Picked this Hoover 543 up recently off FB Marketplace for $20. The brushes were totally shot and there were two holes in the bag down by the bag nuts. After gluing patches on the inside of the bag,a new cord, brushes, and belt, and a big cosmetic cleaning, works great! There was remnants of the brown paint on the top, but it has faded and chipped away so much it just looked grey, so I sanded off the visible parts.I wouldn't have been able to sew decent looking patches on due to where the holes are, they would have been ripped out as soon as I stood it up while it was on. Its not like I am going to be using this much anyways. The handle is quite odd, it has a foot switch but installed is a metal handle with no hole for a switch in it. Was this original, or replaced when it was rebuilt in 1945?

There is a hairline crack in the corner of the housing, I may have to fix with JB Weld at some point. I also made a new axle for one of the wheels, as it was so rusted it wouldn't let the wheel turn. The end nut is a hair too small for the bolt and very tight so it acts as a good cap for the wheel.

It is weirdly quiet, especially compared to my model 300. I would love to get some more older Hoovers like this.
