On today's POD how did the "Time to Empty" indicator work on the Model 150? I remember seeing printed on most of the cloth bags, empty after each cleaning. This model actually told you to.

I asked our resident Hoover Expert, John Gregory, to explain how it worked. There was a red indicator that came into view on the right hand top rear side as you use the machine. There was a small hole in the bag mounting that mated with a hole in the bag connection on the machine. When enough pressure developed (back pressure) in the bag, it caused the red 'indicator' to come into view.

 Modern day vacs have a similar “valve” which has a spring in it…when the suction gets blocked by the filled bag the suction begins to build up enough pressure to pull the valve back against its spring that keeps it closed, this, depending on how it is designed, either shows a red part of the valve through a viewing window or triggers a light switch turning on a check bag light such as on Kenmore/Panasonic canisters. I like the feature and it is even incorporated on some bagless vacs with a green or red indicator, but often there is no printing near the indicator to tell a user to pay attention to it. And these indicators don’t stay in their red or on state when the vacs are off. I most prefer the automatic shut off style on Electrolux/Aerus machines. It not on,y triggers a light, but also shuts the machine off and on 1969-1997 models so equipped would also pop the bag door compartment open.

My personal favorite is the Electrolux LX which pops the bag door open, shuts the machine off, and completely ejects the bag from the machine! A rather fabulous occurrence!
