Oh, no. Not again. That's right - Lady is back at it again with the white Vans. And by white Vans, I mean another vacuum find.
Dateline: 11 January 2022. 3:30 PM. I was feeling depressed because my housemate's car broke down, and I ordered a part and tried to fix it, but it was too cold to undo the bolts, so I was pretty bummed. My 20-year-old heap was the only working car we had(!). I also get bummed when I need to drive it in the winter because of the road salt. That, and it's an import, so I feel like I have a sort of duty of care for it, much like I do with these vacuums. So, I decided to give myself a little retail therapy at St Vincent De Paul's. Here's a photo of the vacuum selection they had. It's important to state that I also got the Shop-Vac, but it's too cold to do an outdoor photo session, and my housemate won't let it indoors until it gets washed out. I also went back for the Dirt Devil Broom Vac the following day - more on that in about a week.

My precious! They sold the loose box of accessories with the Classic, but they sold the closed box separately. Remember this. It will be important later. It was $84.35 for the Classic, the Shop-Vac and the extra accessories. I don't have any pictures of the receipt because I'm a dum-dum that didn't pocket it when I left. It still might be in the parking lot. Who knows?

Something for the elevator fans. I believe this is a Schindler model. You can see the box of accessories in the shopping cart. Note: Festival Foods is a statewide grocery store chain.

Here's the Classic III safe at home. Eighties couch. Eighties chair. Eighties rug. Eighties Nintendo. Eighties videocassettes. Seventies vacuum! I'm living more of a vintage life than I give myself credit.

View of the left side of the 2-CB. Kirby was keeping that art deco styling well into the '70s, it seems!

The underbelly of the beast. "Quality - Reliability - Performance." I would argue that not even Kirby themselves can claim that anymore. Does anyone have a working Avalair? We shall fight to the death!

The lean. I might have knocked over a few things posing it.

View of the headlight assembly. "Open if suction is too high." Yeah, let's make a vacuum that could rip the varnish off of the floor! I love it!

Headlight works! I don't know what Kirby makes their headlights out of, but I need a set for my truck.

View of the tag. As usual, it's a bit expensive for a thrift shop but cheaper than eBay.

Close-up of the accessory box. I know the basement isn't the best place for it, but I'm working with what I can!

Remember when I said the closed box of accessories they were selling would be significant? Here's why. It's all original. 22 October 1976. I can't make out if the salesman was named Pete Burns, Bars or Bales.

Accessorise your mind. My housemate cleaned all the attachments and labelled them to the best of her abilities using just the manual. There are probably some errors in there, but I don't know what we're doing anymore. There are also some duplicate accessories - I think the "rough" texture accessories are original to the vac? No idea.

Bonus picture: my Kirby family (the other vac is a 1980 3-CB) with my inspiration for collecting them. I hope you like this pic as I nearly fell on my bum going downstairs to get the tape to pose it. This house is low-key a deathtrap.
That's all for now. Stay tuned for next week where I still don't know what I'm doing!

I don't blame you for grabbing the Classic III and all those accessories. The [rice is actually in line with what fully kitted Kirbys go for at thrift shops around here. It looks to me as if you have the complete kit, plus a few extras. I picked up a Classic III last summer and did a Legend II bag conversion on it so I can use disposable bags. I'm not a big fan of dump bags. The nice part is it's fully reversible.
The Broomvac is an interesting little oddity. I understand they're kind of a rarity. I have a set of tools for one, which I can use with my Royal Prince handhelds but I've never actually seen A Broomvac in the flesh. Have fun with your toys... |
