Good luck selling it. $122 shipping cost for me, pretty steep.

A vacuum that weighs 15lbs I could ship to New York under $40. The vacuum is in okay condition. The model plate and a few other issues. They don't sale bags for this vacuum.
With what I mentioned should help you realize it's priced too high and overcharging shipping.

Chrome's pitted, bag's MIA, model plate's corroded, wheels are torn up. When selling a vintage item like this, condition is everything. Good luck selling it at that exorbitant price.

thanks bunches! need shipping insight

thanks for the insights

i have what appears to be a non-oem bag and figured it would annoy the heck out of the aficionados so i left it out of the listing. problem solved.

the “make offer” option renders the “buy it now” price moot. ergo, it is impossible for it to be priced too high when prospective buyers can do the cpt. kirk priceline thing and name their own price. makes sense??
it makes sense to me but i’ve learned “the art of the deal”

let’s try to not let what we cannot do interfere with what we can do. makes sense??

i entered the minimum package dimensions with the machine fully assembled. ebay’s calculator came up with the shipping cost not me. makes sense??

a simple solution to the shipping expense would be for the prospective buyer with stronger shipping acumen than i to generate the $40 37”x 14”x 14” @ 15-16 pounds (assuming protective packing materials would be desirable) transcontinental shipping label and email it to me. i will gladly affix it to the package. make sense??

again, let’s try to not let what we cannot do interfere with what we can do. makes sense??

the alternative would be to chuck it into the trash and have one less working AV-1 in the world... pitted chrome and corroded plate non-oem bag and all.

would it be prudent to disassemble the unit to reduce the “dimensional weight” or would doing so create more wah wah???
adding photo with bag to this reply

hey huskyvacs: lesinutah has the formula for <$40 shipping !

Les, please share the formula for the two time zone/transcontinental/ marina del rey to myrtle beach shipping for less than $40. we’re counting on you to keep this AV-1 off of the scrap heap.

" we're counting on you"

to make sense... makes sense?

If you are looking to sell something here than your best bet would be to disassemble the machine, box it up, calculate shipping and then take care of the figures or the SENSICAL thing to do would be to box up the machine and charge the buyer shipping based on their location that way shipping doesn't seem so high... MAKES SENSE!

A couple of things you might not realize is that these people are looking to point a couple of things out that might aid you in a sale. we really don't care if you sell it or toss it in a heap. Its your machine, do as you wish, but a word from someone with common sense and plenty of it... It would be a wise option to watch what you say and think about how it will sound to other members here as there are a lot who cannot comprehend an attitude based on the words they are reading.

Good luck with your sale and/or have fun scrapping out your GE.

A bag is an improvement.

When your asking price is high, most prospective buyers will not even make an offer because they think you want too much. The asking price is a gauge for how much to offer.

Yes, definitely remove the handle for shipping. Makes it easier to pack and less likely to be damaged.

I'd suggest finding someone locally in Los Angeles that will pay that much for it really. Out in the Midwest you can get these vacuums for peanuts because everything is cheaper here. Just for fun I typed in the ZIP code of Beverly Hills, which is within Los Angeles, and it came up $40. If it doesn't sell just donate it to Goodwill or a mom and pop vacuum store who will appreciate it.

Take the handle apart, or ship it separately in a mailing tube, and that will keep the cost down.

When selling something on eBay, you first have to find an appropriately sized box, then you add packing material, box the item up as close as you can get, and then weigh it and list those measurements in the shipping calculator. That gives the most accurate results.

Remember that USPS increased their rates just 2 months ago, so you pay more now for dimensionally large packages.

about.usps.com/newsroom/national...

A big tall box will cost a lot to ship and the west coast is a long ways away. Try FedEx and UPS rates too, either of them work better at large packages.

Also do not assume what the buyer wants, because when I see a vacuum with no bag included, not original or not, I skip right over it. Just sell it as it was found.

BTW; I already have an AV-1, I got it from a member here and it didn't cost $190.

MadMan is right, when you have a high buy it now price, buyers will be scared off from making an offer because they know the seller thinks it can be traded in currency of solid gold bars. If it was me, after correcting the shipping, I'd sell it for about $25.

Funny

Thee are 2 screws on the handle and it breaks down the handle. 16x16x12 and 15 lbs. That's the dimnensions if you have enough sense to figure out how to use a screwdriver. The screws should all be flat head just to dumb it down for you.
You do realize a good majority of older vacuums are bought or sold by members of this board.
Ive shipped many vacuums. I usually message the seller on how to break down machines and most effecient way to ship.
Ebay's shipping date are horrible
Pirate ship.com is a site you get free discounted shipping priçes. If I had your vacuum I could break it down and chip it express for $40.

break down help

it has a one-piece handle that measures 36" with the cord running through it and i can't figure out how to get it into the 16x16x12 box i bought per Lesinutah's advice ...btw my screwdriver says it's a "snap-on" but i was still able to use it like a "flat-head". thanks bunches.

thanks huskyvacs! i did exactly what you said from the gitgo... boxed it up weighed it measured it and listed it just like you said and that's what ebay's calculator came up with. ups and fedex websites yielded similar results.
$50-$60 if i saw the 36" handle in three twelve inch sections to get it into the size box lesinutah suggested.

please help!!

I've gotten vacs from other parts of the country(same age and size as the above ge) in homemade boxes with shipping being around $50. I know usps has raised prices lately, but not that much. Try stacking and taping some smaller ones together, it seems to be the method of choice for many sellers for these older ones, and if done right works fine. Idk if it will make much of a difference, but its something to try.

I just had a vacuum shipped from eBay (canister so no long handle to deal with, but probably about the same weight). The seller offered USPS Priority or FedEx. For FedEx was a little less than half the USPS.

I really like when sellers offer the choice instead of just going USPS Priority. I'd rather wait a few more days to get it and save $20-40 bucks. And it actually delivered just as fast as USPS probably would have. It came about 4 days early.

I see you did try all 3, but just saying. Uprights I'm sure are harder because you have more issues getting the handle apart to get into a smaller package.

Also I'd agree on maybe making the opening price closer to what you'd be willing to accept. Sometimes I see stuff on eBay that sits there for months that the price is far higher than I'd be willing to pay but I just assume the seller won't take but a dollar or two less because you'd think by now someone else would've made an offer and got it if that was the case.

Of course, I understand too not wanting to price it really cheap and not make much on it, but rather wanting to wait and see what someone might come along and pay, I get that too.

While the cord might stay attached to the handle, you can still remove the handle and therefore use a smaller box. It's literally just one wing nut to remove, and you should be able to slip the cord past the clinch where the wing nut sits. Also, I feel like we're all helping you an awful lot for someone who's done nothing for us.

This is what the general electric AV1 looks like with its original bag and bumper. Mine belonged to the late Stan Kann who was the grandfather of the vacuum collecting hobby. If you do not know who Stan was, Google him and watch the YouTube videos.

dysonman1: work of art

to think GE went from that to the GE Affinity turbofan aircraft engine!!

Tell me something. If you had to ship it, how would you do it and what do you think it would cost?
TIA

I knew what your vacuum looks like as my model is similar except wood handle in the middle. I don't know if Tom will tell you but I shall. If the handle comes apart it would be the notch about an inch up. Take the handle wrap in bubble wrap. Take it out it inside the bag and bubble wrap the bag. The motor unit bubble wrap the wheels. Your box will be ling l. Shaped. The cord has 2 leads that are on the motor housing. The handle when you detach it have the cord unhooked. You could ship it in two boxes one for the handle the other 14x12x10 10 lbs is my guess on it.
I did ship a Riccar supralite Tom told me how to ship it. FedEx is probably your best bet. Pirateship. Come is free you save quite a bit. You have to box it and print the label yourself to get good rates. I'm guessing $40 to $50. EBay takes you to the Cleaners.

If you can get someone here to buy it, you could go through Offerup. Its my preferred way of doing it, as I have shipped HUGE boxes for $13 or so due to the special usps deal they have. I have done large, heavy boxes through them, you could do it for about the same price with that ge. The rates are fixed throughout the usa and i think the highest is $30(which will take a lot to get there).

Here's the pic of when I got my AV-1.

The handle unplugs from the socket at the base of the yoke. The box came out to 13lbs at 27x17x9. They shipped the handle in a separate mailing box USPS priority mail. Not sure on the handle, but that was a flat rate tube. The vacuum base was shipped UPS Ground.

The shipping for the handle was $10.80
The shipping for the vacuum itself was $23.65
Plus the $10 the seller wanted for the vacuum
It was $44.45 all together that I paid for mine.
Keep in mind this was 2 years ago and it was going from just Ohio to Indiana so it wasn't as far as Los Angeles to anywhere else.
