioned fan-first uprights. Really does not apply to bag-first uprights where the bag is inflated by the suction motor at the bottom of a bag chamber.
