I saw this video awhile back of Jay Leno talking with a kid who was into vacuums and one of the phots displayed was of the Hoover Display I would assume in Ohio, of course during the 1990s. I just wanted to know if anyone could identify which type of canister is at the top of the display? Is it a PowerMax/Spctrum etc? Cant quite make it out? I know the other is a Tempo and the other is a Futura but Im kind of lost as to what the top one is.

The only thing keeping me from saying Futura is that it has the tool cover door, and from the looks of it a built in cord rewind. SOME Futuras did have a rewind but most if not all had no door cover. Im leaning towards PowerMax but I cant tell which version.

I think it was one of the Spectrum models. This looks like the very early 90’s line up. Powermax canisters came out around 1993.

The upper one is a Hoover PowerMax.

The circled red one in my photo on the right is an entry level Hoover Futura with manual wrap storage. That power head would not have a headlight and have a single row bristle agitator. The one in that photo is missing another wand which makes it look very short. It would have two wands. Third photo uploaded. I think the model number is S3561 but I'm not definite on that.

The second one circle on the left circled in green in my first photo is a Hoover PowerMax S3603-040. It was circa 1994. That PowerMax had brush roll on/ off, cord rewind, covered tool storage. See second uploaded photo. ***The hose on my unit shown was replaced with a black hose and better material. The original hose for it would have been beige with beige gas pump handle like my later photos and a much more rigid hose material that kinked heavily.
There were many PowerMax canisters over the years but that one was just called PowerMax.

I've had both of those models over time.

I added more photos too, all of which are my machine. I sold the Futura to another collector and no longer have it. I still have my PowerMax and it will never leave my collection. It is a childhood model of mine.

Also, there was another PowerMax with same color and same feature level but different logos during the earlier period when Hoover used numbers instead of adjectives for their naming schema.
In the early 90s Hoover named various machines from a number such as the Hoover Legacy 810 upright or Spectrum 900 canister, Elite 350 upright, etc. In the mid 90s, they eliminated the numbers and used adjectives: Supreme, Plus, Ultra, Deluxe, etc.

I always wondered why these Hoover power nozzles had necks that were off center. Did this make it awkward to push in a straight line? Was it designed to allow better maneuvering around chair legs and corners? Any idea what the purpose was?

I forget the explanation, I think it was to counter balance weight. These power heads are very easy to maneuver, steer and push!!

Honestly the real explanation is probably just by design. It was a 12" nozzle. Hoover used a straight forward directing duct that flared out into the brush area. There were no bends, turns or hoses in the power heads. The duct was positioned directly past the motor and it was only a 12" power head.
