I believe the Amway was the very first of it's kind, then the Fantom came right after it. In the mid eighties the amway sold for about 600 plus $$

darn powerful suction on the Fury, too.

aeoliandave's profile picture
but they are growly noisy. I'll measure it one the gauge and get back to ya on that.

I have 2 Furys, one from 1998 and the restyled one from 2001. Essentially the same but differ in the base hood shape and the handle nozzle. Also, the air path pre motor lint filters are in different locations.
I prefer the early one for it's less glamorous more mechanical appearance, although I do like the martian green accents on the 2001 model.

The early light lens is smaller but it throws more illumination.

The handle differences are evident in this view. I do like the long reach collapsing aluminum wand that stores inside the flexihose.

And yes, I would say the dust bin does contain most of the dust instead of distributing throughout the vacuum chambers like most Cyclonic baglesses do.

Side view.

The early Fury has molded rubber coating on the dust bin handle and the hose handle. Better grip.

Fantom...

Clayton, I'm in the same boat you are. We had a Fantom Thunder and a Fantom Fury at a restaurant I worked at in '98-99. They never really did all that great of a job. I was still enamored with them at the time since they were about the only bagless cleaner on the market back then.

But yeah.....I never thought they did that great. In late '99 the owners bought a Hoover Windtunnel and almost filled a bag the first time they used it. I think that must've said something to them because shortly after that the Fantom's disappeared and they got another Windtunnel!

Remember......the Fantom IS a Dyson relative....

yes I kno but I would like to kno why my fanton fury is not sucking up that good
I mean I checked the lint screen and the other orafaces of the machine for clogs but I have not gotten into the motor yet to look at it. I do kno for a fact that it is a good motor because it sounds great. but I am not aware of y it is doing a lousy job of vacuuming and lousy suction

butt

the fantom is better than a stupid dyson....My fantom thunder is an awsome cleaner and i wouldnt trade a thing in this world for it!

Yes Mike, the 1998 version is on the right. The lack of sexy curved handle gives it away. Frankly, the first open end handle grip offers the best dust path to the chamber with fewer sharp bends. I keep these two simply because of what they represent in how far bagless cyclonic technologies have come in bamboozling the market.

Btw, for those who don't know Fantom Furys, the first openended handle Model FY92 00 made in Canada IS the tool end of the telescoping wand. Simply pull the handle up and out and the hose follows. The angle makes it useful and that's why it is friction rubbercoated.

The later model 8FY-100A made in USA Fury the sexy handle is capped & fixed. Pushing on that green latch releases a straight telescopic wand & hose from below the handle.

Both these Fantoms are out in the garage awaiting a winter Spa appointment. I also have a Cyclone XT with the tool storage bin. It was bought new by a work colleague, she had two bins that clogged up, she stopped using it years ago. I fixed it up for here but now she's used it again she finds it too heavy and has given it to me...for the collection. I gave her a fully kitted Filter Queen 700 for her sons allergies and she does have a central vac system. She reports the FQ is her favorite and most effective allergy control around the house.

Maybe I should lend her one of those accursed Rainbows?

Eric...

Nice story! LOL! When I got my Fury Special Edition(there was nothing SPECIAL about it) I think it was $170? I remember opening it on Christmas day and using it alllll over the house and I was vacuuming the kitchen and the bin was ALMOST full and my brother said,"You better empty that! It's really full!!!" I was amazed seeing we have central vac. Then yet we had no pet hair so it was amazing. It just seemed to loos its "umph" over the years.

My Fantom Thunder is on it's way!

David,
Here is mine and the box it arrived in on Christmas morning. If think they are actually better than they were given credit. I like the dual lights, quiet motor and the gentle action on the carpet. To me it's one of those vacs that "LOOKS" easier to use than it was in reality. Just the opposite of my Kirby. I thought I would NEVER use the tools but after I once got on to it I used the tools for the Kirby all the time. The Fantom sort of started the whole bagless thing. I just do not like messing with all the dirt but it's fun to see a collector really love their favorite vac! It was a blastto get mine out and give her a spin too. I always wanteded one ot the Lighting Canisters.
