John,

I hope what you saw is only an error. I came across a cord for a Kirby Tradition for over $900 (!), and I think that was also a typo.

Old scam...

Yeah, that's a perennial scam on eBay. I guess the sellers who do it are depending on the buyers to look at the price and not the shipping charge. And once you hit the 'Buy it Now' button, you're technically on the hook to complete the purchase. Unfortunately, the powers that be at eBay don't do much of anything to discourage the practice. To make the scam worse, eBay collects sales tax on not only the purchase price but the shipping charge as well.

It's why eBay hit sellers for fees on their shipping charges. The higher your shipping cost is, the more fees you pay. Sellers often never ship when they see the fees that will be taken out. You want your fees as low as possible.

Screws you on shipping. I've sold a number of of things you get the discount when buying label from them but they add on a bunch of fees. If they did lower fees for everyone it could build up like it used to be. They bought PayPal and recently sold. When they bought PayPal they jacked up all the fees. If anyone noticed Amazon went from selling books and CDs to the largest company in the world m. If they were smart model if like Amazon.
I was looking at a royal vacuum and 139.00 shipping. I know for a fact FedEx could ship it for $40.

Reminds me of those RCA cables on amazon that were like $5000. Of course, that's an algorithm screwup. Dunno about ebay, the seller probably put in the wrong info for the shipping, that's all.

I have passed on a number of items due to the fact that the shipping was more expensive then the item itself.

Not just ebay I recently wanted a couple of screws for a Kirby, about $2 but $15 shipping to the uk.
Some ebay sellers will inflate postage / price if they are low on stock so they can keep the item listed on ebay until more stock arrives.

It is very annoying. I'm not trying to say it hasn't gotten expensive to ship an item, but to pay $55 or more just on shipping for an item that costs $25 is just crazy to me.

I also have to say I think there is some intentional messing with the shipping costs. Because I will sometimes see two listings for the same item from the same seller. One listing will have the item more expensive but with cheaper shipping, whereas the other listing will have it the opposite. I think they do this to entice the buyer with a lower item cost, whereas others will scoff at high shipping charges, but be willing to pay more for the item.

USPS has increased dimensional rates for packages several times this year and last year. Vacuums I used to get for $40 delivered to me - those same ones now cost about $60. I can really only afford to buy from within 1 state in each direction of me anymore.

Also sellers do in fact manipulate their listings with fake shipping charges to make them appear higher up in search results, or to trick buyers that do not look before they purchase and end up buying a $5 item with $60 shipping charges.

There have also been times when in the search results, I see listings having free shipping, but when you go into the listing, it's a separate charge. I think this may be some kind of glitch on eBay's part, but it has happened to me a few times.

I've also noticed with the two listing sellers that one listing will have the item listed with free shipping (but higher buy it now price) whereas the other has it lower but with separated shipping cost.

I did try to buy an item recently, buy it now. As soon as I paid, the seller messaged me that the shipping cost would be $20 more than shown in the listing because of an error, and that they could not cover the cost. I was not very pleased and had them issue a refund.

They were a relatively new seller, and their feedback wasn't particularly great. Apparently they sold some printers that didn't work - I probably should have avoided it, but I really wanted the item. They have since relisted it with the higher cost, so I really think they were inexperienced and it was an honest mistake. I just didn't leave any feedback.
