What kind of bulb does a Hoover 300 take? Would a 500 series Kirby bulb work? Thanks!

A Kirby bulb or Okuno bulb will work great! It will actually draw a little less and be easier on the wiring.

Kirby's bulbs are/were sylvania bulbs.
