The Model 1424 eBay photos below provide some insights on Eureka's timeline of 1400-Series changes as well as general production (the advertising years identified may not be actual production years):

1. The 1400-Series 3.3-amp motor was discontinued circa 1976 and succeeded by the 3.5-amp motor.

2. The 1400- & 2000-Series vertical bag logo w/logomark decal replaced the silk-screened version circa 1976 (these probably became detached in the Types B & D photos, or the bag covers were replacements).

3. The 1400-Series tapestry bag design cover used on many models made way for plain white ones circa 1980.

4. The classic hood's headlight visor was redesigned c.1980 (see the close-up photos of Types D & E).

5. The 1400-Series models, introduced in 1973, were likely equipped with pancake motors. Blender motors were introduced circa 1974 going by the addition of hood vents that year. (The individual photo is a Model 1424-E posted on VL by CW—showing that the non-vented hood was on more than one).

6. The non-vented hood of the Model-Type 1424-E (and others) shows that it is not always an indicator of a pre-1975 manufacture. The use of pancake motors may have been to deplete the 3.5-amp stock to make way for the new 4.0-amp motors or for a store exclusive model.

Re reply #2: Model 1457-A

Thanks for your photos. I had missed that particular model when compiling my lists; it must have had a limited run in the late run from the late '70s to circa 1980, and again with a 4.0-amp motor and different hood in the late 1980s.

I've noticed that Eureka often sold at least 2 similar versions of its vacuum cleaners—among the possible differences would be the hood, headlight or not, # of dial positions, cord reel, et cetera. In this case, the 1457-A & 2042-E were marketed together as the 1980 ad indicates—the main differences being the hood and brush roll designs.

I was unable to locate a photo of the later 1457 type.

On Closer Inspection ...

A 1979 Model 1457 ad identified its V-G II brush roll, so the main differences between it and the Model-Type 2042-E lie in the hood—the broader headlight lens and side rather than top vents indicating a pancake motor.

Also, the apparent differences between the Model 1424 and 1457 would be the brand and Dial-A-Nap settings decal, hand grip on the 1457, and the brush roll (Disturbulator on the 1424 versus the V-G II).

The Model 1425 was a pared down version of the 1424 sans headlight and with a 4-way D-A-N (the later 4-amp types' bases were blue, and had V-G IIs). It makes me wonder if the 1457 also had a pared down model option in white & orange.

Eureka’s Dial-a-Nap Upright Model 2042 turned into the company’s most dependable and widely sold model in the mid 1970’s. It was the top-rated upright in Consumer Reports 1973 testing and earned a “Best Buy” award by CR because it provided excellent value for the price. It had just enough deluxe features to make it an excellent carpet cleaner (Vibra Groomer brush roll, headlight, metal motor hood, switch on the front of the handle, Dial-a-Nap height adjuster) without too many other bells and whistles. It was positioned at the very centre of Eureka’s upright line-up, with progressively trimmed down models below it, and progressively enhanced models above it.

The 2042 survived many decades under other model numbers, and to this day is sold under the Sanitaire name - though the latest versions don’t have a headlight or finger switch on the handle.
