You're off to a great start at collecting "Eurek-A-Data"! I copied some of my banter with eurekaprince (Brian) from the thread you began last December. Hopefully some of it will aid your research. There's more series models and types listed in the Sanitaire section of Hesco's website that will also be a benefit.

####################

I think Eureka called their famous 1960’s turquoise colour “Lagoon Blue”…I read that somewhere in an article about their Princess canister.

Hi, I'm glad to hear that you're composing a Eureka models & spec's timeline. It's hard to locate information on all the models. I've recently come across some model lists on vacuum parts websites, so thought I'd pass them on to you in case you need them or just want a cross-reference. Incidentally, the letters after the model numbers are the "Type"s as found on the manufacturer's labels. The lists may not be completely accurate, though; for example the 1475A had been omitted. There is also a photo of a 1910-1958 Eureka model and serial number list on another thread.

Eureka also made special edition F&G uprights for Kmart. These are easy to identify because they all had 3 digit model numbers. They were not rebranded with the Kmart name....they just had unique colours that could only be found in Kmart stores. If you search for "Eureka vacuum ads Kmart", you will see some of these models.

I wonder if Bissell has kept its vintage Eureka records?

Some bag packages also mention the 300 Series and Montgomery Wards 800 & 8000 Series.

Here is some information on hood styles and colors. I had wondered if Eureka named its colors like Hoover, and it did indeed. The data is from usavacuum.com. Wonder how many hood styles there were in the F & G series?

Regarding Eureka colours: the ubiquitous turquoise blue that Eureka used in the first half of the 1960’s was called “Lagoon Blue”….I learned this in an article exploring the design of the little Eureka Princess canister cleaner.

The gold used for the deluxe Rugulator 2062 and 2082 was called Queen Anne Gold.

Thanks for sharing!

I LOVE the Eurekas simply because they were never the obvious no-brainer choice in vacuums and they always had so much competition and fared well through it all. I also appreciate your thread because it’s so nice to see a pertinent subject thread at the top of the heap, instead of that other subject thread that we all tolerate oh so politely.

I hope that others have more to contribute because we’ll start over again tomorrow……

Out of curiosity

Out of curiosity, I saw a 600 series canister in a Kmart ad. Did the canisters fall under 1400, 1900, and 2000 series? And, why are there 1400 series, 1900 series AND 2000 series?

Wow!

Just…wow!

Well done Nick!

One Kmart special I can add: upright model 666 in beige and orange…DAN, no headlight. It came with a basic tool kit with chrome wand and hose handle, no second wand and no floor brush. The vintage print ad for this model is easy to find on the internet.

I think you can also add another feature: Edge Kleener (EK) which was just a pair of indented notches in the metal base plates of uprights and power nozzles to help clean up to baseboards. The difference between Rugulator upright 2082 and 2083 was the addition of Edge Kleener notches on the 2083, 2093, 2073 and 2043 uprights which came out a year after the 2082 and 2042 models.

For canisters, you can also add the onboard Tool Pak tool storage, or a separate Accessory Caddy. For instance the Empress One from 1965 had a separate tool caddy, but the 1800 Empress Two “Fast Vac” series had on board Tool Paks.

Also for canisters…not sure if you already did this, but in the 1950’s and 1960’s, some Eurekas came with a braided hose (BH) and others came with a rubber or plastic hose. It looks like Eureka went back and forth between the two kinds of canister hoses in both decades.

Nick,

Some other variables among models and model types that you may want to add to your data - either in a timeline or added to your model/type line item ...

Motor Ratings (A or W) to your data as sometimes it changed from one model type to another. For example, the 1945-A (omitted from the list above) has a 5.0 amp motor versus the 1945-B equipped with a 5.5 amp motor.

Bag materials (vinyl vented VV or solid VS, cloth C), colors, patterns, and such as the 1458-D with a white bag and vertical E/W logo (flying E) and text label (EWL) versus the 1458-E's blue bag with Eureka roman (straight) caps print (ERCP). The Eureka italics caps print (EICP) came in the mid- to late- 80s.

Toggle Switch (TS) or push button (PB)

Hoods - Vented (V) or Solid (S)

Cord Lengths

Metal or plastic handle

Brush roll types - eg. Disturbulator, Vibrant Groomer I or II

This is fun!!!

You can also add Eureka’s “Christian Klingspor” Signature Series of vacuums. Klingspor was a famous Swedish designer and parent company Electrolux SE from Sweden seemed to think that putting his name on some Eureka models would be a good thing to do. These were mostly hard bodied Bravo uprights from the early 1990’s, but there was even a CK edition of the compact Mighty Mite II canister. Not sure of the model numbers though.

I guess these could get the CK code? Calvin Klein? 😁

Another designation you could add is “place of manufacture”:

Bloomington, Illinois - BI
Detroit Michigan - DM
Juarez, Mexico - JM
Sweden - SW
Hungary - HU
China - CH
Japan - JP (I think the Emperor Upright was made by Panasonic in Japan)

Wow…forgot the Canadian-made Eurekas!!! These were made in Kitchener, Ontario so the code could be KO. Though the Eurekas made at the Onward Manufacturing plant in Kitchener had the identical model numbers as the ones made in Bloomington.

Agreed that it's fun, Brian! So many details to put together like a scrambled jigsaw puzzle!

Nick, Consider adding the polishers and shampooers when you finish with the vacuum cleaner model & type lists.

Some background on the term 'Vanguard' from Wikipedia:

The term originated from the medieval French avant-garde, i.e. "the advance guard". The vanguard would lead the line of march and would deploy first on the field of battle, either in front of the other wards or to the right if they deployed in line.

So E/W chose the model name 'Vanguard' in 1968 to signify it as a leader in cleaning technology and performance.

While Eureka didn't appear to delineate trim levels by name (except to indicate the top 2 cleaners in a line as "Adjustable", I recommend the following headings from the 2000 Series and forward. Here is a sample:

Budget - sans guidelight, 3.5A, 0 or 2 position D-A-N height adjustment, Disturbulator brush roll: 1430s

Basic - narrow guidelight, 4.0A or 4.8A, 4 position D-A-N height adjustment, VG brush roll: 1440s

Bonus - wide guidelight, 4.8A, 6 position D-A-N height adjustment, VG II brush roll: 1450s

Best - wide guidelight, 4.8A or 5.0A, 6 or 8 position D-A-N or multi-position Rugulator height adjuster: 1920s, 1960s

I like that! Can you post representative pictures? And, how should I handle the switch to plastic hoods? (Should I have a 2000 series-early sheet and a 2000 series-late sheet?)

Another upright model identifier: how do you turn on/off the power?

Toe Button = TB
Toe Toggle = TT
Finger Toggle One speed = FT1
Finger Toggle Two speed = FT2
Finger Toggle ESP = FTESP
Power Touch Handle with on/off bar in handle grip = PTH (model 2082 and 2083 Queen Anne Gold Vanguards)

Thanks. Believe it or not, I just developed a recent interest in Eureka cleaners due to a trash find that I am gradually restoring. Vacuumland threads,YouTube videos and Google searches have provided my information. So as I find time I'll go back and find some pic's and post them in this thread.

Good idea at listing the 2000s by hood material separately. You could do early and late or just metal and plastic (or whatever technical term Eureka used in its literature). Consistency with company terms is best to avoid confusion.

Regarding your query in Reply #4 about the 600 Series, yes, the Kmart editions would have paralleled the standard edition series to some degree, but I'm not sure how the model numbers corresponded. As your research continues more of these details and model/type categories will emerge. I found this out when I researched Electrolux USA post-Model 1205 cleaners over a period of 2 years.

You also inquired in Reply #4 about the relationships/details of the 1400, 1900, and 2000 Series. From what I have noticed, the 2000 Series gradually replaced the 200 Series beginning in 1968. Then, as new features were added, the 1400 Series was introduced around 1976 to delineate the trim levels--the 2000s being more fully-featured. The 1400 Series intro coincided with the use of vented hoods. The 1900 Series gradually succeeded the 1400 Series as numbering was depleted starting in the mid- to late-'80s.

In the past I had only a casual interest in vintage Eureka cleaners - in part due to the lack of online information about them. My free acquisition of one along with your data has sparked my interest; I'm sure your list will have a similar impact on other vintage Eureka DIYers, enthusiasts and collectors, too. Keep up the good work.

Another Category Consideration ...

Posted by Brian (eurekaprince) in another Vacuumland thread:

Bag "O" = Crown Princess with on-board hose storage
Bag "H" = Princess, Princess II, mini Roto Matic from the 1970's
Bag "M" = Empress
Bag "W" = Whisk hand vac (also will fit the GE version, I guess)
Bag "J" = 1950's Roto-Matic
Bag "B" = Sweet Sixteens (Model Series 1600), and Series 1200 Power Teams, "Ironsides", Quiet Kleen
Bag "C" = Mighty Mite (first version only - not Mighty Mite II or III)
Bag "S" = Empress II "Fast Vacs" (Model Series 1800 and Empress II Power Team (Series 1200), some earlier 1600's
Bag "E/R" = Hand Vac, Whisk, Quick-up
Bag "K" = 1950's and 1960's Super Roto-Matic
Bag "L" = Mobile-Aire, VibraBeat, Parnall Tenten in UK (Model 1000 series)
Bag "V" = 1980's Express Power Teams
The Famous "F & G" Bag! = all "fan-first," "bag-in-the-back" uprights including Dial-A-Naps, Rugulators, Vanguards, ESP's, 1900 Boss, Sanitaire Commercials, and "Automatics" and "Super Automatics" (Model Series 200, 2000, 2300, 1400 and 1900)
Bag "Z" = Ultra Upright
Bag "A" = never knew this existed! As discussed, a narrower version of "F & G" for all soft bag in the back uprights
Bag "P" = Emperor Upright made by Panasonic in Japan
Bag "D" = Series 100 Stick Vacs

BTW, that kewl, groovy 1960's ad for the Eureka Easy Glide on the other post is advertising another Panasonic machine made for Eureka and is basically Eureka's version of General Electric's lightweight electric carpet sweeper. The puny bag is in the base along with the small suction motor. I don't really know why they put a plastic Hoover Concept-like cover on the handle, unless is is just to hide the cord hooks.

Hope this helps the discussion!

Still would love to see proof that a Eureka "Prince" canister vac existed...anyone?

EP Brian

Hood Style Changes

Nick,

I'm not sure when the hood edges went from rounded to squared--maybe 1989?

One of the changes Brian had mentioned regarding differences between 'types' was styling changes. An example is your 1432-A with the rounded edges and the 1432-B with squared edges made in 1989. The Eureka wordmark also went from roman-style (straight) bold Helvetica on the 1432-A to the italic-style (slanted) on the 1432-B.

The 5130 ESP 6.7A cleaner is also a 1989 model with an updated hood style.

Yes I do! The model line up on one of the inside pages shows the Eureka Precision and Eureka Express….in that nifty dusty rose colour.

Another Eureka colour set: Harvest Gold (HG) and Burnt Orange (BO) used on the second generation Sweet Sixteens and first Power Teams….

Coincidentally enough, I just picked up a Eureka 1443 Typ. A at Goodwill this weekend. It was 40% Off $11.99 and I couldn't leave it sit there.

4.0 amps, burgundy or dark maroon color. No headlight. Metal hood. Brushroll is a mix of red rubber beater bars and bristles and is either painted wood or metal.

Whatever model this is, it only exists in text on Vacuumland. There is no other collectors with a photo of theirs on Vacuumland or videos on YouTube at all.

Very nice! The furniture bumper is obviously missing….wonder if someone has a Eureka spec sheet showing the original bumper. I imagine it would have been a burgundy red bumper.

I would date this to early/mid 1980’s according to the non-italicized brand name letters on the front Dial a Nap plate.

Oh and the bumper is there, its just very very thin. It's not wide like the older ( newer?) ones. It was actually pulled down and all I did was flip it back up. It's torn on both corners almost totally through so that's how it got all twisted up.

Oh...I see the bumper! Because this is a very low end basic model, the bumper is a very thin version. The more deluxe the model, the fancier and taller the bumper. Since it's only got two Dial a Nap settings, this is a very very basic budget model.

Ah I see, wow. Yeah I wonder if that's why this is rare? Either nobody bought it, or they all got used up and junked?

There was a Montgomery Ward shampooer paired with this in the store that I also bought, that is from 1978, and I wonder if both of these came from the same house and the person was a real money miser and just bought the bare minimum of everything - as they actually wrote the price of the shampooer on the manual - $38. It was a very cheap shampooer.

Also makes me wonder if these were from the same house, if the Eureka also came from Montgomery Wards too?

Doesn't the '9003' serial number leader indicate the third week of 1990 or March 1990?

I'm also guessing that the '4' of the 1400 Series indicates its 1974 debut. If so, the 1900 Series would have been introduced in 1989.

You might try getting some information from Eureka and local vacuum shops like I did with Aerus.

Keep up the good work on the model list. You're making progress!

Hi Paul,

I don't think Eureka's serial numbers worked like that...the font used for that model is definitely from early to mid 1980's. After around 1984 or 1985, the brandname lettering became slanted/italicized.

It is possible that the 1900 series began in 1979, if I remember correctly.

I might have a lead. I found this article however it is from 1978 but I can't view or enlarge it. It mentions an Eureka Model 1443, but with 6 pos. dial-A-nap and headlight, before the OCR devolves into gibberish. It is a store ad for a place called "Woolco".

@huskyvacs Good info. Regarding Woolco, here's a portion of what Wikipedia has posted:

"Woolco was an American-based discount retail chain. It was founded in 1962 in Columbus, Ohio, by the F. W. Woolworth Company. It was a full-line discount department store unlike the five-and-dime Woolworth stores which operated at the time ... "

I got a useful bit of information from a former Eureka (1978-2014) employee:

So, that's a little background. Now, to your questions. Model numbers were the main identification control, of course. But we would have run out of model numbers in no time if we hadn't used the model letter suffix, or "type", as it was labelled on the data plate, to indicate changes that affected servicing the machine. So, your 1428 might have been a 1428, type A. We might then have changed it to a type B if a part changed that was not interchangeable with mating parts. Or, I remember when we changed the handles from steel to ABS plastic we advanced the letter on models that were affected. Model numbers were indeed used to control which retailers got which models. We used higher specifications (amps, height control, type of bag, etc.) for department stores and vac shops (they were major players back then), and retailers like KMart, Catalog stores, etc. had different model numbers with different specs. There was no quality difference in how the models were manufactured. But specification differences in convenience features, filtration efficiency, design trim, and of course motor types. We private-labelled for Montgomery Ward and JC Penny, so they used their own model numbers.

As for serial numbers, I'd have to say I'm taking an educated guess. When I started with the company we bought pre-printed data plates so those most likely were grouped by model number. But eventually we produced our own plates, and then eventually produced them on each manufacturing line, as I recall. The serial numbers started with the week and year of manufacture. But the numbering system changed in later years, and I can't recall in what way. In general, a series of cleaner was built on a dedicated production line, so it is likely that you would have a long string of sequential numbers on the same series, but individual models might only have 500 or a 1000 run at a time before changing to a different model in that series. And then of course, the next week the numbers would start over with the new week.

Post# 468372 , Reply# 45   12/30/2023 at 13:45 by Paul (USA)

Very revealing - thanks!

I wonder if the person or someone else knows how the Eureka brand model numbers were selected, because the model numbers themselves don't seem to indicate trim differences albeit the Series does (2300 Continental Series, 600 Series, et cetera). Correspondingly, the model numbers do not appear to follow a numerical order.
