I found this at the thrift store for $10 and it was worth it. I can't really put cleaner and water in the tank because it's so narrow, so I'll have to pour some on the ground on purpose then go over it with the Regina. Any Info on this machine, please let me know.

Regina

These were one of the most popular 2 brush shampoo/polishers.They were also labeled as Sears Kenmores. With proper accessories they could shampoo rugs/carpets as well as buff, polish & scrub hard floors.Yours seems to have the stiff bristle brushes for hard floors that should NEVER be used on carpet. These are often in good condition as they could have been used rarely for spring cleaning type jobs.

That looks like a groovy late-'60s model. Congrats on obtaining it!

I did some searching and found a 1966 brochure with what appears to be the model preceding yours going by the hood badge’s text & graphics and the tank’s decal. For fun I also attached a 1964 ad of a toy Regina vacuum.

Here's also a link to a current eBay listing for a users manual that looks like it is from the era of your model P1022P.

I’m unaware of any big-time Regina collectors on Vacuumland, so you may want to consider becoming one by forming a collection and researching models and years of production using old VL threads, online auctions, and local repair shops that have service manuals.

Regina Corporation History

From a column by Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson in the Tribune News Service Nov 10, 2015:

"The history of Regina began [at Leipzig, Germany] in 1889 when Gustav Brachausen, along with Paul Riessner, created the Polyphon Musikwerke . In 1892 they decided to branch out to the United States and established the Regina Music Box Company in Jersey City, New Jersey. Initially, they imported the boxes from Germany, but in about a year, they found they were so successful that they leased a building in Rahway, New Jersey, and within a few years they were manufacturing their Regina music boxes entirely in the U.S.

"Regina thrived in the music box business until the phonograph put them out of business (sort of) in 1922. In 1902 the company dropped the words “music box” from their name and began to diversify. They began to make … two-person pumpers … but they sold poorly.

"When the music boxes were no longer in demand, the vacuums continued to be made, but not in large numbers. In the 1930s, Regina introduced a canister vacuum, ... [beginning in 1952] they made [Electrik-Broom] stick models . In the 1980s, employees bought the company, but it was later acquired by [Electrolux Corporation in 1989, then] Philips Electronics in 1995, Oreck in 1997 and the Royal Corporation in 2000. Royal produced vacuums under the Home Depot label."

From Wikipedia:

In the '90s the Peanuts character Pig- Pen appeared in Regina commercials.

In 2020 Regina Vacuum LLC relaunched the Regina brand. (Its website unfortunately has no mention of the RC history or vintage products.)

Just two additional comments about the Regina company:

I think their Regina Housekeeper upright - though not a great performer - was the very first upright on the market to feature an on-board hose ready to use for above the floor cleaning. Not sure if a European company beat them to it on being the first, but for sure they were first in North America.

Secondly, the history of the company in Canada seems to be different from the history in the USA. I may be wrong, but we seem to have had Regina vacs that were not available in the USA - made at the Switson factory in Welland, Ontario.

First North American upright with an onboard hose

I believe that might have been the Sebo designed Windsor VersaMatic from 1979 or 1980. I’m sure someone here can correct me on the date.

Correction.

The model is actually P1022B not P1022P. Sorry I misread the model.

Hi Luxlife…..I think you are correct…that Windsor/Sebo 350 seems to have beat Regina to offering an onboard tool hose on an upright…very interesting. Like you said, it must have happened right at the very founding of the Sebo company in 1978.

We had one

My Mother had bought one when they bought the house to scrub the kitchen floor and she also used it with the carpet brushes to shampoo the carpeting with the Electrolux shampoo. It also could polish the floors. We donated it with all of its accessories to a Mission which has a thrift store. I was careful to bag up all the extra brushes and pads and tape the bag to the machine so as not to get separated so it could all be resold together. It was a 2 speed Regina. These were also always available for rent in the grocery stores near the checkouts I remember.

It was a good machine but not needed anymore as the asphalt/asbestos tile floors in the house had all been replaced with ceramic tile in the early 80s and most of the wall to wall carpeting replaced with hardwoods and fine rugs and therefore it hadn’t been used in likely 40 years but it did run.

It has turned into an appliance that while still good…is not of much use with modern no wax ceramic tile and polyurethaned no wax wood flooring.

Today

That machine and several variants can be purchased under the "Koblenz" name, as that company bought (or copied?) the molds and started making them under their own name in Mexico. The same Koblenz company (Thorne Electric) also makes a metal, fan-first upright similar to a Sanitaire.
