Hello to everyone. I rejoined the group back in November after an absence of a couple years or so. There were many things going on at the time. I will be posting every now and then when I can. I would like to inquire about some Royal vacuums. I purchased a Royal model 801 and model 903 last year. I like the fact that the handle plugs into the motor unit. One of the machines the cord/plug is gray and the other is maroon. I have also seen them in 2 shades of blue, red and white. Was there ever a Royal made with the trim and cord in black?

Edward,

Welcome back!

Yes, there were certain Royals made with black trim. Most of the early ones up to the mid-1950s were (models 153, 189, 215, etc.).

I also had a 1988 Stark Deluxe 5000NA (same as Royal 889, but with no attachments) with black trim and gray Scafitex bag.

I agree with Ben, that most of the Royals and other brands made by Royal up to the mid 50's had black trim, including the bumper, handle grip, and bag clamp. Cords were black and made by Belden. I have a model 153, 189, and 215 that are good examples of this, and have black handles, red & black bags and adjust-o-rite covers as well. And my straight suction Electro-Hygiene models 80, 94, 230, and 2-230 all have black trim and cords.

My older Royal vacs, that you both mentioned, are part of my collection. These are the two recent purchases that I mentioned.

Royal Model 8300

The Royal Model 8300 is done in black trim with black bag. It is one of the newest models which, sadly, aren't produced anymore.

I'm thinking that your 903 might actually be an Electro-Hygiene with a Royal replacement bag on it. Depending on how old it is, the original bag would either been a red vinyl zipper bag with silverish grey printing, or a beige vinyl zipper bag with red printing, and the wording on either one would have been "Supreme Electro-Hygiene." I have a few 903's myself, one of which is one of the "drivers" at our house. They were the current Electro-Hygiene upright model when I was selling them in 1974.

The model 903 was listed as a commercial machine and sadly it did not have the original bag. The bag was a replacement and I replaced that one with what you see in the picture.

Edward,

Going by the size of the front wheels, your 903 is at least a 1976 model, but the smaller rear wheels suggest a pre-1985 build.

If your machine has a 3 amp motor, it will have been built between 1976-1980.

If your machine has a 4.5 amp motor, it will have been built between 1980-1985.

Furthermore, if this machine has a manufacture date of at least April 1982, it will originally have had a beige outer bag with the words "SUPREME ELECTRO-HYGIENE" as Jeff just pointed out.

8300 Everlast

As another user pointed out the model 8300 Everlast was done in an all black motif but it was not manufactured in the US unfortunately.
