So I had given my quasi-girlfriend my Hoover Quik Broom Supreme a little more than a year ago and she just called to say it had 'shattered' and was 'un-repairable' so she wanted to "borrow" another vacuum. Of course, we all know what that means. But sucker that I am, I offered her my least favorite Electrolux—the Discovery Plus. I never warmed to its onboard tool storage and it's just been sitting in my barn since 2016 but I just hate the idea of subjecting it to the abusive treatment to which she will likely subject it. If I could have convinced her to go for a canister, I would have given her my even more disliked Filter Queen but she was insistent on an upright. Whatever. This is the last vacuum I send her way. She breaks this one and she's on her own. She can just go to Wally World get hersef a piece of plasticrap. I may be a sucker but I don't like being taken advantage of.

There are givers, and there are takers. It's better to be a giver Edgar, trust me.

Honestly you should keep some plasticrap around for just such occasions. I do.

I agree with MadMan

I have a couple "loaners" that I don't care if they are returned. When they come over to borrow and say thank you, I say oh thank you, which kind of sets the tone. Funny because none have come back! Accepting gifts and favors from others is easier for me knowing that I'm a giver too!

I also typically have a disposable, normally cheap bagless , often a Bissell around. it's usually just a blockage or a belt and they're sitting out by the dumpster or on the sidewalk easy fix for my dirt four neighbors who move in to the apartments.Currently I don't have any throwaway machines so maybe I'm done with that or maybe it's just time for another piece of crap with an easy fix to turn up. I don't have any right now that I would give away easily. But even those freebie junk machines, considering the income in this area they are normally thrilled to have it.

Yeah, I've had a few of those in the past and that Hoover she got and just destroyed was my last one. I'd never thought about intentionally keeping a plasticrap vac or two on hand for such an eventuality but it makes good sense.

Perhaps the disco will last!

Being particularly indestructible since they are Lexan...I think the discovery will last her abuse! I will say the quick brooms were breakable. My Mom had one...we had to replace the top motor casing and the plastic top piece that the handle fits into. And Mom is not an abuser. I think Hoover’s plastic just isn’t all that good frankly and with age and it getting warm and cooling repeatedly from motor heat...makes the plastic that much more brittle.

That Electrolux discovery is a very good upright so if she doesn’t suck up water with it, she should generally be good to go.

I do though...know how you feel. I reconditioned my partners Mom’s Bissell lift off pet for his niece to use only to find it fully packed with flirt, filters clogged, and so much hair on the brush roll that the bristles were not visible! I got her a second vac and same thing and she complained it would shut off...it has an overheat switch which turns it off if it gets too hot. It was getting hot because the filters were clogged and it’s equipped with a filter indicator. I told her she must clean the filters when she turns it on and the indicator is red or it will overheat and stop. The vacuum has disappeared! I suspect she may have given it to her sister who moved into an apartment recently. I picked up a Dyson dc07 that needed a new hose, got the hose and a nice set of attachments for it for her...haven’t seen it’s condition lately. All of these vacs I’ve given her haven’t been anything I was interested in but a bit of maintenance will save these people money on having to buy new ones. And this is a crowd who really can’t afford to buy a new vacuum every year or two or whenever they move as they are scraping to get by and often fail to realize how much moving costs and are then wanting to borrow money!

Hopefully your friend will at least clean the brushroll and change the bag periodically!

Jon

The Quik Broom

Was it a later clean air, or one of the late 1980s direct air Regina copies? Those are super easy to break, especially the fan.

The Quik Broom was a Regina copy with the cloth bellows at the top. I agree it was no great loss but one thing I observed was her chronic laxness in emptying the dirt cup. And she wondered why it smelled hot when she ran it. This is why I do not have a good feeling about sending the Discovery over there. It does have the bag full indicator but it remains to be seen whether she pays attention to it. I'm definitely going to keep my eye out for a plasticrap vac to replace the Electrolux before she has much of a chance to destroy it.

I think I've made another Electrolux convert...

So now that the quasi girlfriend has had the Discovery Plus in her possession for a few weeks, she is singing its praises as the most powerful vacuum cleaner she has ever used. However, she does agree that the onboard tool storage is an awkward design at best but it does make it convenient for keeping things together when not in use. It's funny, my former house cleaner said nearly the same thing about the Discovery II, onboard tools notwithstanding. She was just in love with the thing.

This behaviour sounds like grounds for a break-up.

Vacuums are a prized possession for you and this bxxxh has treated one of yours this way?

Do you know for a fact that the other one was damaged?  Did she give you the parts?  She could have sold it.

She probably still has it and is "testing you" to see how much b.s. she can get away with.

Are you up for that?

And, what kind of behaviour problems does she have that a vacuum would be "shattered"?

It's certainly not something I desire to be around.

(sigh) But then the heterosexuals......do some weird things.

Everyone—gay, straight or otherwise—is capable of doing things that others find strange but I don't go around judging whole groups of people on the behavior of a single individual. 'Nuff said on that subject.

What she did was to bang the nozzle against the floor in a misguided attempt to dislodge a clog. Why she didn't just reach in with her hand is beyond me. But be that as it may, I had gifted her the vacuum outright so it was hers to do with as she wished. I didn't see the shattered remains and it doesn't matter. I had detached myself from any outcome with that machine.

I learned my lesson about that a few years ago when I loaned a previous girlfriend a Kirby Heritage, which she abandoned at her old apartment after she moved out when I had specifically request that she return it to me whenever she was done with it. She and I haven't spoken in quite some time but I have forgiven her nonetheless. I choose not to allow that incident to have any further power over me.

I chose to let her use my least favorite Electrolux upright, which had literally not seen the light of day in almost five years. And as I said, if she abuses and destroys that one, she's on her own for a replacement, although I would request the remains be returned so I could have it for spare parts as I have three other similar machines for which it could serve as a parts donor. But beyond that, my own sanity is best served by remaining detached from the outcome.

Hoover Quik Broom

Most of these Hoover Quik Brooms seem to have 3 things wrong with them as we find them or get them in for service. The dirt cup seal is always shot as the original was made of a foam like material that dries up. Power it up and dirt will shoot out from the seal area and the dirt cup will be loose. The second issue is the blind sided plastic fan that is a ticking time bomb. After time and use it will strip out and dangle on the end of the motor shaft. An easy way to tell is a high winding shrill motor and no suction. The third is worn motor sleeve bearings on both the fan end and cooling end. A noisy clackity motor usually means worn bearings. A good way to tell how much use one of these had is the wear in the nozzle. Some are so bad they flip flop back and forth when all it should do is turn from side to side.
