Went on eBay to pick up a few miscellaneous parts for my Sanitronic VII rebuild (a recent acquisition) and noticed that in my "Recommended for You" which is full of either miscellaneous vacuum & small appliance parts, or more recently, Ford PowerStroke-related stuff, since I have been doing some mods to my '15 F350 in my spare time) I saw a listing for a Sanitaire commercial vac. It had the obviously older rounded hood. Low and behold, it's old enough that according to the data plate, it was made by the Eureka-Williams Company. It has a 3.35 (?) amp motor, from what I could make out of the picture. The base is cast aluminum, which in my opinion Sanitaire should have never gotten rid of. The red aluminum base is battered a bit but I plan on sanding, primering and repainting the base and possibly the hood if the scratches are significant.

The brushroll, per the listing, needs to be replaced. I guess it's warped or something. Shortly after ordering, it came to my realization that the brushroll takes square end caps rather than hex end caps on older, metal base Eurekas, which upon a quick search doesn't seem to be available. So, I'm wondering...is it possible to switch out the end caps of a newer Sanitaire brushroll for the square ones? Or am I up a creek without a paddle? I typically replace the brushroll in any acquisition anyway, since it's very hard to properly clean and sanitize them and I like having a fresh, clean brushroll.

The bag seems newer since it doesn't match the wear a cloth bag typically takes on as it ages. I'll be checking the carbon brushes and will be crossing my fingers that this machine's motor bearings are in good shape. Not sure if I feel too comfortable trying to coax a lower bearing out of the bakelite motor base.

On to the Hoover Convertible 1010...a buddy of mine's great aunt is downsizing and moving into a 55+ apartment community. In her garage was this Hoover Convertible 1010. It has a few scratches but it looks to be in great condition, including its vinyl bag. The bottom baseplate is actually shiny, quite a contrast from the dull baseplates of my U4004 and JCPenney convertible. This looks like it will just be cleaned and sanitized, and get its scratches buffed out.

So now, in the course of a month, I've acquired FOUR vacuums, after about a year's hiatus. My wife is only aware of the Sanitronic, and that's because I was in the garage working on it when the garage door went up and she pulled in unexpectedly (she forgot some things she needed to take back to Target). This "hiatus" thing has been on hold for a year with collecting vintage PCs, small appliances, etc. Our house has plenty of room to hide all of my collection away -- and then some -- but my wife gives me the evil eye when I bring something home, lol.

My husband has a strict rule. One comes in - one goes out. I have 29 machines plus the installed central vacuum at home. The 29 live in a spare bedroom as well as the spare bedroom's closet for the really very old ones (Yes, I still use a 1921 Hoover regularly to clean with).

Congratulations on the Sanitaire. It will be a fun project. There are vac shops with those old style brush rolls still in stock.

Apparently the Hoover needs nothing which is wonderful.

Always Exciting...

One of the really great things about having been divorced for a very long time is the knowledge and awareness that I absolutely do not have to answer to anybody except myself for anything I do in my home—provided, of course, that it is legal. In fact, part of the reason that I am divorced is that my ex-wife wanted to dictate every aspect of my life and, in effect, try to turn me into someone I am not. NO amount of sex is worth that.

That said, I always get excited when I acquire a new machine. However, the extent of that excitement often depends on what the machine is and how much additional work (and expense) it needs.

If you find an older style brush roll, it might be worthwhile to buy a couple so you'll have a spare down the line. Also, the brush rolls I have for my Sanitaire SC686 have rubber ends that are five-sided with one pointed end and the opposite one flat. For my machine, I needed to press them in with the pointed end facing into the machine. Perhaps you could install a newer brush roll 'backward' with the pointed end facing the sole plate. And those ends pull right off, so if nothing else, you might be able to swap your older style ends onto it.

Cheers!

@dysonman -- I'm pretty sure that my wife is at the "no more" stage, lol. I think I'm going to stop acquiring for a while but I do know that I won't be saying no if I come across something like an early 500 series or Model C Kirby, especially if it's in good shape and/or near original. The good thing is that our house has plenty of space to hide my collection away -- most of them are under the stairs in a closet, others are in a walk in closet in my office (all but one of the three bedrooms have huge walk in closets).

@human - I can experiment with the brush rolls in my other Sanitaires to see if so can swap the end capss. Failing that, I'll try a vacuum shop, just when we're not on lockdown anymore.

I am at 20 something, about half living in my duplex The other half in the carpeted garage space. That really is plenty for me to get around and fall over and keep in rotation so they don't dry out etc but every time I decide I don't need any more some show up! Typically that's followed by somebody else needing one shortly after so I try not to worry. I have the same issue with mixers one will show up that I don't need and then somebody wants one seems to work out. Good luck with the brush roll

The Hoover 1010 is all finished. I had the day off and my wife didn't so I finished it and the Sanitaire System_Pro to its right. No more pieces sitting in several Sterilite boxes and totes under my workbench, lol.

The motor unit of the Kirby SVII is finished, save for a final polish, just waiting on trim and wheels -- the bag is in the wash to get what little (if any) dirt remains after several soak/rinse/drip-dry "cycles". The handle and emptor are still in my garage, and the cord is soaking in some Simple Green.

By the time the Sanitaire 641 shows up, the SVII should be done. As soon as I get the 641, the handle, cord and base are getting washed (the bag separately), and I'll be sanding/primering and painting the base with red engine paint.

Pictured here are most of my collection, pulled out of my office's closet -- the JCPenney Hoover Convertible, Royal 884, Hoover 4008 and my wife's Animal 2 (the only vac she will use) are in the downstairs closet. I think the Sanitaire 641 should be it for a while, unless I come across an old, early 5xx or (probably unlikely) a C model Kirby.

The Hoover Convertible in the front is identical to one I grew up with. It got passed down to me in the late '80s and I kept it for about ten years before it got purged when I was moving. I wasn't really into vacuum cleaners back then so I didn't even think about keeping it and restoring it. Oh well, I've replaced it many times over with other machines.

human, I am the same way. I like having my mind free to do what I want without worrying about someone else judging me or snubbing the joy of my hobby out.

I have a bunch of vacuums too and I never took a count of what I have yet as I have been overwhelmed with other things, so maybe that is the easier answer, to not know to begin with. lol I do know I have a couple boxes in the garage with hand vacs in them and an entire room downstairs full of uprights parked bumper to bumper waiting their due diligence and a full resto to museum condition as they should be. But as for knowing a specific and exact number, no clue!

My only rule is to not be too "samey" with my collection. If I see a vac in danger I do save it no matter what or if it's one I had when I was a kid. But as far as specifically seeking out vacs I try and always get one that is unique, a failure, had a lot of drama around its release that cancelled its sales, or has a cool feature(s) to me that make it unique. But I generally tend to not get too many of the same type of vac or same vacuum types (i.e. Orecks, Hoover Convertibles, etc). I do kind of break that rule a bit if I see a good deal (like $18 for a brand new Windtunnel on eBay even though I have 3 of them already of various series)

Very nice. I bet someone here will have a badge for that Hoover, if not can probably find one on eBay at some point.
