So, I've been trying to avoid thrift shops lately, so I won't buy any more junk, but like an alcoholic walking into a bar, I found myself in one yesterday and walked out with an Oreck Xl BB870AW handheld vacuum. Yeah, I know. I've been very good lately about NOT buying more vacuums, but this one's small and it only cost $5. And for that, I'd be picking up a white chip at Vacuholics Anonymous, if there really were such a fellowship.

I already had a black one like it but this one's white. It came with one wand and a floor tool, which is kind of odd since the black one came with one white wand and a crevice tool. I just need to find a dusting brush and an upholstery brush to have a complete set between the two, not that I'm really that worried about it.

Despite having been run without a bag or an after-filter (the bag chamber was full of crap, including Easter candy and what looked like an Alka-Seltzer tablet) the motor sounds fine and there's no tell-tale sounds of foreign objects rattling around inside. This is good, because I have no desire to take the thing apart, if I don't have to.

The only problem it had was a strong dog odor—odd because there was no dog hair in the (bagless) bag chamber. My quick-and dirty solution for that was to take the bag chamber cover off, turn the machine on, and spray scented disinfectant spray (Walmart's knock-off of Lysol) into the machine continuously for about 10-15 seconds, then let the machine continue to run for a minute or so. Now, there is no more odor.

I'm not sure why I bought this thing, other than I somehow felt like it needed rescuing. It's now sitting in my barn with other machines in deep storage.

" but like an alcoholic walking into a bar,"

Not to worry, I heard a counselor on the TV program "Intervention" say that an occasional relapse is considered part of the recovery process. So I've conveniently applied that logic to an occasionally weak moment of deciding on bringing another feral machine home! And I don't even have a barn, lol.

The only time I will buy a standalone canister is to bundle it with an upright Oreck once I sell it.
