I bought a 1940s Royal and it has a clip on the electric cord that holds the loose cord and plug together while the cord is wrapped around the handle. I've never seen one of these before. Is it original or an aftermarket piece ? It appears to be original. I'm sure these were lost on most.

Many cleaners that used Belden plugs used that cord clip. Hoover had the molded-in cord clip under patent for years.

That's a beautiful 239 you have there! I think you're right, mid to late 40's is about right for that model. I have a few Royals from that era myself, models 189, 215, and 153, but have never seen a clip like that. Here's a pic of my model 153 and one of two 189 uprights and 157 hand vac. I call it "Ensemble in Red and Black."

Funny how I'm seeing more of those clips on machines nowadays due to it not being integrated into the plug. Specifically Dyson and Miele.

I recently learned that you can almost negate the need for a cord-clip, which prevents the flex from being an awkward length and swaying around as you transport or store your vacuum.

Take a standard Kirby flex for example; usually 30 feet?
If you just wind it around and around, in a large loop, using both hooks, you usually end up with a long trailing length. Too short for one more winding, yet too long to be tidy.

So instead of going round and round, start with two or three figure-eights. Then continue winding in round loops.

You'll need to judge whether you need one, two, or three figure-eights, depending on the length of your flex and the spacing between the hooks.

You'll finish with the plug over the top hook, with just an inch or two of flex to spare.

You'll soon remember which winding pattern to use, especially if it's your daily-driver.
