Thank you very much Dysonman1 for this information, very useful for me !! I am studying the subject and I still have a lot to learn ...I have a large collection of antique fans from the GE brand (GE pancake) and many antique Edison light bulbs (I want to share with you a very old photo from the early 1920s of a vacuum cleaner dealer in washington DC)

hello everyone !I may have found my happiness this morning !there is a royal vacuum listed on ebay but with a very high price ! I don't know its age, it looks in good condition, maybe some parts are missing from the handle the seller claims that it makes a little noise when starting (the motor probably needs a good cleaning) the seller just made me an offer with $ 200 off but only valid for 2 days ! what do you think of all this ? Can you advise me, maybe Tom Gasko who is surely the greatest specialist in old vacuum cleaners in the united states. thank you Romain

Welcome Romain!
That Royal is very, very overpriced. Most vacuums coming from California are nowadays. That is a mid to late 20s model. While there are currently no other Royals on eBay with that head style, there is a very early roller brush model that can ship to France, and is much cheaper. https://www.ebay.com/itm/353956198895QUE... |

I didn’t realize that both your second and your third picture were actually my machines. I was planning on selling this one at this year‘s vacuum cleaner collectors convention in September. It’s only problem is the handle does not separate in the middle. It is hollow and is used to hold the cord that runs to the motor. It also doubles as the cleaning wand while used with the hose. The machine would have to ship in two boxes.

Hello everyone ! I just received in the mail this morning these 2 advertising magazines (royal breezes) on the subject of royal brand appliances in cleveland I realize that they also made hair dryers and electric vibrators.the magazines are dated May and August 1924 -number four and number 1 volume 9 these brochures should be available from dealer and appear very regularly At that time ! @ Tom are you still willing to sell me a vacuum cleaner of this type ? if there is need to make 2 packages for shipping the engine part, electric wire and bag is not a problem for me you can send the engine part first . tell me if you agree and how much is the price of the vacuum cleaner I could go to the bank soon and prepare a money transfer.
Cordially Romain. |

It's also interesting that just 4 years after the Electric Shop picture was taken, the top-of-the-line Purifier became a separate brand, called Electro-Hygiene. Here is a pic of my model 80 Electro-Hygiene, which was my first restoration project and to my knowledge the first model of Electro-Hygiene. The second pic is an ebay pic of the attachment set that would have been sold with it, which I bought last year.

The main thing that set Electro-Hygiene apart from Royal was the deodorizing chamber, or as they called it, the sanitizing chamber. It is located in front of the fan case on the straight suction models such as this one and trimmed in red. Revolving brush models from 1955 until 1966 had a crystal chamber that snapped on in place of the belt cover, and in 1966 the model 880 was introduced that had a flip up headlight and the crystal chamber was then located below the headlight. The sanitizing crystals as they were called were basically paradichlorobenzine moth crystals with .4% formaldehyde added and according to the sales pitch, when they were used in the sanitizing crystal chamber it killed the germs in the air while you cleaned.
The other difference between the Electro-Hygiene and the Royal was the warranty. While Royal only had the manufacturer's warranty, Electro-Hygiene had a warranty similar to Kirby, that included lifetime rebuilds and fire insurance for the original owner. It's kind of interesting how Electro-Hygiene came to be, and how its early history is intermingled with that of Royal. When Philip A. Geier started the P.A. Geier Co. in 1905, it was a job order machine shop, and his main product was parts for punch presses. He built his first vacuum cleaner in 1910 and called it the Royal, and by 1912 devoted his full attention to vacuum cleaners. As the company grew, they added models, eventually building 3, which were the Standard, the Super (which may also have been called the Princess) and the Purifier. A young man named Arthur Frankenfeld began selling them, and had phenomenal success with the Purifier model, of which Philip Geier took notice. What was Frankenfeld's secret? He didn't just sell vacuum cleaners, but sold the customers on health, hygiene, and sanitation. In March of 1934 they decided to spin the Purifier off as a separate brand in itself and it became the Electro-Hygiene, a wholly owned subsidiary of the P.A. Geier Co., with Art Frankenfeld in charge of the division. In 1941 Electro-Hygiene incorporated, with their machines still made by P.A. Geier. I sold Electro-Hygiene in 1974, then again in 1976. I got to meet Art Frankenfeld at a sales convention in 1974, and he was every bit as charismatic at 67 as he was back when he sold the Purifiers! Jeff |

Thanks again Jeff! for all this valuable information ! I learned a lot today thanks to you !the glass bottle marked with a B in the store is an air freshener and disinfectant which is introduced on the base of the motor at the level of the suction chamber and then mixes with the dust before going into the dust bag ,this is a very innovative and early thing for 1929 there was nothing like that in europe at the same time !it is a great chance that you had to have met Art Frankenfeld in 1974 .
