Can anyone tell me what model this is? Some kind of weird slate gray color.

Thanks.

Brian,

I see you have what appears to be a Hoover 1000 series Convertible. But the floral print bag makes me think the hood may have been swapped out at one point.

Thank you. I thought about that, but the hood, bumper and handle grip are all exactly the same gray color.

You likely have an all original hoover .

Hmm...

Interesting that I find no information on a convertible of that color.

Really

You should check the model number. There not going to say grey convertible. I posted a while ago a complete model history of hoover for free on a web site. Look up model number.

Bag is not original to that model. The mod style yellow bag goes to the 1076.

Convertibles did come in gray but I think this predates the Convertible. It might be a Model 33 that was originally lavender and has faded to a gray color.

I cannot find any gray Hoovers of this era either, not even from collectors. I do not think gray was a popular color at the time.

Actually..

That bag is original contrary to what many are telling you.
That’s a “C” line cleaner, and a low end model at that.

There were two models outside of the 1076 that used that bag. One with the grey color scheme, and the other with a yellow color scheme, no headlight. Same hood shape as the 593.

This was the mid-late 70s when Hoover really started to offer short run promo models and became all fragmented to hell. So many different patterns of plaid, some box tops, the list goes on.

I’m sure another Hoover expert can chime in, but the model you have is 100% legitimate.

Sometimes, they would combine odd things,,at the end of a run into the beginning of another, to not waste product, if you will.

This came from the experts in North Canton, Ohio.

Interesting...

Thanks everyone. I figured it was all original the way the bumper, handle grip and hood are all exactly the same color and shade of gray. I have just never seen one before. It looks earlier than mid-70s to me though. I guess it’s a common model and I’ve ironically never spotted one?

From the one and only John Gregory..

The best resource for all things Hoover...

THIS IS DEFINITELY THE MYSTERIOUS U4017 OFTEN CONFUSED WITH THE U4035 FROM THE SAME SERIES .....IT WAS FROM 1972 AS A PROMOTIONAL MODEL IT WAS DONE IN CEYLON YELLOW HOOD AS MODEL U4035 FOR TRUE VALUE HARDWARE STORES.

And there you have it. The guy who knows all.

thats 100% original u4017. oddball promotional cleaner made from leftover parts from older production models. hood and bumpers were lefter stock from u4001 and bag from 1076 leftovers

And, final note,

Will, you are absolutely correct about all of that information.
Proof is everywhere. Although many are quite knowledgeable about Hoover, The Hoover Historical Center, filled with the genuine documents, is accessible to Tom A. who provided me w/ all of this, too. His locked metal files match the center's.
When I got my machine, Tom filled me in on the history of it , too.
An odd, but cute addition to any Hoover collector's collection. I'm very lucky to have the entire, complete Ceylon yellow line.

Thanks, Will.

Thank you

Thanks everyone. So, not really rare or desirable or low production then, just one of Hoover’s many oddballs. Is that right?

yep. Well............

gottahaveahoove's profile picture
rare as in it's an oddball, model transitioning model. I thought it was odd, strange, when I first saw it. You see the photo of my 1076 in this post. So, naturally, when I first saw the 'odd' model, I, too, THOUGHT it was incorrect.
But, then I saw one at Tom A's, and I bought one too. Then, I realized how it came to be.
A nice cleaner, but, it wouldn't be the first one I'd run in to save in a fire.

So...

So it’s not particularly desirable then, in comparison to say a 2
1076 or another convertible of the same vintage.

Thanks!!

I appreciate all of your help. One last inquiry though, am I correct that this machine would be no more desirable than a 1076 or another convertible from the same time frame? Or maybe even LESS rare or desirable because of the drab gray color?

Post# 442181 , Reply# 19   5/24/2021 at 20:42 (1,039 days old) by Jukeman71 (Arkansas )
Wow!!

What a beauty this thing is, I had no idea it would be this clean. Purrs like a kitten too. It was in a downstairs part of the house and it apparently did not see much use. The bag is even perfect on it.

And yes, it is the mysterious U4017. Thanks John Gregory.

Now if I could just find my Filter Queen 200 (hint, hint Tom G).

I'm getting one for you at the Vacuum Cleaner Collectors Convention in September. It won't be as nice as this Museum piece, but it is a model 200. I'll have to go unlock the files and get you an owners manual (I have more than 1). I am happy to SHARE with nice people.

hopefully, this week, I'll post

a pic of mine alongside my 1076.
There is also a similar thing Hoover did with the "goldtone" Deluxe Convertible and a stripped down version too.
I found them all the other day in a spare room.
