I'm vintage 'lux all the way, but out of curiosity I'm thinking of buying a recent Aerus model to be my daily driver. I prefer to leave out failure-prone electronics. What models should I consider? I prize reliability over glitz and features.

I should mention that my daily driver is a Miele S5280 that I'm VERY happy with. I was very impressed with its low noise level right from the start.

Thanks,

Joel

This is like an old-school Lux model, but if you want the classic design definitely look into the Perfect C-130 canister. You'll save a few hundred dollars and from what I've heard the suction motor might be a little stronger than the Aerus "Classic" model. I've used a few Perfect models are they are high-quality. The cheapest way to get your hands on one new is on the re-labeled Clean Obsessed CO763. About $550 new.

At the same time, it's not a genuine Aerus, and it would be fun to have the real thing. I'm just a cheapskate lol

The Clean Obsessed C0888 is the Lux copy to get. Better than the Aerus classic in many ways. I've sold tons of them and have not had one single repair problem. Nationwide makes them for Desco. Nationwide also makes the new Aerus upright.

Is there a copy with a longer cord? I'm surprised they didn't make it a 25 or 30 ft cord.

Joel,

If you don't want electronics that could be problematic, skip the Lux Guardian Platinum. I think they've long since figured out the electrical problems they once had with that model, but no electronics will last forever.

The Lux Classic and Lux Legacy are basically the same machines and have basically no electronics.

The Lux Legacy is the more expensive of the two and has a taller top trim panel that can store tools, and the machine uses plastic snap-on wands and tools. The power nozzle also has a headlamp.

The Lux Classic is the cheaper of these and has a flat trim panel with no on-board tool storage. This machine uses metal friction wands like all of the vintage Electrolux vacs, so it's compatible with all tools prior to 1994 (or whenever the Renaissance came out with plastic wands).

Both machines will be very familiar to you if you own old Electrolux products, right down to the C-style bag. It's just a preference really of plastic wands vs steel wands.

Have you ever considered installing in a central vacuum? If I were to buy any Aerus machine today, the Centralux is what I would get.

I haven't used my Areus Platinum Guardian becuase of the board problems. Its an excellent vacuum-the board problems need to be sorted out.The Centralux is a BAGLESS machine-you may want to think about this one.Who wants to dump 6-8 gallons of dusty dirt????And the other indignity-clean the foam filter.Go with a bagged central vacuum instead. In fact the MD dealer here has replaced Centralux units with MD or Central Vacuum International bagged machines. The Centraluxes had blown motors from dirt dust leaking past or thru the foam filter.I have asked the Areus dealer here if they are going to come out with a bagged version of the Centralux. That would be an improvement.

Most reliable would be…

The Lux classic over the guardian or Legacy. The Guardian has electronics and the plastic wands which can be a little less reliable than the original style ion the classic. The Lux Legacy also does have a circuit board I believe for its lights on the top panel…they are triggered mostly by switches or the automatic control feature which is still mechanical. But reality is that small board with the lights could be a source of trouble and the Lux classic doesn’t have it. Also the Legacy has the plastic electric wands and they just aren’t as reliable as the original style which the Lux classic has. The Lux classic has two additional wands as well so if you have really high ceilings or a giant room one or more can be added to the power nozzle wand to make a really long wand. Also the classic uses a standard 1 1/4” wand so if you have other universal attachments you like from other brands they will work. You end up giving up the automatic control feature which shuts off the vac when the dirt in the bag causes reduced suction but for someone who is in tune with their vacuum, this feature isn’t really all that necessary, more just fun! It’s basically as close as a classic 1205 except without the automatic control. I would ask the sales rep to swap out the floor brush tool for the classic combination rug and floor tool to sweeten the deal and tell them you’ll buy it if they do that for no charge. Then it will be very nice, you can clean area rugs or fine delicate rugs with straight suction too.

Let us know what you get.

Admittedly the classic and legacy are noisier than the guardian or your Miele and that’s something I wish Aerus would improve upon for these models. They need more sound insulation.

Correction

Djub85 stated the lux classic has no onboard tool storage, this is incorrect. There is onboard tool storage for the combination dusting brush and short crevice tool via clips on the top vent cover. Certainly not as “deluxe” on the legacy with its drop in system, but more along the lines of the old 1205 with a clip, but there’s two of them back to back instead of one like the 1205.

The lux classic and lux legacy were originally based on the Canadian models and US Electrolux adopted it when they merged with the Canadian Electrolux. The basic 1453 canister (which replaced the model L in 1980) was scrapped in favor of this Lexan plastic bodied machine. The model L was a great seller…the 1453 not so much so it was discontinued during its run during the Diamond Jubilee era and the Canadian Lexan model was introduced in the US as the 2100 LE with automatic control or just LE without the automatic control. Aside from the a motor change and a few other small tweaks, the Lux classic has remained virtually unchanged from the LE from 1986…36 years! Sometimes when they’re onto a good thing they should stick with it and Aerus has done that with this model.

I’ve often debated if I was to buy a new Aerus the same question and while I continue to go around in circles with all models. It was sort of answered for me when I found a very lightly used Lux classic in my favorite color. Light powder blue with medium blue trim with all accessories and a combination rug and floor tool to boot one day at a habitat for humanity store for a whopping $22. I bought it and have since found out that it had been serviced by Aerus a few times, had a new hose purchased at one point as well. Everything matches despite some replaced parts per Aerus and it seems to have been a well maintained machine and the previous user almost never used the power nozzle as it has virtually no signs of use or wear…probably had hardwoods as the single sided floor brush shows the most wear of anything. It came with 47 genuine bags and based on the maintenance history the previous owner likely used only genuine bags. Hence my desire to get a more modern version is fulfilled.

Now, wirh that in mind…and my constant debate over whether I like the traditional wand system or the plastic wand system, I can make the Lux Legacy work with the traditional wand system and tools if Inlike simply by purchasing a Lux Classic hose. It will work with it just fine and then all my traditional 1 1/4 attachments will be usable.

You could see if the salesperson would sell you a Legacy with the classic hose and tools if you want the automatic control and the easier drop in onboard tool storage but still have the original wand and attachment system. If you get the right salesperson and they want a sale…they’ll likely sun out the parts you want so you are happy. After all, they could sell the opposing combination as an upgraded classic to someone at some point. I know the salesman who sold my Mom her model L back in the 70s said he would sell anyone whatever combination they wanted because he wanted his customers to be happy with the product and their budget…he was smart…those customers loved him and he became well known and loved in the entire county for his remarkable customer service. Unfortunately, he has passed away.

And…

You might even negotiate to have a tool caddy thrown in to sweeten the deal. There are Two types to choose from. The upright one which is a carry caddy and can house the tool from a Lux classic or the wall mount from the centralux which can house the tools from a Lux legacy or platinum ultra.

Another option you could consider if you wanted to stick with American, a Metrovac. The same company that's known for rebuilding older Electroluxs'. Take the Professional Evolution ADM4SNBF 2-speed model and combine it with the Perfect PPN1BBK battery-powered nozzle, it's still cheaper than buying the Lux Classic canister.

Aerus

The legacy does not have a circuit board in the machine. The only model they sell with a board is the platinum model canister vacuum and lite cordless. The wands are never a problem with the legacy models it's the neck at the power nozzle that goes after about 10 to 15 years but it's less than a 40 dollar repair. The classic and legacy have the same motor it just doesn't have the creature features of the legacy and does not come with a sidekick or barefloor tool with air flow vents. Now that being said alot of people who are just used to the old style hoses and handles always go with the classic model. It really just is a preference of what you like. Good luck.

I'd go for the classic

I would definitely go for the classic. The Legacy hose end is nonstandard and so is the electrical connection. Or as has been mentioned, you could get the Perfect clone or the clean obsessed version, I think they are the same other than the color. A very nice canister design that has been around for a long time and works well.
