What was the advantage of the box top style bag?

Eureka introduced its box-top dust bag on the very first Vanguard upright in about 1967 or 1968. Because this model was touted as having very good filtration, the box top provided more space at the top of the bag where the top-fill F&G bag had its filtration space. The top fill design was meant to send the dirty air flow up the paper tube to the top of the bag, where the dirt fell away from the air flow. The air then had plenty of space to be blown and filtered through the top of the paper bag and the top of the outer bag....reducing the chance of clogging.
