Hi everyone!

I'd like to buy a vacuum for my 74-year-old Mom. Right now she has a Bissell Cleanview Swivel Pet Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner. It's fine, but it's not great. It's really cumbersome, doesn't get under the furniture, bizarrely squeeks and she finds it to be too heavy so she simply won't use it for more than a few passes on her wall-to-wall carpet. I mean, she's literally turning it on for about one minute, vacuuming three strokes and turning it off. I'm happy to do the vacuuming, but I hate this thing too!!

She has three non-shedding dogs that do track stuff in on their paws. Dog hair is not really an issue though.

I'm totally open to suggestions. I don't care if it's bagless. I'd love to buy something that is super high powered, and maybe a canister so it's easy to move around/use. She needs corner, edge, and furniture attachments, so those would be necessary too.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

My grandma has a Windtunnel Air that she really likes. It’s just the right size for her and it’s lightweight. They clean pretty well too, it would probably would be better than that Bissell. An Oreck would be a good choice too.

Yeah, I'd say a swivel steering type vacuum, there are various makers that have these in bagged or bagless. Easier to maneuver and get under the furniture.

Overall if she wants attachments that are more useable, a canister might be better but will likely cost more.

Maybe something along the canister line. It's a lot lighter to push over carpets and maybe easier to pull that push. Depending on budget. Aerus Electrolux USA Classic or a Aerus Electrolux USA upright with attachments.

I have a wind tunnel air and it may not be the perfect vacuum but it cleans pretty well it doesn't weigh that much it's easy to handle and has a nice long cord, it was also on sale for $75 on Amazon my vote is for that

If you get swivel steering on the vacuum would be helpful. I'd dare say a cordless vacuum would be of great benefit. She wouldn't have to unplug and move the cord around.
The shark navigator cordless is under $100 and does a nice job.
I'm sticking with shark and perhaps the new duo clean vertex cordless. I seen it in Amazon for $325 it's $349 currently.
If you get a cordless hand vacuum perhaps for the furniture.
You could consider a eureka/sanitaire mighty Mite with a floor tool could be a potential answer. It's powerful and even with extensions it has plenty of suction.

I'd recommend for elderies a lightweight bagged upright with a compact lightweight bagged canister such as a Riccar Supralite with a Supraquik, a Oreck Elevate with a BB1200DB, or a Soniclean SFC-7000 with a Soniclean handheld canister vacuum.

I recommend a lightweight Oreck Command upright for carpets and a compact Miele C2 canister for everything else. You can add a convenient cordless Swiffer Vac for quick and easy daily cleaning of bare floors. All of these vacs are powerful and effective and really easy for a senior to use!!! Good luck!!! 😊

I'd second the suggestion of a canister since there would be much less weight to support. That said, my mother is almost 85 and several years ago, her doctor told her not to vacuum anymore because her back couldn't take the strain so she just lets the housekeepers where she lives do it every other week.

Try the Bissell Zing Bagged Machine

Try the Bissell ZING bagged canister vacuum. It features a lightweight design, variable speed motor for added suction control, telescopic handle and cord winder.
Look for it on Bissell's website direct. It's about $59. Others on fleebay are trying to sell it for much, much more! It's a great machine.

Or, look into the Eureka Mighty Mite-the yellow version which also sells for about $69 and with even free shipping.

Both are very good choices.

My Mom is 83 ....

And has arthritis in her hands and still finds using her Aerus/Electrolux’s a pleasure to use. In fact she likes that she can still thoroughly clean the carpeted stairs via the sidekick mini power nozzle. Also she likes that she has the option to not use the big power nozzle on the carpet every time she vacuums by using the combination rug and floor tool for an even lighter weight option if she’s in the mood for an easier option that day. Both the power nozzle and the combination straight suction rug and floor tool easily go under furniture. It uses simple nice quality attachments and the Lux Classic version is simple and not too cumbersome and light weight. The power nozzle even seems to pull itself along. The power nozzle is self adjusting for height automatically on every stroke so no knobs or pedals or dials to fuss with and changing the bag is simple and easy and self seals automatically when you open the door and all you do is take it out, no harnesses to fit it in or undo it from or anything like that and so you never see, touch, or breathe any dirt and the bag chambers on these usually stay nice and clean because of this good design. The canister is light weight and long and narrow so easier and ergonomic to pull along. I’d negotiate with the salesman to swap the basic floor brush tool to the flip over combination rug and floor tool so if your Mom doesn’t want to use the power nozzle on the carpets she can use this tool for an even lighter weight straight suction option on carpets that also in licks, flips over and snaps back on for hard floor cleaning on the bristle side. Though with pets, the power nozzle is best. The Lux Classic comes with accessory wands that can remain set up with the floor brush or combination rug and floor tool attached to the end so changing from the power nozzle to the straight suction floor tool can be done right at the at the handle, and no bending down is needed. This way the power wand stays assembled with the power nozzle and the plastic extra wands stay assembled with the floor tool. (But can also be disassembled and reconfigured for use in a variety of ways to suit ones needs)

The combination dusting brush upholstery tool is 2 in one and very nice. Add a sidekick powered mini power nozzle as an excellent solution for dog hair on furniture and an easy way to vacuum carpeted stairs and clean out the car, mattresses, or any tight areas. The combination dusting brush upholstery tool contours even for furniture edges or round chair or sofa arms. Both this tool and the crevice tool have storage clips on top of the canister so they can be with you at any time. The power nozzle can be shut off via a switch on it to use on hard floors in a jiffy if one doesn’t want to switch to the floor brush tool.

The Lux Legacy is more upgraded with a plastic electric wand system and a more swiveling power nozzle neck. There aren’t extra wands so changing to the floor tool means you’ll have to bend over, though so that’s a drawback. There is a full bag auto shutoff on this model and it’s sensitivity has an adjustment dial on the top of the canister so the shut off point can be tweaked to ones needs in case it shuts off too soon before the bag is full or doesn’t shut off soon enough. The Power nozzle is lighted on this model and the hose handle has a switch to shut off the power nozzle to use it on hard floors if one doesn’t want to switch to the floor brush, the hose handle is much larger and could be bulky to use though but it has a loop style handle that some might prefer over the standard handle of the Lux Classic model. Tool storage for this model is a little easier with contoured storage spots to drop the dusting brush and crevice tool into though this model requires an adapter tool to use the combination dusting brush/upholstery tool which also stores with it but is sometimes annoying to people to have to use s adapter. But the adapter also allows use of other standard 1 1/4” vacuum tools from other brands if a favorite tool from a pn other vacuum is desired. The sidekick mini electric power nozzle is included in this model but an option on the classic model. Crevice tool is longer on this model but it is short on the classic model but a longer one is available for the classic model.

The Aerus Lux platinum is the top of the line canister and very quiet. Filtration is first rate and vac is sealed, it can change motor speeds either automatically or manually to adjust suction. The flip over combination rug and floor tool is included on this model. Hose handle is a little sleeker but still just uses plastic electric wands so changing to the floor brush means bending down. It is quite expensive as the top of the line machine but has all the bells and whistles but also with the electronics in it, could be more prone to issues but it does have a 15 year warranty.

Personally I’d go with your Mom to an Aerus store. These machines last a long, long time. The plastic is high quality Lexan so very hard to break or crack. Get something you both will like as likely it will outlast your Mom's vacuuming days and then perhaps you’ll inherit it. This has happenned in our family...several of these Aerus/Electrolux’s have been passed down through the generations after our loved one have passed on. They have good service as well on these machines so getting them repaired if needed ever shouldn’t be an issue. Replacing the power nozzle brush every 5 years or so will renew the self propelling feature created by the bristles. Over time the bristles wear and become more flexible reducing the sensation of it pulling itself forward.

My favorite is the Lux Classic except for the fact that there is no sidekick included and just the standard floor brush instead of the combination rug and floor tool. Hence my suggestion is to negotiate for those to be included to make for a nice full featured very flexible machine. The handle is ergonomic and simple to hold and use and not too big, on the Lux Legacy and Lux Platinum models it is bigger and more clumsy as it has a loop to hold it by like a gas pump handle and that tends to make it bulky but it’s also one’s personal preference so they make both types still as some prefer the original style of the Lux Classic handle and attachments,

All models of the canisters have the retractable cordwinders built in and after filtration filters as well. Charcoal in bag chamber odor filters are available as well to take away pet odors. After Filters get replaced periodically and don’t need washing like those on bagless vacuums. The Aerus filter bag is just that, a bag and a filter all in one..change the bag and suction is restored to perfect, no filters to wash like in a bagless machine.

Since weight seems to be an issue here, I would not recommend their upgrights, though they have a lite model that may be of interest but it doesn’t seem to be as versatile with tools that you are looking for.

Miele also makes a nice canister and they are quiet. Power nozzle models are available as well, some of the power nozzles though are battery powered and otHers are fully electric. My Aunt and Uncle went from an Aerus/Electrolux to the Miele and were pleased. I haven’t much experience with the Miele but have generally heard good things. Service is usually done at a general vacuum cleaner store.

All of the models I mention use traditional bags.

You can review the vacuums on aerusvacuums.com and also locate a branch closest to you.

You can even call the store and have them come out to your Mom's house for an in home demonstration or test out the different models. They take trade ins so they may give you a decent discount for that Bissell neither of you care for which may be as much as you paid for it give or take some.

After using so many other vacuums, I just keep coming back to my Aerus/Electrolux...I just can’t beat it for ease of use over any canister or upright. The only thing close I’ve found is a Shark rocket stick vac. They are nice and easy to use and flexible, but won’t last as long. Power nozzle works great and attachments are nice and options to expand are available. People with shedding pets find the dust bin too small and requires repeated emptying as it’s by the handle. Also, some reviews by older people find the main head heavy as the motor and dust bin are all right at the handle adding bulk and weight there and it has to be stood against a wall to remain upright as it will not stand by itself since it’s top heavy, I have one I use for quick clean ups or when I just feel like using something different. Mom thought it would be bothersome for her hands with that weight there as I showed it to her as an option to consider and she said her Aerus/Electrolux is still the easiest to use to her because the handle is comfortable, it’s not hard to push at all or pull along, she can do the stairs and furniture easily with the sidekick, and she can get in, under and around all the furniture quite easily. She has models most similar to the Lux Classic but has the sidekick and the combination flip over rug and floor tool instead of the one sided floor brush tool. She uses both of these “extras” every time she cleans as do I as I have them in my mine as well. The combination rug and floor tool used to be standard on all models but in the mid 80’s they began making the single sided floor brush tools and only including the combination tool on the top models but it is available for all models. And in your case, I recommend it.

Jon

I had the zing, paid $38? I felt I overpaid and really didn't care for it. Gave it away pretty quickly

I too tried a zimg

And I agree, it was cheap and I returned it. The filters would clog fast cutting off suction. Though my purpose for it was to clean up daily remodel projects for customers in their homes and it was really annoying to have to deal with repeatedly having to clean the filters daily, especially when they would clog before I could finish cleaning. Replaced it with an old Electrolux canister with bags, never looked back, was the right move, it seals in all the nasty dirt and the multi layer bags don’t clog up. Plus I don’t believe the zing has a power nozzle so not so good for carpet,
