The 2000's was a bizzare time for the vacuum cleaner market, partly due to the rise of bagless. Euro-Pro was a thing back then, responsible for Shark, Fantom, Infinity, and a few others. But I wanted to ask, does the Euro-Pro brand even exist anymore? I know Shark is still around, but the other brands apparently faded away into obscurity.

EuroPro is a company called SharkNinja now. They make the Shark vacuums and Ninja blenders.

I assume the name EuroPro talked about European Professional Equipment.

Yes Euro-Pro became Shark, then Shark became SharkNinja.

You can see all the company's various trademarks here:

Euro-Pro has an interesting history. It started out as a Canadian company based in Montreal. Their primary business was importing lightweight European sewing machines for the Canadian market.

Then they started marketing a little hand vacuum that looked like a little shark which became very popular. I think their third project was that cordless swivel carpet sweeper that was promoted heavily through infomercials. And they just grew from there. The owners eventually moved the company from Montreal to Boston...about an 8 hour drive away.

The only EuroPro items I ever owned are their high end steamer and their electric poop scooper that used small bags in a continuous roll. The steamer performs very well and has an electric trigger switch to release the steam instead of the mechanical type. Mine is at least 20 years old and I’ll sure miss it if anything ever breaks on it. Part are near impossible to find for this one.

The “electric scooper” was a joke. I gave it away.

Huskyvac, the Swivel Sweeper was marketed by Ontel, a company that made many different as seen on TV products. The Euro-Pro sweeper was marketed primarily as a Shark, they also sold it under the Fantom brand.

I assume they stopped using the Euro-Pro name and switched to Shark Ninja because of brand recognition; people recognized "Shark" (and eventually Ninja) more than Euro-Pro.

I attached a link to one of the Shark sweeper informercials. There are some nice clips supposedly recorded in the vacuum section of a store at one point, I spy a Bravo in the background along with some bottles of Oreck carpet cleaning solution.

That infomercial is so cool. It’s interesting that Mark Rosen shortened his name for the infomercial….his real family name is Rosenzweig.

It looks like the sewing machines are still being sold as Shark Euro-Pro.

Oooh, that Shark sweeper, I totally forgot about that. I always thought they made the Swivel Sweeper thing too.

Here’s a tv commercial advertising the little Shark hand vac that marked the beginning of Euro-Pro’s entry into the vacuum cleaner market. It’s from the year 2000. Canadian Tire is a nation-wide chain of hardware stores that used to focus on tires and other automotive supplies…over the decades, the chain has expanded to offer everything from housewares and vacuums to patio furniture and gardening supplies.
