I never noticed until I was reading the Dyson upright reviews on the Dyson UK site. A customer was bemoaning the demise of the Dyson cylinder cleaners.

I'm surprised to see that, I thought cylinders were more popular in the UK. I wonder if this means they will discontinue them in the US as their uprights and cordless vacuums seem much more common here than their canisters.

I've been wondering the reasons:

Too bulky for most folk?

Insipid suction power (based on the EU maximum motor wattage)?

Too expensive?

Or maybe they were just plain unusable?

I remember reading customer reviews last year, which said the floor head on the cylinders stuck fast to the carpets, balled and rolled up pet hair - but didn't actually suck it up!

Perhaps it was an exercise by Dyson to deliberately make the machines unusable, so that nobody would buy them, and thus they could discontinue them. It wouldn't surprise me in the least.

The Dyson uprights are proving to be awkward for some customers too: tools very awkward to use, cleaner head sticks fast to the carpet despite the slide control, handle-lock non-existent, plastic components breaking, noise levels, blockages, poor instructions, and a mains flex which is too rigid. The complaints are from folk who owned previous Dyson machines.

Not surprised at all. The cordless Dyson are infinitely better than their corded machines. Makes sense for them to focus on those rather than a product which has fallen out of favour with the general public.

James Dyson did say back in 2018 on the launch of the V10 that they would continue to sell the corded models but not put anymore money into R&D to develop new corded machines going forwards. I think they stopped selling the cylinder/canister models in the UK about a year or so ago! Uprights tend to be more popular in the UK! I would think as sales drop off on the corded machines they’ll stop selling them as it wouldn’t be cost effective to manufacture such a small quantity! Sales must of declined on the cylinder/canister models in the UK for them to be removed from sale! I’m sure the ball upright models will be removed in the near future too, especially as sales decline on them! Same for other Countries where Dyson are present the corded models will eventually go as they continue to develop and advance their cordless ranges with new core technologies such as the motor and battery technology Dyson have developed and continue to improve on! May be the start of the discontinuation of the cylinder/canister model is down to the fact Dyson’s new cordless machines outsell their corded machines 15 to 1! As mentioned by the man himself in his latest autobiography. So it would make sense as sales decline on the corded machines to stop manufacturing and selling them.

The general public seem to want and like these cordless machines (in general) as they are light and less bulky as bulk cleaning homes too is now for most a thing of the past and the move to more daily byte size cleans or clean as you go is more common to most busy lifestyles.

I know some don’t like cordless vacuum cleaners but it’s where Dyson is taking their future in this market! I’ve already predicted to some people that in the UK alone in the next 5 years or so 99% of the domestic market for vacuum cleaners will be cordless! As better battery and motor technology advances so will the development of cordless machine regardless of if we like it or not!

not surprising

I would not be surprised to see Dyson discontinue all of their corded cleaners at some point. They are clearly interested in the cordless market and that's where they are putting all of their resources.

Its nothing about a "surprise" Dyson categorically has said that that's exactly what they are doing; discontinuing there corded lineup to focus purely on cordless technology.

Based on how good my V15 is, I can totally see why.

The writing is on the wall for the uprights too. Why sell a corded machine when you can sell a cordless machine that will need to be replaced in a couple of years or at the very least the battery replaced frequently. Far more recurring revenue that way. I wouldn't doubt if they move to a subscription model next. A WiFi enabled vacuum that requires a monthly subscription fee.

I would think Dyson especially where they have markets that sell both uprights and cylinders/canisters they’ll drop the one that’s selling the least first. Like they have in the UK already! Markets where they only sell either upright or cylinders/canisters they’ll drop them once sales drop dramatically I would think! Eventually as we know they’ll all go! I would guess in the next 2 years or so globally they’ll stop selling their corded machines. More than likely it’ll coincide with the launch of their solid state battery technology no doubt which we could see making an appearance in their cordless machines over the next 2 years or so!

I'm still trying to afford corded models from over 10 years ago, so doesn't bother me really!
