I thought I'd start a thread with photos of my vacuum sightings at thrift stores, garage sales, etc.

Today I went to this thrift store which usually has a decent amount of vacs. In the past their pricing was quite high, $50 for a Kirby, $25 Windtunnels, etc.

Today each of the uprights and the two mini uprights were only $10. The Kirby though was $30. That tall cylinder vacuum I don't know the brand of but they wanted $125!

I really liked that mini blue Bissell Poweforce and it was tempting. It looked alright other than the missing dusting brush.

The white Kenmore Intuition looked good and had all the attachments but was marked "dog stink-you clean". LOL

I have a yellow Eureka like that but the filter is missing. I like then but they are too loud to me.

Ooof, that is an Air way, and that particular one is not worth a whole lot. I would have gotten that Dirt Devil though, looks nice and is quite rare.

The airway sanitizer is an awesome vacuum. They wanted $125. If it's complete in pristine condition it could get maybe $100.
That's a nice score on the dirt devils.
The thrift store down here had Kirby shampoo kits. The other store had a filter queen for $75. Its funny 3 months ago I got a better filter queen for $15.
The only other vacuum was the oreck Titan or Hercules hand vac. It was a newer version of the orexk xl. It had less than the orexk xl. It looked like it would have power but nope.
I didn't take pics as I wasn't impressed.
Its nice to see thrift stores opening again.

Today I was off so went to two estate sales and two thrift stores.

The first sale just had a newer metal shop vac.

Second estate sale had a late 80s or early 90s Kenmore Powermate canister, light gray with silver hose and no cover over the attachments. It was in great condition, even the hose was not split and had all attachments. But it had mildew all over it. So needless to say I didn't buy it. There were also some interesting old metal attachments for a vacuum in a box. I don't know what they went to.

Goodwill had only an Oreck upright and a few mops.

The other thrift store had a few vacuums, mostly bagless Bissells, an older Eureka soft bad upright and a maroon Galaxy bagged upright (Sears). There was also a Hoover Quikbroom bagged stick vacuum which was the only vintage one there.

Yeah overpriced on that Air Way. Speaking of Kirbys the store I got the pics at had a Kirby G3 in another room with the shampoo kit in the box. No price on it.

It is nice to see thrift stores and estate sales again. Although this is the first week I've seen garage sales happening since about a month ago when there was one or two after the reopening.

I hit one thrift store today, for the first time in I can't remember when.
A few vacuums, but nothing particularly interesting or vintage.
There was a newer upright that I didn't even notice the brand of.
One small wet/dry vac. Used, but in its original box.
And a newish, black Eureka canister. Looked fairly clean. I saw the hose/wand and floor nozzle. No power nozzle. I don't know that this model ever had one. I apologize, but I forgot the model name. I thought it was was going to be a Mighty Mite, but it wasn't. I believe they wanted around $20 for it.
Now that I think about it, there was an even smaller wet/dry looking vac, on the shelf with the small appliances. It was no bigger than an average Crock Pot, and had a bunch of its tools in a little bag with it. Didn't notice the price.

Barry

Edit:
I believe the Eureka canister was a Rally.

I went back to the thrift store in those pictures today, but didn't get any pictures this time. Out of the vacuums in the pictures I posted originally, the Dirt Devil and the Kenmore were still there. There was now today an older model Miele Powerhouse upright in blue that looked a lot like a Panasonic made upright, which was $10.

I like those Miele Powerhouses. Though they aren't rare, or particularly special, they are interesting to me because of the Miele name. I wouldn't get that Dirt Devil in a rush. They really aren't rare, they are easy to find time to time. If it's been a couple of weeks without it going, and you don't have one, I'd say buy it. I think $5 is a good price for that one considering it's' the most basic model. It's not even a "deluxe" model, which means its got the edger. Even though on the bag door it says deluxe. There's definitely cooler vacuums than the ones in that thrift store.

The Miele was interesting to me, since I've never seen a Miele upright around that I can remember. If it was a truly Miele-made version, I would have probably gotten it, just because I don't have any Mieles in my collection. They aren't common around here.

The Dirt Devil was pretty nice, but didn't particularly interest me as far as being in my collection... the DD models I'm more after are the Broomvac, the MVP, and the hand vac. I've seen a few Broomvacs around, but most have been more than I wanted to pay.

Here is from another thrift store today. Hiding in back was a Eureka Bravo style upright. That Hoover Elite Supreme was like the one my grandma had from 1996. The Oreck upright carpet cleaner I think is the Regina design. The Hoover Quikbroom had the nozzle with that big dial on top snd side wheels.

I haven't seen anything worthwhile at the thrifts around here since I scored my $3 Electrolux Epic 3500SR upright almost two months ago but that's not unusual. It's more famine than feast around here. Plus, my likes tend more toward vintage, bagged and metal so I would easily overlook things without a second glance that others might find quite exciting.

I haven't seen any Kirby or Electrolux in a while. Goodwill used to get them but it's been a few years since I've seen any there.

I would like to have a Kirby, probably a Sentria or newer, or the old Classic Omega for my collection, but I'd have to have my own place first.

Pickings have been slim around these parts as well. Which is probably a good thing. As I'm running out of room to store them.

At Goodwill this afternoon, there was one vaccum. A purple Kenmore Progressive bagless upright, the same TOL model my friend had, with Direct Drive and Intelliclean. It was tempting at $12.99, looked clean, touchpad buttons didn't have any breaks or missing buttons, and all of the onboard tools seemed to be there.

Willpower helped me avoid it, plus 1) I already have the bagged version of this, and 2) I really didn't like the pleated filter design these had with the filter inside the cyclone bin. My mom used to have a cheaper model with this system and the filter always needed to be vacuumed out. Plus this one in particular is even worse, because unlike hers it doesn't have the perforated ring to trap larger dust/hair debris before it gets to the filter.

That Royal tank is a great cleaner! There was an episode of Growing Pains where the kid destroyed a brand new one on accident that his mom brought home to test for a newspaper review and then the whole episode revolves around that plot.

Today I went to Goodwill, and there was a Dyson ball upright of some kind. I think the Multi Floor 2 model. I kinda wanted it because I don't have a Dyson in my collection, and I never used one.

Then I went to an estate sale, and there was a Kirby Avalir 2 G10D that they wanted $225 for. I also saw two older Electrolux canister vacuums with power nozzles and bins of attachments, but they were in a cabinet so I didn't know if they were for sale. But the people running the sale were talking amongst themselves and said a lady wanted to buy the bags for the Electrolux vacuums. One of the ladies said that she could get Electrolux bags on eBay, and they wanted to keep some of the bags to use with the vacuums.

And yeah, I know that was a really, really good deal on the Kirby, with how new it is. I would have bought it if I didn't live with my parents, because it takes up so much room with the attachments and all.

Goodwill today had a Kenmore 600 Series canister vac, the newer purple model, so it couldn't have been more than a couple years old. It was marked $39.99 but purple tags are 50% off this week. Still I couldn't bring myself to buy it. It DID have all the attachments with it including the Pet mini motorized tool. But it was quite dirty in the bag compartment and it just had that greasy look that said to me it was likely used in a house with smelly dogs. I decided to pass.

Habitat had a bagless Hoover Windtunnel upright that had self propelled. Which I thought was interesting because the other day I was wondering if Hoover ever made a self propelled bagless upright, which now I know they did. It was in good shape but I never liked that twin chamber bagless setup it had, and I'd rather have a bagged one.

Mainly I'm trying to go more for the truly vintage metal vacuums from the 50s-70s now. I have enough all plastic vacuums, ones I want of course, but I'd rather go for metal ones in the future. The problem is they don't turn up nearly as often as plastic vacs.

Kirby Sentria

human's profile picture
So yesterday, I was out running errands and stopped in at a thrift store I hadn't been to in quite some time and there by the entrance was a Kirby Sentria in decent shape with a full array of accessories. The only thing was they wanted $199 for it and I wasn't about to pay that, especially considering I have one I bought about three years ago on eBay for $110, plus $20 shipping. I would consider $200 to be pretty much full retail for that machine. I'm guessing somebody actually took the time to look it up online and good for them for doing so. The price tag shows scheduled weekly price drops and if it's still in the shop on March 23, it'll bottom out at $53. I might consider it at that price but I hope they get more for it because I do like the charity that runs the shop, plus it would save me from myself by removing the temptation to buy it.

I have never paid over $50 for any of the Kirbys I have. The only ones out of my reach thus far are the Avalir 1 and 2, and anything from before the 1950s, and a couple of the 1980s models which are popular and get bidded on too much (Tradition, in blue, and the Legend, and the DS80). I got the Diamond Edition Ultimate G at Goodwill for just $30. I've been wanting that one ever since I started collecting, as I have a lot of throw rugs.

Try a pawn shop over a thrift shop if you want to get the newer Kirbys, often they are pretty cheap considering it's a brand new or lightly used Kirby that is only 1-2 years old.

Today I stopped at an estate sale that was full of 90s Hoovers. There was a green Hoover Elite Supreme hard bag upright, a Hoover Steamvac, and in the garage a green Hoover Tempo canister with the attachments but no wands. Apparently nobody wanted any of them since it was the third day of the sale.

If you sell on EBay the royal with power nozzle would go for$150 easy. I sold off some of my herd in December. I got 2 Kirby heritage 2 shake out versions for $10. I put a fan on one and cleaned them both up. I parted out a few vacuums. I'm getting my serger in the next few weeks. I'm putting on a fill tube and a zipper to each heritage 2's. I also got a classic 3 for $10 and a zipper and fill tube will make it HEPA.
I try to make money selling vacuums and not spending money to fix them. I have quite a bit of parts and resourceful when fixing.
I have 2 Bissell proheat times two. There really solid performing shampooers.

Today at Habitat there was a Hoover Spirit, I think it was brown. Had the hose, wands, and power nozzle with headlight, and some extra Hoover bags, but no other attachments, for $8. Looked like a fairly equipped model with cord reel and bag check light. Not a bad price, but I left it. Too many at the moment!

Goodwill has been dry lately for vacuums. But today there were a few modern uprights, along with a Fantom Fury. I do have to wonder if that Fury is the same one that I had mentioned seeing, and passing on, at an estate sale a few weeks ago.

They wanted $8.98. It was in decent shape, but the only attachment it had was the crevice tool. It seems Fantom attachments are hard to find.

Anyway, with that Kenmore canister curb find still being in my trunk, I decided to pass on the Fantom (again?). If it's still there on my typical Friday evening stop by, I may have to consider it again.

Only reason I stopped by today was happened to be on that side of town.

Wow. I only wish I could find a Fantom that cheap. They sell for $150-$200+ all day long on eBay. They are highly collectible. It's been on my list of vacs to get for the past 4 years. I have found both Hoover Z series for cheaper and that are even rarer than a Fantom if that makes any sense. lol

I went back to Goodwill Friday afternoon for my usual browse, and that Fury was still there. I still couldn't convince myself to get it, I also noticed that the top carry handle is missing.

Today I went to two estate sales. At the first there was some modern Hoover Bagless upright, a Craftsman Shop Vac, as well as one of those Kenmore "Heavy Duty" carpet cleaner/wet-dry vacuums. I was kind of interested in it, but completely turned off by the price - $200 firm! It didn't even appear to have the hose with it! No way I'd pay that even if it were complete. Oh well, I already have the two tone gray model anyway, I don't need another.

The second estate sale had an older Kirby with the attachments. I probably should have given it a closer look, but I don't collect them. I believe it was a pre 70s model. There was also a Sunbeam Mixmaster of the late 60s style in beige color. They wanted $45, and I already have enough mixers.

Today I went to two estate sales. One had a little Dirt Devil bagless upright for $50 (!!). The other had a Tristar (newer gray/black version) for $75. Looked complete. Today was half off. If I had the space I'd have probably gotten it, just to see what they're all about.

I also went to a liquidation store here that sells store returns and such. There was a Kenmore Elite canister there (the rose gold colored model, which I think means it's a non-Sears retail version). But it was behind some ribbons indicating it wasn't for sale at the moment.

Not much sightings today.

Habitat had a mint condition gray Hoover Futura straight suction
A gold Dirt Devil Swivel Glide bagged upright
and a Stanley 1 gallon shop vac
and a Genie yellow shop vac

I thought the Stanley 1 gallon was interesting because it looks just like my HyperTough one I got at Walmart to clean my car, just different colors

I did find get some genuine Kenmore HEPA O bags for upright for $2. It seems I can often find genuine Kenmore bags at the thrift stores. Last time I found some genuine F&G bags for my Eureka.

Goodwil mostly had some cheapie Bissell uprights and some floor steamers.

Another thrift shop I went to had a Hoover Concept One Powerdrive in the mint green color scheme and an older Hoover Portapower.

Yesterday I went to a thrift store out of town as I had the day off. There was a Kenmore Self Propelled Twin Fan upright with a bojack way of using a string to hold the bag up, a dark gray Hoover Futura canister, a yellow bagless Kenmore canister, and an early 90s white Craftsman portable wet/dry vac/blower.

This thrift store is also good for finding bags, but they didn't have anything I needed this visit.

Bingo!

I would have bought the same one….if I had plenty of space for extra vacs!

Good score…rarely see these in a thrift store.

I saw a cordless Bissell air ram earlier this week. Almost bought it but decided to fiddle with it and try it there in the store as it did work. L with space limitations and no need for it I decided to leave it for someone else to enjoy but I thought it was unique and something I’ve never seen before,

The Hoover Power Drive and whatever that blue bagless is with the computerized handle buttons buried in the middle of the pile is the ones I would grab. I have never seen the XL2 in red before.

I have that Bissell ProHeat Pet shampooer, it is an excellent shampooer but it puts out a lot of water if you have area rugs and I had to retire mine for that reason and get a Hoover PowerDash Pet. The Bissell does surprisingly well on low pile carpet believe it or not. Hard to find an upright shampooer that can do carpeting like that. It gets a good seal to the floor.

I haven't seen much lately other than the usual plasticrap vacs that hold exactly zero interest for me. Of course, I've been under a self-imposed moratorium on vacuums since last November so I haven't really been looking. I went seriously overboard for most of 2021 and realized I'd hit a saturation point. I've actually walked away from three Kirbys since the first of the year but I did have a moment of weakness a few weeks ago picked up a little Oreck BB compact canister for about the cost of a hamburger. I covered that more thoroughly in another thread.

When the Oreck XL2 Ultra was sold, they were available in three different colors. I personally like the looks of the black version the best but I think the yellow and red versions are also very cool looking as well, probably even more rare than the black one so that's one of the reasons why I bought the red one.

In my area I don't see either the yellow or the red one pop up from time to time. At least the red one might be more rare than the other two.

Agreed. Kenmore and the two Kirbys.

That Eureka on the far right of photo #3 is historically famous due to that "cleans better than dyson" claim they stuck on there. It got them in trouble with James Dyson and that vacuum got pulled from the market expeditiously. They sold enough of them, but it never had a full life cycle, and most people tore those stickers off. Just an interesting little tidbit of history.

PS: If that is a Lindhaus in Reply# 51 might want to get that vacuum too, those vacuums are $800 and up retail and only sold in commercial dealers, so getting one cheap is a great deal. I believe they are Italian made.

I actually didn't get the Lindhaus for a good reason, it's seen the end of it's life. The motor is bad, the handle release broke, the housing is falling apart, etc. I would've loved to have it but it just wasn't really worth getting. Plus you can get one of those Lindhaus Activas brand new for around $500 which would've cost just as much as fixing the other one up. The $800 one you must be referring to would be the Diamante which I already have one of those. But you are correct though that they are completely Italian made. Lindhaus is one of if not my top most recommended brand to anybody looking for a new vacuum cleaner. I mean they are just that good of vacuum cleaners in my humble opinion.

Yesterday I went to an estate sale and there was a Kirby Sentria with attachments.

Today I went to an estate sale and there was an older white Craftsman wet/dry vac, I'd guess it was early 80s. Along with a cream and brown Kenmore Powerspray carpet cleaner that also looked early 80s.

That gray Craftsman vacuum looks just like the one that's been in my local thrift store for a long time.

I prefer the earlier version that was black, as it had the 2 1/2" diameter hose, two speed motor as well as wheels.

That Riccar...or two Riccars? would be ones I would go back for. Although Panasonic made models and just Riccar by name, very smooth vacuums. The Craftsman would be a 50/50 toss-up. It's kind of funky and would make a good utilitarian vacuum to use around the house outside of the collection aspect. The way it's built makes me think it was intended to be connected to Craftsman's line of power tools that utilize a vacuum port and be used in combination with the tool.

These were at the thrift shop this week. The Shark at the left was weird and I didn’t even notice the Shark name on it until I looked at the picture.

I really liked the Hoover on the right - it was one of those later Elite based Softguard models, had the three beige tools behind the top cover and even had a new Genuine Hoover HEPA bag in it.

I didn't get it for one of if not all four reasons. A, I don't have a whole lot of space for it (At least at the moment). B, I wasn't too happy with the condition that it was in. C, it wasn't worth for what was in my budget range. And/or D, I just wasn't really interested in it (At least at the moment). Overall, I'm very careful with what I find. I don't want to purchase something that I would later regret getting. Especially if I tried to sell it.

I hope you got that Infinity! I forget the exact specifics of it but I believe these were Euro-Pro's first attempt at a Dyson competitor. It was when they were still calling themselves Euro-Pro and they just had the hand vac called "The Shark". Eventually the model name succeeded the brand name and then then called themselves Shark.

In any case those vacuums are rare. It's been several years since one surfaced on eBay and I didn't buy it because the price was outlandish (three figures).

Didn't know they were rare, but I did think it was strange. I will check next time I go down there.

Today I stopped into Salvation Army thrift store. I had not been there in over two years, because it had gotten to where there was hardly anything ever there, and in vaccums would never see much. So I had given up on it.

Today I went in and oh boy it was packed. There were three aisles just of small appliances. Then I walked in the back corner and saw some vacuums.

Well I just about fainted. There was a Hoover Self Propelled Windtunnel, the exact blue model that I had been looking for!! I can't believe my luck lately on finding vacuums and fans but there it was. Looked like a few tools were missing but the price at $10 was a steal.

There was also a Eureka Smart Vac, a Kirby Sentria and a Bissell Powerforce Compact. There were some others but I can't recall what. So I keep looking and I see the attachments for the Sentria, and next to them is this big cardboard box. I look inside and find the wands, turbo tool, owner's manual and extra bags and filters for the Windtunnel! What a deal.

Of course I did buy it. I can't believe I finally found one and so complete at that for $10.

The Oreck Magnesium is supposed to be good. That other Oreck with the weird graphics is kind of funky, never seen that one before. Most of the other stuff is not too important.

If you think you could make solid money on refurbishing SteamVacs that would be a good racket to tap into lol I have never seen that many at once

I’d forgotten about this thread but I did go to a thrift store this morning and saw these. That Quauntum X has been there since at least the summer, and at $99.

That Hoover Windtunnel I found interesting, as that color (Garnet Metal I believe) is quite uncommon compared to the typical blue or silver ones. It also does not have a Dirt Sensor which was quite unusual on the later Self Propelled models from what I’ve seen. I only recall seeing one other in that color.

I also stopped at a yard sale that had a Kirby G4, a Tristar black canister with all the attachments for $10 and an upright Hoover carpet cleaner. I saw a couple buy the Tristar.

Then I went to an estate sale and saw a silver Kenmore Elite Crossover Canister, for $60.

Oh that hose!

Is ridiculously stumpy for a full sized canister. I don't know what Hoover was thinking but they missed the mark by a couple feet 😂

Had one of them models, and I don't know if the hose was shortened or what but it was about 4 feet long end to end. I battled with that and the power head for days and ended up smashing it on the concrete 🫢 it seems like the D1000 that was one step above this one had a longer and better hose....
