As 2021 winds down its final hours, I'm reflecting on the year and have come to the realization that for me, it has been a crazy year for 'vacquisitions':

•In January, I started off the year acquiring a Sanitaire S645 blue series upright for $12 and fixing it up with parts on hand, other than buying a replacement cord.

•In March, I got a Kirby G7 Diamond Edition with a full set of accessories, including a carpet shampooer, at a thrift shop. It needed a deep cleaning and a few minor replacement parts. Then I turned around a couple of weeks later and bought a similarly well equipped, but much nicer, Sentria at a different thrift shop.

•In June, I got an Oreck XL uprignt for $2 at a thrift shop but turned around and donated it to my church's rummage sale, along with a couple of other machines I had tired of. Earlier in the year, I had let the quasi girlfriend take my Electrolux Discovery Plus.

•In July, I came across a Kirby G3 that needed extensive renovation, as well as a Eureka ESP upright a couple of weeks later. It took me several months to fix up the G3 because I could only work on it for short periods in the late summer heat.

•In August, I got a deal on shopgoodwill.com for a Kirby Classic III with a small assortment of accessories. And at some point, I also picked up a Royal Prince 501 handheld in its original box with all the paperwork and most of its accessories.

•I late October, I bought a Kirby Heritage 84 off of shopgoodwill.com and three days before it arrived, I acquired a Kirby G6 from a local thrift shop. At this point, I realized how out of control I had become and imposed a moratorium on any further vacuum purchases for the foreseeable future, which is not to say I haven't been tempted since then.

And of course, there has also been an assortment of parts, toolkits, power nozzles, etc. along the way; thus, my new year's resolution is to content myself with fixing up and playing with the toys I have, instead of acquiring anything else. Also, I will require myself to donate at least two machines to next year's church rummage sale. The hard part will be deciding which ones...

When I was compiling the list above, my mind flashed on the fact that the boxed Royal Prince 501 was missing its dusting brush and crevice tool and that I'd seen a spares of those tools, which I had kept when I donated one of my shop vacs earlier this year, down in my barn. I just went and retrieved them and compared them to the corresponding tools I had in a BroomVac tool set I'd gotten to go with my first 501 and except for the color of the plastic, more dove gray than white, they are identical and thus have found a home in that box. These are the sorts of little triumphs that will help me keep my vacuum moratorium going.
