Simple supply and demand.

There's not exactly a lot of 50-year-old machines laying around.
I wouldn't pay those prices but I also wouldn't fault anybody for picking one of those up 50 years later new in the box for that price.

The owner's wife probably told him to get rid of it so he listed it with an 'I really don't want to sell it' price.

Well

I guess he could give it a shot at a high price and if it doesn’t sell always drop the price.

the recent revival in vinyl has caused one particular make of vintage record player [Dansette] to sell for ridiculous prices over here in the UK .back in the 50s and 60s these machines were knocked out really cheaply with cheap hardboard cabinets and just enough inside them to make them perform .Fast forward to the present day and you have young people buying these machines and expecting them to not only work but sound like a modern record player

Don't....

even start with me and vintage stereo electronics. I've been in that for over 40yrs. We've gotten to a place where it's like trying to buy your way into Heaven. The people with the money attempting to do that, have absolutely no background in audio and no clue what they are doing.

It's horrifying to watch.......they're not building systems....they're just going with what they heard, like gambling.

Personally I wouldn't pay anywhere near those prices for a brand new vacuum. If I buy a vacuum, I'm going to want to use it, and that defeats the purpose of buying a brand new one. Because I wouldn't want to use it.

WOW

If I'm going to spend that money on a vacuum, I'm buying a brand new Kirby.

Kevin is right. The big problem is influencers on YouTube and other clueless sheep that parrot the same mantra about a particular brand or model - with absolutely 0 experience in doing so. If someone on YouTube tells them its rare or to buy it, off they go.
