So less then a year ago, I got a used Kirby Sentria from a thrift store, super dirty and abused. After a complete tear down, cleaning, and lubing, it works perfectly *except* one problem.

When tech drive is engaged, while pushing or pulling, specifically when going fast, and when it transitions from one direction to another, I hear a loud pop or click. It sounds like of like gears skipping teeth but I don't see any evidence of this happening, and all the teeth on the tech drive appear to be in good shape. The tech drive is biased correctly, the roller bearings on the handle assembly are oiled and in good shape. I cannot seem to find what is making this noise, as it only happens with proper use, so I cannot really recreate it on the bench. I saw someone suggest it could be a weak centering spring on the handle assembly but haven't tried that yet as I don't have a spare spring.

The entire pedal assembly is brand new as it was broken off when I got the machine, and of the three I've repaired, it's the only one to make this noise, so I'm fairly sure it's not something I've done. I've considered swapping the tech drive from my Avalir 2 to see if the issue follows the tech drive, but haven't gotten that far, as the Avalir 2 was basically new when I got it and I hate to disassemble it for this purpose.

Any ideas?

I've got a G5 with a noisy TechDrive. It makes a little ticking noise when I push it back and forth in neutral. It's made this noise ever since I've had it, which is about five years. I've heard it said it's the TechDrive starting to go out. I got a replacement last fall but I've never gotten around to putting it on. We'll see...

The gears are slipping. If you upgrade tech drive go sentria 2 or newer.
If you are mechanically inclined take it apart. I have a YouTube video saved of a 9 year old kid take a tech drive out in less than five minutes. I'd take pics make sure it goes together. You open up the internals of the tech drive you will find the problem and can probably fix it.
