I was going to clean some carpet with my Hoover Convertible model 706 for the first time in a while, and when I put the belt on, I believe I put it on backwards, and when I turned the vacuum on, the motor was running very slow and the brushroll was also going very slow. After I took the base plate off to see what had happened, I noticed that there was play in the motor shaft when there was none before. I believe I have(accidentally) damaged the bottom bearing, but I am not sure. What do you experts out there think?

I'd check your top bushing. I don't think putting the belt on backwards would have anything to do with your issue.

Update

A little while after posting this, I decided to try again with the belt. This time I put it on correctly. Upon turning it on, I was greeted with the nice Hoover Convertible sound and I ended up using the vacuum for 10 minutes without issue.

When you take the belt off, are you able to wiggle the shaft where the fan is? If that's the case, your motor needs to be serviced. Just because it sounds "good" doesn't mean it is in proper working order.
