I picked up a near mint golden J off Facebook marketplace for $50. When I got it home, I plugged it in the motor spun right up to high speed like an electrolux should then all the sudden it slowed down then got very noisy and I could smell it burning. Is this a symptom of needing new brushes or does it just need lubrication or should I start looking for a new motor?

I would

check the easiest things first. Check the wiring to the on/off switch for scorching. Then of course check the carbon brushes and the bearings. Maybe one of the carbon brushes are hanging up in the holder and not making good contact with the armature. While you are in there see if the fans need blowing out.

Check the wiring that goes to and from the cord winder. Is everything making good contact down inside the winder? Check the condition of the armature and field windings for damage from overheating, change in appearance. See if you can detect a burnt smell anywhere on the machine. Hopefully it's something simple.

I personally think these are worth fixing or replacing the motors in if the rest of the cleaner is in pretty good shape. Good luck! Billy

Ok I'll try and take it apart tonight. Do they still make brushes and bearings for these motors

So it turns out the Armature is shot, and one of the brushes is rounded off the other looks ok. I found a guy on eBay selling NOS armature. Do I need the long or short armature? Also can someone direct me to a place that has brushes?

Does anyone know the difference between the 2 different length armature? I really want to try and order one.

I think…

The difference is the 1205{s and Golden Jubilee models have the shorter armature motors and the Super J, Olympia and Siverado’s have the longer armature motors. The Super J was named as such because of the bigger motor with more suction power. The entire body of the Super J is longer. The way you can tell which model you have is to look at the top cover of the back edge is sloped on a 45 degree angle then it’s the longer motor model, if it is more upright and smooth, it is the shorter motor model. If the top cover has the 50th anniversary logo sticker on it it likely is the shorter motor. Also the model number on the inside of the bag door will be 1205 even though it is a Golden Jubilee…1205 is the official model number for the Golden Jubilees with the same motor as the blue 1205’s.

Since you mention it is a Golden Jubilee, it would need the shorter armature but again, confirm the model number on the inside of the bag door. We had a pieced together Golden Jubilee with super J top on it that was too long for the unit at one time. It worked but that’s how I learned there were two different Gold models that were nearly identical to the untrained eye.

A super J, Olympia, or Silverado motor will not fit in a Golden Jubilee machine…it is too long.

I have a 1205 motor on my bench . . .

. . . and it measures 7" end-to-end. If your motor is that length, it requires the shorter armature. Not that there can be much doubt if your machine is indeed a 1205 - the longer motor will not fit it.
