Just for fun, I thought I would share some of the vacuums that child me would drool over (and still kind of want today)
1. 2009 Dirt Devil Beeze Bagless This is A machine that I think I first discovered when I went to one of my old babysitter's houses. They had 2 of them, one with a red handle and large DD logo on the bin, and one with a smaller logo on the top part of the bin; with that orange and yellow "Breeze" sticker on it, and it was darker red. They also had a red TTI model vision of some kind, and a Rigid shop vac. Those machines are what I think of when I think of a bare-bones bagless vacuum (and I mean, they kind of are). As for their performance and quality, I can't really say, other than that they eat through belts, but considering it was a TTI model... that probably speaks to it's quality. I have heard that they're solid carpet cleaners for being cheap bagless uprights. 2. Shark Rotators At another one of my babysitters' old houses, I'd often see the infomercials for various Shark products of the mid to late 2010s, the notable ones being for the Rotator Lift Away, Rocket, Powered Lift Away, Lift Away Duo-Clean, and others. Needless to say, 6 y/o was sold on them. On top of this, my school had an NV572 that I got the honor of using a few times, and I remember loving it. I also had a half-relative who owned a Duo-Clean Speed model, and I also liked that one too. Finally, my school bought an NV365e after their previous Oreck U2000 broke, along with a basic Shark Wandvac. Both of these presumably conked out and were replaced with, ironically enough, another Oreck. Anyways, I'm not sure what model/models I'd want to get. For sure, I want to get a Rotator and Rotator Powered Lift-Away, but not any of the most recent models. I'd probably relegate these machines to being quick clean-up vacs, much like my XL9100 as I've heard their deep cleaning performance is not the greatest. Plus, they're bagless, and getting parts isn't easy. So there's that. 3. Sanitare Force QuietClean SC5845D This is another machine my elementary school had, and got the chance to use a few times. It's not one that I'm scratching at the bits for, but if I found one that was cheap enough and in good condition, and if I had the room and money for one, I'd buy it. I can't really gauge it's cleaning performance as when I was finally able to use theirs, it was in rough shape to put it lightly... 4. Hoover Windtunnel Max UH 30600 I first found out about this machine after one of my neighbors bought one for their homes (which by the way, they had their own sort of collection, but I don't think they were collectors). I really like the look of it, and it seems like a decent bagged option for those who have $200 to spend on a machine. It seems like the modern Hoover equivalent to the Eureka the Boss Smart Vac, take that how you will. 5. Dirt Devil Breeze Turbo bagged upright This is a machine that I saw in my local grocery store, and since it was one of the few bagged vacuums in the aisle at that time, I was naturally drawn to it. I think the thing I liked about it most was how it had its turbo brush holder on the wand like a bagless vacuum, yet it was bagged. There are plenty of bagged vacuums that come with turbo brushes, but not as many have it stored on the front of the handle like a bagless machine. Anyways, for my First Communion, I asked my grandma for what I thought was that machine, as a local vacuum store advertised a similar machine in a newspaper listing. As it turns out, it was a Dirt Devil Featherlite bagged (only the bottom half of the machine was visible in the ad). It's the same model, only it didn't have a turbo brush, but it did have a height adjustment knob and a stretch hose. As for performance and quality, well... it's a TTI Dirt Devil, and the bag door on mine is busted open, so it doesn't have the same level of suction that it used to. I also don't like how there's only a dusting brush and no upholstery tool. I feel as though an upholstery tool, dusting brush, extension wand, and crevice tool should be the bare minimum on cheap machines, but I digress. Can anyone else relate to liking these machines? |

I really liked the Breeze bagless. My grandparents had one with a manual height adjuster called the Jaguar and it was the best performing vacuum they've ever had, it outcleaned both of their Kirbys and Kenmore upright. And I like the QuietClean, it's basically the commercial version of the Eureka Whirlwind Litespeed. I would've liked the Eureka more than the Dirt Devil had they bought it instead back in 2004 but I'm sure the Dirt Devil still cleans better which is why I'm glad they bought the Dirt Devil.

Wow, I wouldn't think they'd be THAT good. However, the ones I want only have a floating automatic height adjustment. Also, if I were to get a Lightspeed, I'd want to get one with an electrostatic duster, or buy one off of Ebay and put in on the machine. It seems a bit like a counter-intuitive gimmick, but a neat one. I'm just not a huge fan of how they look on the machines. but whatever. Also, if I were to get any of the bagless dream machines of mine, I probably wouldn't use them super often, as I'd be worried about filtration, filter maintenance, and having to take the bin outside to empty it.
On this note, part of me also wants to get some "bagless converts" vacuums. Basically, vacuums that were originally designed as bagless machines, but had their dirt cups switched out for tanks that hold bags in them. Think the Bissell Velocity, Eureka Maxima bagged, and others. I find them so quirky in a good way. |

Because of my age, the only thing remotely qualifying as a childhood dream vacuum technically wouldn't qualify for this section, but rather the Vintage section. The one vacuum I saw as aspirational and out of reach as a child was the Kirby Classic Omega I saw demonstrated in our living room when I was about 10 years old. I thought it was the coolest thing ever and was quite disappointed when we didn't get one. I then felt a bit taunted when I saw one parked beside the fiction section of my elementary school's library, which was the only carpeted space in the school. Over the years, it stayed in the back of my mind that being able to have a Kirby was a worthwhile aspiration. Fast forward some 40 years, and I ended up getting my first Kirby, for free--from beside a dumpster! Fast forward another decade, and I now have more Kirbys than I know what to do with, but ironically, none of them is a Classic Omega.

I can relate to them being quiet. There was one time when I was younger when I was at my grandparent's house. They had 2 Shark Powered Lift-Aways, one for their upstairs, and one for their basement. They let me vacuum their basement one of them, but before I did, I had to get someone else to turn it on for me, since I was afraid of the noise (I was like 6 or 7 I think, for the record). When it was turned on, I realized it wasn't super loud, and so I quite enjoyed it for that, and its other gimmicks. Ironically enough, these same grandparents have a few Sebo Feilxes, one of which started my love for Sebo and quiet vacuums in general.
I can also relate to their current lineup being confusing. I haven't been keeping up with them for a while. What I do know is that I don't like the look of them. I think the last new Shark infomercial I watched was for the Vertex, which kind of opened me up to how bad the infomercials actually were. Firstly, the Duo clean system is an absolute joke in my opinion. Anything it can do, a bare bones hard floor tool can do, and for 400 bucks less. Shark makes out large debris to be the Achilles' heel of 90% of vacuum cleaners, which it may be if you try to pick it up with the main cleaner head, but 1., you more than likely aren't going to encounter large amounts of debris (and conversely, mountains of fine debris), and if you did, you can just pick it up with the hose. Canister vacuums are more suitable for bare floors than uprights IMO. Secondly, the anti-tangle brushrolls. I don't really have much to say on them, as I've never used one that had that feature. However, cleaning hair off brushrolls is annoying at worst. I'd much rather have a brushroll that can be easily removed for cleaning/replacing, like a Sebo brushroll. There's also the PowerFins, which I wrote off as just a worse version of a normal brushroll, but I can't really say since I've never owned a machine with them. However, they don't give me high hopes. Then there's the PowerDetect... If the DuoClean nozzle was a joke, then the PowerDetect is an entire circus. Why would I want varying power speed for an upright? That's just going to give you inconsistently cleaned carpets and floors. The touch-pad control switch also seems unnecessary, and just another fancy thing to break, as does the edge-cleaning headlight. I already put little trust into edge-cleaning claims on vacuums, and turning off one headlight when I'm up to an edge doesn't change this. In short, I'm an old guy who doesn't understand these new-fangled Sharks and their fancy features, so I prefer my mid 2010s Sharks.

Yeah, I get it. I'm probably one of the younger members on this site, so my childhood vacs may not be relatable to older folks I guess. Also, I remember you mentioning your love for the Kirby CLassics in another thread. As for me, while I like the look of the Classic and Classic III, the deal breaker for me is the dump-out bags, which is a real pity. The Kirbys I'd want to get if I were to get more Kirbys are the Heritage ii, Generation 3, G5 (maybe), G6, Sentria, and Sentria ii (again mabye).
By the way, you're cat is so cute in that Heritage I bag :] |
