Complete ensembles...

Cheating here a little; the tools with the 160 are borrowed from the 150! But shhhh!

160 Close-up...

The tools for the 160 differ from the 150's, because they're made entirely of bakelite; not a combination of bakelite, duralumin and rubber. But the converter is the same, so they can be used interchangeable with both machines.

262 Close-up...

I got this cleaner, minus the bag and plug, on eBay for £5. When the former owners delivered it, they said 'We've got a box of tools for it in the car - we forgot to put them in the auction, but they're yours if you want them. If not, they're going in the bin!' You can guess my response...

The caddy and plug came separately off eBay, and the original bag was fitted to my Model 800 when I got that.

I wish I were able to get stuck into a project like you are! All that streamlining is a sight for sore eyes.

I'm sure the old gal feels right at home!

Love the 262

Hello Jack,

Great line up, on sunday I as using a friends 262 which is immaculate. I then vac'd the sofa with his mothers 1947 402. It even has its original bill from Lewis's in Birmingham...£13 gns.

A pretty efficient combo for that time I'm sure you'll agree ?

Regards, Walter.

Lovely lineup!

Very impressive machines Jack. Ive never seen a 960 - the hood looks immaculate!

Walter, nice to hear that a 402 is not only complete but actually in use! The only ones Ive seen have been minus hose and tools and in very bad nick.

Jon

What product might you be using to attain such a gleam on the helmets of your 150's ? Curious minds want to know!

What the differences are between the 160 and the commercial 960?

160 and 960: The Differences

Model 160 was made 1938-39 / 1946-49. I don't have the production figures for Model 160 to hand.

Model 960 was made January 1947 - July '48. In total, 21,941 Model 960s were made.

Model 960 differed from the 160 in several small details. Firstly, its finish was glossy grey enamel paint, not the wrinkle-finish paint that coated the 875, 160 and 262.

Secondly, like all the earlier commercial models, it had a bigger bag for filtering greater amounts of dirt from offices, hotels, clubs etc.

Lastly, the fan-chamber was lined with metal plates to prevent hard pieces of debris being shot through the fan chamber. 'Impossible!' you cry? It's happened on one of my 160s (I have 2, one not pictured above). I had to seal a 2-inch long gash in the side of the fan chamber!

There was a minor difference in the proportions of black and white paint on the reflector plate behind the lightbulb - the 960 having more white.

In other words, the differences were minor; finish, bag size, fan chamber. Were those deluxe features worth the extra money over the Standard 160? You'd have to ask the original buyer!

Wow, thx for the info! I'd love to have a 960 and a 925 to go with my 913, since I have a soft spot for the commercial Hoover machines. Then if only to find a 961 and 972!!!

Oh, me too!

I have the 912, 960, 925 and 900. I would LOVE to have a 972 and a 961 - they're two of my dream machines! I was lucky enough to actually vacuum with Tom Anderson's 961 during the VCCC convention week. The sheer size those cleaners is overwhelming, I'm 5ft10, and the handle came up to my chin!

As far as I can work out, Hoover's early American commercial machines went thus:

Model 18 - 1908-09
Models 197 / 101 - 1915-22
Model 961 (G.E.C motor) - 1922-26
Model 961 (Hoover motor) - 1926-28
Model 972 - 1928-31
Model 900 - 1931-33
Model 925 - 1933-36

I'd love one of these:

True indeed!

Did you know that Henry Dreyfuss also designed the Streamlined Locomotive. It had a protruding nose and gold striping on its sides, and was not all that dissimilar in styling to that of the Hoover Model 28.

Jack, thanks so much for sharing those great cleaners.
Enjoyed seeing them and the differences.
