My husband has a strict rule. One comes in - one goes out. I have 29 machines plus the installed central vacuum at home. The 29 live in a spare bedroom as well as the spare bedroom's closet for the really very old ones (Yes, I still use a 1921 Hoover regularly to clean with).
Congratulations on the Sanitaire. It will be a fun project. There are vac shops with those old style brush rolls still in stock. Apparently the Hoover needs nothing which is wonderful. |

One of the really great things about having been divorced for a very long time is the knowledge and awareness that I absolutely do not have to answer to anybody except myself for anything I do in my home—provided, of course, that it is legal. In fact, part of the reason that I am divorced is that my ex-wife wanted to dictate every aspect of my life and, in effect, try to turn me into someone I am not. NO amount of sex is worth that.
That said, I always get excited when I acquire a new machine. However, the extent of that excitement often depends on what the machine is and how much additional work (and expense) it needs. If you find an older style brush roll, it might be worthwhile to buy a couple so you'll have a spare down the line. Also, the brush rolls I have for my Sanitaire SC686 have rubber ends that are five-sided with one pointed end and the opposite one flat. For my machine, I needed to press them in with the pointed end facing into the machine. Perhaps you could install a newer brush roll 'backward' with the pointed end facing the sole plate. And those ends pull right off, so if nothing else, you might be able to swap your older style ends onto it. Cheers! |

I am at 20 something, about half living in my duplex The other half in the carpeted garage space. That really is plenty for me to get around and fall over and keep in rotation so they don't dry out etc but every time I decide I don't need any more some show up! Typically that's followed by somebody else needing one shortly after so I try not to worry. I have the same issue with mixers one will show up that I don't need and then somebody wants one seems to work out. Good luck with the brush roll

The Hoover Convertible in the front is identical to one I grew up with. It got passed down to me in the late '80s and I kept it for about ten years before it got purged when I was moving. I wasn't really into vacuum cleaners back then so I didn't even think about keeping it and restoring it. Oh well, I've replaced it many times over with other machines.

human, I am the same way. I like having my mind free to do what I want without worrying about someone else judging me or snubbing the joy of my hobby out.
I have a bunch of vacuums too and I never took a count of what I have yet as I have been overwhelmed with other things, so maybe that is the easier answer, to not know to begin with. lol I do know I have a couple boxes in the garage with hand vacs in them and an entire room downstairs full of uprights parked bumper to bumper waiting their due diligence and a full resto to museum condition as they should be. But as for knowing a specific and exact number, no clue! My only rule is to not be too "samey" with my collection. If I see a vac in danger I do save it no matter what or if it's one I had when I was a kid. But as far as specifically seeking out vacs I try and always get one that is unique, a failure, had a lot of drama around its release that cancelled its sales, or has a cool feature(s) to me that make it unique. But I generally tend to not get too many of the same type of vac or same vacuum types (i.e. Orecks, Hoover Convertibles, etc). I do kind of break that rule a bit if I see a good deal (like $18 for a brand new Windtunnel on eBay even though I have 3 of them already of various series) |
