Came across this on an auction site. I've heard mention of it but never seen one before. It's pretty clearly quite old and it looks to be missing it's wheels and outer bag.

Yes indeed! Forerunner to the NSS Pig. 1910s era.

The F. Bissell Co. of Toledo was no relation to Bissell of Grand Rapids, and in fact the latter sued the former to get them to change their name, after which F. Bissell became the National Super Service Company, still in business today.

These were quickly outmoded for home use but found success in commercial applications, especially once the "snout" was added to stop heavy objects entering the fan. I believe this change took place in the 1930s.

Hand Tool Rescue did an excellent restoration video on one. His has a grinding wheel installed on the rear, and these units were marketed as being a multi purpose "home motor" in addition to a vacuum cleaner:

I just assumed it was the Bissell we're all familiar with but to know it was another company entirely is interesting.

BTW I sent an email off to you asking about a motor shell It's probably in your junk folder

Is the email in your profile current? I was just checking to see if you had a discarded housing for a 7.2" motor. I'm looking to make a "pod" to connect to my canavac so that I can try out a series motor machine. Already got a matching motor that was "Open box" for a good price.
