Answer. For it being 1915 vacuum a 3 Amp motor was robust back then.

Very very cool. I forget who it was but one of the big time collectors on this site that has a museum has one, I remember seeing it in one of their pics. Just can;t remember which of them it was. But it was originally a bright blue, that one has got a lot of grime on it.

Not sure if it's worth nearly $400 in that condition but they are indeed extremely rare.

The pulley on the back of the motor would've been to power any device around the home. Imagine this being the only electric motor in the whole house.

This machine is on page 262 of Electric Cooking Cleaning and Heating in Service of the Home.

Thanks MadMan

Glad to see the pic....If the starting price comes way down and I win it, I would now be able to replicate the bag and wand...knowing how it should look makes me want it even more.
BTW - why are you "mad"...mad about vacuums ?

Can you imagine if a fleet of these Bissells went down with the Titanic? I could definitely picture these cleaning the staterooms (in First Class anyway).

@madman do I have permission to save your picture of this? I have a very early variation of this vacuum which is also my current oldest.
Thanks.

It's not his photo, its property of the publisher of that magazine.

Ahh yes, the grandfather of the NSS Pig. What a cool vac, I saw one made into a pig once.

That Bissel "Canister" vacuum so resembles an NSS M1 vacuum! In the early days of electricity motors were often sold as "appliances" to power things that were previously hand powered. This was common on farms-electric motors adn engines before tractors with PTOs became available-than the tractor could serve as a "motor" to power devices.

The pic I posted is from a book that's in the public domain.

@OhioVacs - Nothing to do with vacuums, I'm just a little insane in general.

From what I've heard, they were labelled to Bissell by the company that later became NSS. Bissell themselves only made one electric vacuum before the 50s or 60s, and it is so rare there is only one out there(an upright). I bet you could use modern NSS parts like the bag and bag support on that Bissell.

The one I have was given to me by NSS. The Bissell was no relation to the Bissell Carpet Sweeper Company. It was the first "NSS Pig". Very, very heavy motor unit. Surprisingly quiet.

Do you have a picture of this first Bissell? Only 1 left in existence is crazy! I've never heard of it.
