I'm a newbie to this site and to vacuum repair. I have a model G that I'm having trouble with. When I turn it on it runs for a second then kicks the bag door open. I have a new bag and have adjusted the knob under the hose inlet to no avail.
I read in the archives about removing tubes and cleaning them to resolve the problem. I need help finding those tubes and would be open to any other suggestions to get the old girl working correctly again. I grew up with this model g so it has some sentimental value to it.

I do have the original hose, aluminum tube power head, and an aluminum tube edge or hard surface tool?
Not sure on the proper names.

The link......

is great. Replace all that old tubing. Tubing is standard size.....take some with you to a hardware store.

That may be all it needs to start working again. If not....you have to dig deeper into that system and test gaskets for leakage.

There is a secret to those tubes. Generally, the tube that connect the mechanism to the dirt inlet is the problem. Not in the tube itself, but in the brass piece the tube connects to. There's a tiny hole that runs into the inside of the dirt inlet. That tiny hole gets clogged. A bread twisty with the plastic removed, leaving the wire, is the right size to go through there and unclog it. Then replace the vinyl tube and it should 'pop open' correctly again.

and i don't know how, but i've even found one that had a little place where it connects that had split somehow. i don't know how it still worked because it was barely hanging on. and i've found some that had been glued in place. i know thats not right

Your model G

Can be added to and updated to include an electric hose and power nozzle for deep thorough carpet cleaning. If the original hose is not leaking l, an external wire wrap can be used on it to get power out to the power nozzle as well.

The automatic control dial works as follows: It adjusts the sensitivity of the automatic control feature. The automatic control feature constantly monitors suction before and after the bag, when the bag fills with dirt some suction is lost, and when it is enough the diaphragm in the bad door will close and make the bag door pop open to signal time to check or change the bag. Number one allows the least amount of suction loss to trigger the automatic control while 6 allows the cleaner to run with the greatest suction loss from a full bag before the door pops open. It was suggested that the dial be kept at 3 and only temporarily adjusted from that position for temporary unusual cleaning jobs then returned to 3 after the job was done.

A lower number would be a regular setting for people who suck up lots of hair or pet hair...it is a coarse dirt that allows for good airflow, therefore the bag will become full with this type of dirt before a significant amount of suction is lost.

A higher number would be a regular setting for people who suck up more fine powdery dirt regularly. The bags pores will clog quickly with this type of dirt cutting off suction quickly and if the setting isn’t high enough the bag door will keep opening with minimal dirt in the bag.

Let’s say you have to use the vac to pick up some Sheetrock or plaster dust or ashes, this will clog the bag quickly and activate the feature before your cleaning job is done so you should set the dial to a higher number to complete the job to retard the operation, finish the job, then throw away the bag and reset the dial to your optimal “regular” setting.

To find your best setting, when starting with a fresh bag, set the dial to 1 or 2...then clean, when the bag door pops open check the bag, if not full enough move the dial up one number then close the door and continue cleaning and repeat this process every time the door opens. At some point you’ll notice that the suction power isn’t as good as you like it, that’s going to be your indicator that you probably should be changing the bag at the previous set number, so it doesn’t have to stay running at an inefficient suction loss level which is dissatisfactory for effective deep cleaning. Using a lower number maintains peak efficiency but you’ll be changing the bag more frequently, a higher number will allow more dirt to be packed in the bag but as this occurs the cleaning efficiency will diminish. They key is to find your “sweet spot”.

A lot of people end up leaving their machines in 6 which is bad because it causes strain on the motor shortening motor life and less effectiveness of the cleaner when the bag is close to completely packed. People think they should pack their bags to the gills to save money on bags but what they don’t realize is that they will shorten the life of the cleaner and their carpet.

My Aunt had this problem on her Electrolux, bag door kept popping open even on 6. She took it in for service. Not sure what the guy did but afterward he told her she was picking up very fine dirt which was true because I was the one who was using the vac when this started happening. Unfortunately she did not clean her home and lived alone, when I came to visit the place was filthy, so I was cleaning and the amount of dust that had been pulverized into the carpet had turned into powder from the failure to regularly vacuum the rugs. The powdery dirt managed to make its way in the suction dirt inlet sensing hole and into the system throwing things off making it super sensitive. It is possible this has happened to your or the sensing hole has clogged with dirt.

Hope this helps

I have some pics of my model G which is upgraded to include a power hose, L shaped Electrolux power nozzle and also have the Electric sheath and wand to allow for integrated wired connections for the power nozzle at the hose handle so there are no wires to deal with plugging and unplugging. I did paint my model G dark blue so it looks different but once was the pretty aqua color. It had tiny rust spots on the upper half of the body so I wanted them gone. Anyway, you too can upgrade your G to be a cleaning powerhouse if you like!

Also included a picture of the flip over combination straight suction rug and floor tool. It unclicks from the elbow and you flip it over and snap it back on to switch from rug to hard floor cleaning and back again.

Jon

Both my model G's (the household model and the hospital model) are wonderful machines with lots of sentimental value to me. Love these machines.

All the attachments

Fit on the hose end or the wands. Everything is the standard 1 1/4 inch size. The original equipment would have been the hose, two aluminum wands, combination rug and floor tool, combination dusting and upholstery tool which I see you have stored on the clip, and a crevice tool for narrow spaces. Optional equipment at the time would have been the electric power nozzle with the rotating brush, model PN-1 but any Electrolux or Aerus power nozzle will work with it provided it has the 1 1/4” wand opening. The nice thing is you can upgrade your machine if you like. The optional power nozzle would have included an external wire wrap that had straps to hold it on the hose. During the run of the next model after the G which was the totally redesigned model 1205 an integrated electric hose was introduced that included the wiring built into it. The lower level Model L also had the optional integrated electric hose but was designed to also fit your machine which needs a “pigtail” hose where the machine end electrical connection is made by a small pigtail wire coming out of the hose fitting which gets plugged into the mini power port either on the front of the bag door below the dial, or near the right front wheel. All model G’s had the port in one of the two places. It was moved to the side by the wheel as it was found the cords were pulling out on the front mounted ones. Some of the late 90’s to current Aerus upper models were changed to use a different size plastic wand system. That won’t fit your machine. But any of the attachments included with today’s Aerus Lux Classic model will indeed fit your model G! In case you didn’t know Aerus is the new name for a Electrolux since 2003 when Electrolux if Sweden bought back the Electrolux name from the US Electrolux company.

i still have the original hose, power nozzle and all the rest of the goodies but the machine itself has somehow disappeared. probably along with the blue eureka i used in a cleaning competition years ago. i had 3. sold 2 and kept the one that is shown with the original power nozzle.

I would.....

stay away from sheet rock dust and fireplace ash. Even though the machines can handle them, they cause residual trouble.....especially sheet rock dust. Let a wet & dry vac swallow that stuff. It will be hard and that too.....but it's a W&D not a G....lol.

I use my shop vac with the washable filter when I vac drywall dust, not sure about Sheetrock brand, is it worse?
My F I just recently restored, it’s just gets a retired life vacuuming the race deck floor in my garage. Nothing more. 61 years of cleaning, that’s enough.
