As a spin off thread to the blondie subject , what about tv series vac appearences? Who remembers what? One that springs to mind for me is a constellation in "Timeslip" 1970. Another a Junior 1334 being used in Crossroads 1964 onwards ( Amy Turtle doing the settee in the sitting room with the tools attached saying something like "Im fed up of doing this!!) A Lux 55 in "Kizzy" 60s/early 70s about an orphaned gypsy girl. Am sure I will think of loads more. See how you get on!

I remember the vacuums shown on Mama'S Family, my favorit tv show. She had an older green convertible, then a Kenmore twin fan, a blue Kenmore canister, an orange constellation,a turquise Eureka upright, a plastic base brown convertible, and in 1 flash back episode and old Royal or Kirby in the back ground. My favorite vacuum being the old green Convertible. I also liked the DAM from on Bewitched.

I just spoted what looks like a Hoover 150 on the Brady Bunch. It was in a lady's garage. The episode is where the dog gets lost. It seemed pretty early as the kids seemed pretty young.

Who could forget the Lux XXX on My Three Sons? Seldom did you see anyone running it. Usually they were putting it away, carrying it downstairs, or something. There was also a Lux XXX on an episode of The Wonder Years.
Father Knows Best--an Airway, if I remember right
Leave It To Beaver--G.E. Swiveltop
Love That Bob--Big Wheel Lewyt
Petticoat Junction--Kirbys in at least 2 episodes
And does anyone else remember the episode of the Little Rascals where they were using a Lux XII as a milking machine? It no doubt would have had to be specially made for that one.
Or how about the episode of Man From U.N.C.L.E. where Thrush was smuggling missiles or something in the bags of upright vacuums and a sweeper shop was the "front" for their operations?
And I think I remember one episode of The Fugitive where someone he is visiting (his sister, maybe?) is running a Hoover 28.
This is fun! How 'bout some more?
Jeff

Family Matters

Who can forget the episode where Carl tries to fix the Powerdrive turquoise and white U6039 Hoover DAM? I also recall seeing a Hoover spirit in the utility room off the kitchen.

I remember seeing a show with Bernadette Peters demonstrating how to exercise with a blue Royal upright. It was some popular talk/variety show in the late 70's or early 80's. She was trying to show how many calories a housewife could burn by simply changing the way she vacuumed to make it more of a workout. I remember it because my mother had a blue Royal upright and I was already fascinated by vacuums. Anyone else remember seeing anything like that and what show it was on?

"Batchelor Father" has Peter the houseboy vacuuming with a loaded GE Cord-Reel, the noise the vacuuming action makes sounds like a tune to him, and goes "da da da da-dee da da". I remember the tune, I looked for the chance of a YouTube clip, no dice. His tune ended up being sold to a Twilight Zone kind of show for an opening theme. His looks like June Cleaver's GE. Here's a pic again of a badly colorized Roll-Easy on "I Dream Of Jeannie".

I remember seeing the green Convertible on Mama's Family - a miracle because I've watched the show only a couple times - and it looked BRAND NEW. The machine was at least 25 years old by that time. I would love to know how they found it.

Someone said it was a model 66. I don't remember it being that model - my memory is of a non-headlight model. But it was definitely olive green, and the guy from Mayberry RFD was using, very carefully...

You are right, it was a non headlight model and I don't remember ever seeing vint using it, it was always Thelma vacuuming with exception of the one where her cousin Lydia came to visit and Iola was vacuuming with a turquise Eureka upright also in mint condition as were all of her other vacuums shown through the series.

I also remember Alice vacuuming on the Brady Bunch with her Convertible 1020 I liked that because it is the same as Grandmas Convertible

What about

Everybody Loves Raymond? Raymond's mother had a Hoover 63

"one Day at a Time" "All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons" all shared a Hoover Convertible U4059 in 1976 or so.

Edith Bunker also had an old Royal, a Convertible 719, and a Dial-A-Matic 1149 in addition to the 70's Convertible.
The 719 Convertible also appeared on "Maude" as well as a yellow Convertible U4089.

Alice on Brady Bunch also used a Model L Electrolux.

At least one episode of Twilight Zone - starts out with a man living in the past, there's an old coffee-can Hoover (541?) standing in his living room; then he goes to the future and the machine is then a Constellation!

Everybody Loves Raymond also featured a Rainbow in one episode. If I recall correctly, the machine was a key part of the plot of that episode.

The Pruitts of Southhampton with Phyllis Diller - Kirby D50 (?)

In addition to the Roll-Easy in the Mitchell household, Mrs. Wilson used both an Electrolux XXX and Hoover Convertible in various episodes.

There is an episode of "Alice" with Linda Lavin, from the late 1970s, where "Flo" comes to say with Alice as her trailor had been stolen!
Turns out "Flo" is a slob and impossible to live with and stays up all night , so the next morning Alice tries cleaning up her apartment using a Compact Vacuum. We dont see the machine, but we do see the hose, wands, and unmistakable floor tool,,the hose handle grip is also unmistakable Compact.
The noise of the vac(which really IS the actual Compact vac) dosent work in waking up Flo, who is asleep on the couch,,so Alice throws down the vacuum wand, and leaves the apartment with the vacuum running. haha

There is an episode of Leave it to Beaver where June is using a Compact to clean the furniture,,again, unmistakable handle grip gives it away, altho we dont actually see the machine,,just the hose. Wally comes in from school right then, so, the vac hose in only in the shot for a few seconds.
Of course she is wearing pearls and high heels!

I always wished we could see what kind of vacuum Mary used to clean her little apartment on the MTM Show,,,i always invisioned a 70s Hoover Convertable 1020, or a Hoover Junior.

On All in the Family, whenever a vacuum was in use, they rarely had the actual vacuum turned on,,and used special effects sounds for a vacuum running,,,i wonder why?
There is an episode of "Archie" vacuuming the dining room floor with a blue Hoover upright, and the bag is not inflated at all,,,but you hear a vacuum sound = cheesy!

There is an epiose of AITF where Archie is trying to cook himself something in the kitchen (he and Edith had a fight) and he makes a horrible mess, and goes to the broom closet to get the broom,,,,there is a green Kenmore Cannister tucked back in the closet, and the hose and wands, plus all the other normal broom closet stuff comes flying out, like Fibber McGee's closet.

There is an episode of "Here's Lucy" from the early 1970s, where Lucy goes schlepping a Hoover Portable all over the neighborhood, with the cover open, and hose, cord and attachments all falling and hanging out,,,of course she ends up selling one to "Mr Mooney" and sucks up his necktie in the vacuum,,,while he is still wearing it!

While it's a movie...

There is a Three Stooges short, when they were grouped together for "The Stooges Comedy Hour" on Saturday mornings, then of course after school for television, that has Moe, Larry and Curly as mechanics. I don't remember the name or the subject, but they are using a Lux XII. It is sitting on a table in front of an automobile. They do use it, but for what I don't know.

In the Honeymooners, Ralph buys Alice some tank cleaner. It is used and he and Norton can't get it to work right. Ralph decides the hose is clogged, and starts to blow into it. Just then Norton turns it on, and Ralph gets sucked into it. Panicked, Norton "reverses" the motor to release Ralph, and he is filled with air 'til his eyes bug out. Of course we all know this couldn't have happened, it was done so Ralph would have reason to yell and scream. I would like to know what brand that machine was though...!

And finally, the Marx Brothers, A night in Casablanca, 1947. Harpo, as valet for an self-exiled Nazi official(Sig Rumann), who is staying at the Hotel Casablanca in disguise, under a fake name begins to vacuum the hotel room. He is using a Lux XXX with the earliest of the three rug tools available to that model. Disturbed by the apparent inefficiency of the nozzle, Harpo rips it off the wand and throws it offstage. You can hear it clatter around for a while. While exchanging that one for a different tool, Harpo rests the wand on his shoulder and Rumann's toupee is sucked into the machine. It's actually the whole point to the movie, as the toupee has Rumann's real name embroidered into the hair piece. The toupee also hides a scar that would immediately identify him to the authorities.

HAHA, WOW, that is so cool!

I remember an episode of "The Partrige Family" where Shirley Jones (the Mom) is vacuuming the entryway of their house (LONG yellow or gold shag carpet) with a very early Oreck.

There is also an episode of "The Golden Girls", where "Rose" (Betty White) is trying out a pair of "Vacuum Slacks" with a Special Model Silverado Lux, only she has the vac on blow instead of suck, so it dosent work,,,of course! lol

Remember the TV show "Angie", with Donna Pescow? Had to have been late 1970s, to early 1980s.
I distinctly remember an episode where Angie is using a brand shiny new 1979 Filter Queen.

There's another Here's Lucy where she tries to vacuum up a s#!tload of marbles that spilled on the tile floor in her kitchen -- with a Hoover 28...!! (Or was it a 305 heheh??)

And there's another Three Stooges with a straight-suction Royal whose bag grows bigger and bigger, à la Blondie, until it floats up into the air. Don't remember any more of the plot than that. And there's another one where the Stooges are living outdoors on a vacant lot. They have their entire household set up on the grass and dirt, and there's a Premier upright standing there.

The Honeymooners

Yes, It was a G.E. Airflo tank, with the short runners. IIRC, they removed the General Electric nameplate from the machine.

on the partrige fam it was a Regina brush and beat if I remember right.
Roseanne,
Jackie had a Hoover Spirit she used for cleaning her apt.,
Who's the boss had some kind of kenmore and didn't Grace under fire have one like it?
What was the hoover (upright) over in the corner on Lavern and Shirley?
Family Matters also had a canister of some sort, Steve was vacuuming and sucked the water and fish out of the fish tank in Carl's living room. It has been to many years since I have seen it to remember what it was.
Remember the Cosby show in the ninties with Madelin Kahn? In the closet Cosby's wife (the same wife from the original Cosby show) had a cheap white and blue round hood Eureka upright.

I happened to catch S5 E17 of THE DONNA REED SHOW, "A Woman's Place", with a scene of Mary vacuuming with a Hoover Convertible. It originally aired on January 10, 1963, so I'm guessing that since it had a non-white handle without a hand grip it was a Model 31 Special. I was half watching, so it may have been a Model 65, but I don't think it had a headlight.

It reminded me of the one I've seen on several episodes of THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, which Aunt Bee kept by the back door in the kitchen.

There was an episode of The Bob Newhart show where they had an Electrolux 1205, I believe it was on a chair and they were using it as a blower. Also, there was an old sitcom called Please Don't Eat the Daisies, where they used a Hoover 913 to vacuum their giant old house. On Seinfeld there was a few episodes that there was Kirby Sanitronic 7 being used in George Costanza's parents house, also on the Sopranos, there was a similar Kirby in Tony's mothers house. Also, on the Sopranos, even though Tony's house had central vacuum, the cleaning service uses a Sanitaire SC886 upright.

The vacuum knowledge everyone has is impressive. You guys are mentioning shows 70 years ago (the 3 stooges). It could be older than I mentioned too. Truly impressive knowledge.
