Model U3105

Got this from an estate sale. Tagged $50, on the last day so half off, I still wasn't interested at $25. I simply asked the guy how much for the two vacuum cleaners if I buy both, he replied $5 each. Couldn't pass that up. It's become yet another unneeded project.

It's kinda banged up (obviously elderly owned), but I thought I'd see what I could do just for funsies. So far I've replaced the belts and bulbs. The power drive handle was stuck, so I freed that up so it self propels again. It sounds like crap. Basically all the bearings are bad: brush, motor, transmission.

The transmission seems to use the same bearing as the brushroll, which I believe is part number 43267002. Can anyone confirm that?

I tore apart the transmission today trying to figure out how to take up the slack between forward and reverse. I imagine it's 'not adjustable' but I don't take that for an answer. I can make shims to add behind the thrust bearings, and that should do it. I've admittedly never used a self propelled vac before, it's kind of disorienting. But I think it's made worse by worn out clutches. It takes a lot of movement of the handle to get to engagement, and forward in particular doesn't want to grab at all. I have to really ram the handle to get it to grab and go. So I will shim those bearings and that should mitigate that problem, I'm imagining. Any other suggestions for that?

Lastly, the motor I also tore down today. I was pissed off to find the back bearing is a completely open needle bearing. What the hell was Hoover thinking? This motor is jam-packed with dust... gee, it's almost like a machine that cleans dust might be exposed to it. Here's my idea, the original needle bearing is a J65. I want to buy the bearing linked below which is a bit longer (7/16" instead of 5/16"), but has shaft seals to keep out dust. On the motor housing, the bearing looks like it had a shoulder to butt up against, once upon a time, but as I found it, it's destroyed, so I could simply press the longer bearing in past the broken shoulder, and it would stick out of the back a bit.

Thoughts?

That's a nice self propelled vacuum. They had one at restore recently. The transmission cable was cut, power switch wouldn't work and it sounded rough.
I'm sure you can get the transmission to work. Couldn't you take a new wire solder on the ends or attach the correct ends. I'm guessing but it's not in bad shape.

The cable is not really any different from a throttle / choke cable. I'm sure it could be replaced with that. Though the hand end of the cable might be tricky to fabricate.

Have had a number of these over the years. Such outstanding vacuums and a unique sound.

Sure wish I had carpet! Nobody in Vegas has it I seem to notice

Someone used like a mower cable. The end of the mower cable you could drill a small hole thread through the wire and use either a crosby clamp or crimp fitting.
