I found this picture last night of a tennis player winning a Hoover Windtunnel as I think a promotional gift at a tennis match in New York. I was a kid in 1998, but this is my first time learning about the "Clean Sweep Award".

The caption on Getty Images is:

"NEW YORK, UNITED STATES: Martina Hingis of Switzerland takes her new Hoover vacumn [sic] cleaner for a spin across the court after she was given the Clean Sweep Award by the Hoover Company 17 November at the Chase Championships in New York. AFP PHOTO/Matt CAMPBELL "

I found an online tennis website that also wrote about it:

"In addition to claiming a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory, Hingis received the Hoover Clean Sweep Award for her consistent play at the year's Grand Slam events. 'You're trying to make a housewife out of me,' Hingis exclaimed upon being presented with a vacuum". Sounds like not the most welcome gift lol

Has anyone else heard of this? Very interested to learn more.

Hoover was known to do all kinds of things like that. Geat ad, huh?

I wonder which Hoover model was given to Hingis. Since she is from Switzerland, it would only make sense that she received a 220 volt cleaner fitted with the correct plug for Swiss electrical outlets. Curious to know….
