A friend gave me a Hoover Preferred vac. I have no idea how old it is, but assume it's fairly "new". Does anyone have any idea what year it was made ? It's a breathe easy, and it picks up dirt and hair like a champion. I can now part with the other vac that doesn't pick up much of anything except strange signals from outer space. : )

the first 4 digits of the serial number will be the month/year it was made.

Nice, man! Join the club!

I have a Hoover preferred breathe easy too! They are related to elites and sure get the dirt! The model number on mine is U9095-900 I believe, but I'm not sure.

Change that to:

U5095-930.

Let's see a picture of your new vac, too.

Wonderful

Thank you . My model # is 5095. I don't have a camera working right now, but mine is an unusual brownish color, and I am going to clean it shortly. I guess Murphy's soap is gentle enough ? I dilute it. Maybe I need a bulb ? Looks like mine has a headlight ? If so, I have to figure how to get the plastic hoochie off.

To get the hood off it you sort of have to get underneath it and pull on the edges where you see arrows molded into the plastic. My Preferred allso has that funky brown. Here's a recycled picture of it next to my friend's elite 350

What is the

Can someone tell me what the slit is for on the bag door cover of model U5095-930?

I thought mine was missing the "bag full" flag indicator but I guess not? I have seen other pics of this model and it looks the same as mine.

I have been looking everywhere for one of these. My grandma had one when I was a kid and I loved it and have been trying to find one for a while.

IMHO---

This was "Hoover's" last attempt at manufacturing anything that was "somewhat" decent. At best I would say they are a crude machine insomuch as some of the plastic components are cheap. The motors are loud and rough sounding, and the hood cover can be a challenge to remove for a bulb change or a belt change. Two of the tabs on mine were broken off when I got it but the hood stays on tightly regardless.

What's odd is that the paper bag compartment is very slim given the size of the "A" bag. Suction is pretty strong with the hose and the cord is nice and long. Overall, there is something about these machines I like yet there is something about them that I don't like. This machine definitely needs a cloth HEPA bag for today's standards as it would without a doubt greatly improve the efficiency of the machine. It would have been nice if Hoover made a better quality motor which could have made for a quieter machine and thus given it a feel of quality. The ones I have found were not used that much or very hard and cleaned up nicely and easily, though I don't know the average life span of these motors with regular and cared-for use.

If you are interested, if I find another one of this type I will let you know. Just let me know which model name/type you are interested in. These machines are getting old. The date code on mine is 0797 which means it's from 1997 making it 23.5 years old and so I am not sure how plentiful they are.

I think the slot in the bag door was just there because they used the same door for models with the bag full flap as well as those that didn't.

It's still her daily driver. But, yes, they are loud.

Hey James!

I surely will let you know it I find one and yes, John, they are a little loud but not a piercing kinda loud. In other words, it's tolerable while using it.

James, does it have to be that EXACT model? Sometimes I find them in other colors as I think this model could have been made. And, like many manufacturers including Hoover, all of these machines are really the same-just a different color scheme and outer shell appearance. I always thought the Hoover "Elites" with the better stretch hose were indication of a better model over the ones that had the ordinary crush-proof hose. The hose on the Preferred is a nice quality stretch hose for sure and maybe, just maybe the motor may be more of the refined version, as well since it's not so screechy!

Inside the bag door, on the other side of the slit, there is a circle. I understood this to be where you would put an air freshener disc.

I love late 80s and Early to late 90s vacuums and their commercials, they give me V A P O R W A V E nostalgia.
