I have found the best thing to use on my Kirbys when polishing by hand is Mothers Aluminum polish - found in the automotive detailing section of most stores like Wal-Mart etc.. I tried Flitz, the 0000 grade steel wool, and it just didn't give it the sheen that mothers does. It takes ALOT of elbow grease and they don't look factory fresh, but in my opinion, it comes pretty close and is the next best thing! I have a BRILLIANT running little Heitage II that is next on my list to workover.. Tools I use.. Tub of warm/hot water - touch of disinfectant cleaner (Meyers is my fav!) PLENTY of old rags some for the polishing/application and the other, softer ones, for buffing. Old toothbrush for detailing screwdrivers to help lift and pry parts such as rubber trim and such... Tub of Mothers Aluminum Polish Old blanket to plop down on the floor with I have also heard alot of peope talk about using the Mr. Clean "MAgic Eraser" sponge to clean their rubber trim pieces with. I have bought one and am excited to see how that turns out. Plenty of episodes of The Golden Girls to listen to while I work :) I usually pick rainy days to do mine.. makes the day go by and let's just face it.. vacuum cleaners just make awesome toys to play with on rainy days!!! Once you get that sucker shined up, you will just want to sit and stare at it!!! |

Hi I recommend using mothers mag wheel polish with 00-steel wool this will really bring back your machines shine. Mothers is sold at most auto supply stores and walmart in the car polish section new2youvacuums. |

And have always been pleased with the results. I usually use terrycloth towels with it, and for the stubborn spots I break out the fine steel wool. And for rubber or plastic parts such as bumpers, handle grips, wheels, and attachments, I first clean with an Armour-All cleaning wipe and then use Brasso to bring up the shine. For painted parts such as the red crystal chamber on the old straight-suction Electro-Hygiene uprights I've had reasonable luck with Nu-Finish auto polish. Lou, thanks for the tip about the Bar-Keeper's Friend. I'll have to try that some time. And you and Cory are right. A freshly polished Kirby, Royal, or Electro-Hygiene is really beautiful to look at!! Jeff |
