So,

Feeling good after finding the Eureka Golden Upright, I figured that I had time to hit one of my haunts in Westland before it closed at 9pm. They NEVER have any vacuum cleaners, but I figured what the hey....I'll stop, I was that close for it to not make sense to do so.

As I walked in I saw this over by the small applainces. I exhaled a Holy @#$% as I came up to it, to the dismayed look of a older lady peering over the things nearby. I apologised and looked it over..

Wow..I exclaimed only $14.99.

I diddn't even second guess it.

I do have some personal attachment to this very vacuum cleaner. I used to have a babysitter Tina jane who's mother sometimes watched us when Tina had college classes. Mrs. Jane or Linda had a big ol house on the outskirts of town, and had a blue Twin Fan TOL upright that Iused to see in her hall, where she kept it at all times.

She became, Linda our primary babysitter after a few months and grew fast to learn that I like vacuums. She would regularly let me sweep her house with the old Twin Fan, and then one day when I came over it was gone....

Linda noticed that "I" noticed that it was gone and said nothing. After school, she asked me how I did on a spelling test she helped me with and I told her I got an A-. She said well that sounds great, and I have a suprise for you for your hard work.

She marched me down the hall to the bedrooms, and flung open the closet door at the end of the hall. Guess what was inside...This VACUUM!!!!

She said I was hoping you did well as I wanted to suprise you with the new sweeper. The Twin Fan, that I noticed was gone, just had become a basement, or lower level vac. He son Johnny had his room down there, and he used to to clean up down there.

At any rate she hauled it out and I went to town on her house WHOLESALE cleaning everything, and using every attachment. After that every Thursday afternoon while the other kids played outside, I vacuumed the Jane's house for her without fail.

So this vacuum will be going nowhere. I can't believe how awesome it is after all these years. even the hose is perfect...

So here is the Sears BEST PowerMate 4.1

Very nice

Thats vintage 82-84, the last machine in that style Sears had. I had the same model a few years back, it was a fun machine!
Congrats!

Thats vintage 82-84....

Okay,

Good to know Jeff. I figured 1983, becasue that was the last time I probably got an A- on a spelling test, and Mrs. Jane started watching us full time in January of 1984. Just read a few posts to tell you that I need to brush up a bit on things spelling that is..

So you had one too? Nice...

Funny how it works isn't it the way these things show up when you aren't expecting it. The twingle.
How is the hose on the vacuum? any splits or anything? My older Kenmore canisters, the blue one, green one etc all have hoses in very good condition but the newer one, that replaced that one you just got there,, more rounded, the hose is awful, very thin and split terribly. We were just discussing that the other day when dave was here.

Chad,

That is another beautiful find. I too am very partial to this model my aunt used to have on of these and a butter yellow and white Eureka upright. I always favored the Kenmore canister when I got to vacuum at her house. It is great that you were able to find such a great vac that means so much

The twingle....

Yeah,

I was Twingling like nobody's buisness when I found it. It's been quite awhile since I found two nice things in one day.

Yes the hose is unsplit and unscathed as of now. Of course to preserve it, I slathered it in Armour All for plastics and vinyl and left it overnight in a plastic bag. The folowing day I wiped it down, and the vinyl was just as smooth and unbrittle as you could hope for.

Per a previous post to the Eureka just found in Florida, I always take my hoses off the machien when I'm finished and wrap them around the base, or coil it around the machine is some way to completly relieve the tension at the canister inlet and the wand. I've found that takes care of 99% of why hoses fail. No stress, no breakage..

It did seem funny that the hoses on the later PowerMates built by Panasonic not only had a larger circumference hose, but it seemed that the vinyl used was thinner and more brittle. I have seen VERY few of them that escaped their first life with their first owners undamaged in some form.

Again when you find these oldies you can usually tell those that were either loved by their previous owners, or were treated like 95% of the vacuum sold and thrown about mercifully during thier initial lifespan.

Sad to think that 95% of the machine we find were unloved :-((

A few requests....

Hi Everyone,

And thank you all who posted. As you can see by the pictures within, this canister is missing a floor and wall brush and a crevice tool.

These attachments are the earlier deep choclate brown color, and not the later grey, which for whatever reason is the only color I'm able to find thru all the stores, and others in my area.

My request is, if anyone may have a parts stash, and has a few spare moments to do so, please look to see if you have these attachments in that color. If so, would you be willing to part with them. I would gladly pay for them plus shipping.

This is not a "please can I have for free".

I realy would love to complete the ensemble, and hope that I can ask the vac communtiy to see what they may have to offer..if you wish to.

Thanks

Chad
