Joe, you have done a great job on those Kirby's. What do you use to polish them? |

First I want to say thank you to you all for your compliments. Seems like the more restoration work I do on these vacuums the more I enjoy it. And in clarification, only the Kirby Classic, the Royal Commercial, and the Hoover Sprayer are new arrivals. I got my Grandma's Connie when my Mother moved from her house to an apartment almost 10 years ago, my neighbor gave me the Kirby 512 last May, and Norm Brown gave me the D-50 last September (Thanks again, Norm!), when he moved from his house to an apartment. Sorry the pics of the D-50 were a little dark, they were the last ones I took that day and the sun was starting to set. Michael, thank you for the compliment and the birthday wish, but trust me, my D-50 doesn't hold a candle to yours!! Looking forward to seeing you again at the Convention! Charles and Terry, yes, that was hand polishing. I used Mother's Mag with terry cloth towels and occasionally a little VERY FINE steel wool ONLY WHEN NEEDED for the stubborn spots. Rob and Alan, glad you enjoyed the Connie photos and story. It's interesting too, that back when Grandpa bought the Connie for Grandma, there wasn't as big of a price difference between Hoovers and Kirbys as there is now, and the Hoover salesman came to the house to show it to them! And Rob, it was great meeting you in February, hope to see you again at the Convention! Jim, Thank You again for the Commercial Royal. As I've already been working on it, it will look a bit different next time you see it. Norm, Thanks again for the D-50. Notonly did I enjoy restoring it, but it seems the whole family enjoys using it!! Lena seldom uses her 886 Royal anymore, she either grabs the D-50 or the Electro-Hygiene 903. I'm pretty sure the grip on the 512 is original, it matches the bumpers on the light and the nozzle. And yes, you WILL get to try out the 82--that's the one you will be using in your display!! And again, THANKS everyone, for your compliments. You've made my day!! Jeff |

Actually, I DID buy my wife a model 886 Royal for our Anniversary 14 years ago. Traded in a 518 Kirby that was pretty well worn out. She really appreciated it, as the Kirby was in such bad shape that she would rather vacuum the carpet on her hands & knees with a Dirt Devil than use the Kirby! But now, since I've been collecting, seems she'd rather use my D-50 or my 903 Electro-Hygiene than the Royal! And Michael, I agree, if both work outside the home, they should share the chores equally but if only one works the other should take care of the home. However, even though my wife doesn't work outside the home, I still help out anyway. Jeff |
