Eureka Shipping and Production History

2 noteworthy things: The GH-31 could be a G4-31. The ink was very hard to read. Also, for some reason there was no mention of the D171.

32 volt versions of at least the models 7, 8, and 9 were made. I am unsure if they continued this with other models.

Changes starting from the model 7:
The 7 had a very small motor, steel handle fork and unique latch assembly, side wheels, a clip on the base of the bag, a reversed power switch, and a friction connector on the bag.

The 8 used the same motor, but with a cast handle fork and a more modernized 1 piece latch. This model also had front wheels slightly tucked behind the head, but still had a friction fit bag connector. the on off switch was reversed, and it used a pot metal finger tab instead of a steel one.

The 9 had a latch on bag connector, something Eureka would have on all models until the D272. The bag would now have the clip on the top. It also had a small catch on the front of the handle fork. Earlier model 9s had a tall handle pole, but later ones had the handle pole shortened about 6 inches.

The model 10 was all new. It had a more beefy motor with a cooling fan, a stationary rear wheel with height adjuster, larger wheels bolted to the fan case, and a head that protruded more from the fan case.

The model 11 is much more common. It is the same as a model 10, but was made for a longer period of time, and has a quick disconnecting handle pole that unplugs the handle and the cord with one thumb screw.

The model F(standard #2) used the beefy motor of the models 10 and 11, but with a rear caster on the back. The head had grooves notched into it to help dislodge dirt, and it had a height adjuster on the front, similar to a model G. The handle is also the same as a model G.

The B(Special) is the same as the F, but with a reused front head from a model 9 Eureka. Some of them had their handles painted yellow to match the tag and the lettering on the bag. Sold as the Economy model.

The model D(eluxe) had a more rounded fan housing, an updated switch on the back of the handle, a full wooden handle grip, and a flat head that incorporated a spring loaded brush bar. It was the last cleaner to have sleeve bearings, as well as exposed terminals. This is the predecessor to the model K.

The model K had a cheaper style of cord disconnect, which strayed from the quick disconnecting handle back to a one piece fork, with a male and female plug system on the outside of the motor. This is the first Eureka to have ball bearings in the motor, and the first not to have terminals exposed on the motor. It also went back to having a simple wooden handle knob, instead of a full size wooden grip.

The Model G is the first Eureka to utilize a roller brush. Earlier models had a two speed switch on the bottom, as well as a full size wooden handle grip. Both of these features quickly went away. It is also the last cleaner to have the bag on the front. Some had the option of a headlight, and all of them had vulcanized rubber wheels.

The model G2 was the same as later model Gs, but with the bag on the side. Later models used a full metal belt spindle, instead of a smooth brass sleeve to ease belt wear as used on Gs and early G2s.

The G30 is the same as the G2, but with a sleek badge with a pinstriped cross logo. This logo was also featured on the very last G2s.

The G31 was the same as a G30, but painted dark brown with dark brown bumpers and wheels to match.

The R used a two speed motor, and had a molded headlight cap. Otherwise it is generally the same as a G. There were many slight changes and subsets of the R, many with extremely low production numbers. I cannot find much info on these, though there was a brown one, a painted silver Montgomery Wards one, as well as the polished version.

The M Had a very sleek frame, with a new centralized motor bolted inside the housing. It also had 2 casters, a height adjuster that showed the height level on a seperate wheel, and an updated badge. It also used a full size wooden handle grip. There was also a red version made(M-61 and 61A), as well as a very rare brown one, I am unsure which model number this one was.

The D171 and D272 only differed with their trim. They used the same motor as an M, but in a redesigned red painted frame with a bakelite hood. The bag outlet was also switched to the left side, with a newer, simpler connecting system.

If anyone knows anything about the subset cleaners not mentioned or the pre model 7 cleaners, please let me know.

Checkrate/Likes P.S. Your model list of spec's draws parallels to those of auto's. It seems that electric floor care companies such as Hoover and Eureka, mimicked auto manufacturers' trim packages by offering so many designs and options - especially since the Sixties. In turn, lettered model ID's and names resemble those of antique vehicles. However, since the floorcare cleaning companies haven't followed suit in publishing model spec's like the auto industry, details such as yours are valuable. Thanks again.

Checkrate/Likes A disclaimer. A lot of the info on models 1-5 I posted is based on observation and speculation. If you have concrete evidence on any of the machines, please post it. I just want the early history of Eureka vacuums to be as complete as possible.

Checkrate/Likes I think I found the differences and changes of models 1-5. I am unsure on the model 6, it was only made from January to April, roughly 10000 units so finding one will be near impossible. I assume it is much like the model 7. Model 1: No front wheels, clip on rear wheels. Has a large porcelain switch on the handle, cord plugs into the handle end. No chain or spring for the bag clip. Checkrate/Likes This poorly taken reversed photo is the only picture evidence I can find of a model 3. It has the hook for a bag chain so it had one at one point. The serial number in the title of the Worthpoint listing dates it to be a model 3. If someone has a model 3, I would love to see a pic. It can be seen that instead of having a blank space on the back of the motor for the clip on wheels, it features a spot for a bolted on caster(which has been removed). This model also has the ball socket handle hinge, and is the last one to have it. View Full Size

Checkrate/Likes Model 4: The first to have a real handle fork, it is very primitive and offers no method of stopping the handle upright. There is a way to lock it into one usage position if desired. There is no switch, it turns off when the handle plug is removed. This is the last model to feature a wood handle, and the last not to have cord hooks. Checkrate/Likes A lot of speculation on this one. This I believe to be a model 5. I cannot prove it for sure until I see one with the serial number in view, but it makes the most sense. Numerous patents updating the Eureka vacuum were filed in mid 1915, and the 5 came out in mid 1915. They streamlined the head, made it have the ability to fold down to access the hose port, and portrayed it with a metal, heavily curved handle. This model also shows the carried over single rear wheel(not caster) placed in the center of the motor, which was presumably carried over from the 4. The handle is shorter and more curved as well.
